Party 500K Flopped Bottom Set, How Can I Play This Better?
Right after the first break, Hero is down to 3800 chips, blinds 100/200.
Hero limps in EP with 3/3. Bunch of limpers, SB folds and BB raps, pot is 1100, Hero has 3600 behind. Flop is 3/5/8 rainbow. Checked to Hero by the BB. I want action, this rainbow flop is good for me, someone might develop a draw on the turn, but I figure to have the best hand and hope it will stay that way. I don't want to squander this set though, so I'm hoping for some action. With 1100 in the pot, I lead out for 700, leaving myself 2900 behind. MP limper calls as does the BB. Pot is now 3,200. Turn is a 2 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], which presents a potential flush draw to spades now. BB fires out 700 chips into the 3200 pot? Now I'm worried that he might have the magical 4/6 or A/4 and I've just been outdrawn, pretty much the worst card that could've hit for me on that flop (well, one of them anyway). I decide to just smooth-call with position, the MP limper gets out. Pot is now 4,600. River is an offsuit Queen, I have 2200 chips left and the BB fires out 1500 chips. I call and he has the 4/6 and I'm down to 700 left. Should I have bet more on the flop? Should I have considered folding on the turn? This was my first time playing the 500K, so I'm used to players overvaluing single pair hands or gutshot straight draws. I had no reads on this player yet, was fairly new to the table. |

yeah you should have folded the turn with a set on a 2358 board getting 4.5:1
raise the turn, push the river, you SHOULD go bust on this hand. |

Actually my line with 33 in EP is a probable fold pf... but i think you played it goot...
its not a particularly coordinated flop... I probably would have potted the flop with bottom set in a multiway pot... but I think your 3/4 bet is solid here... FWIW... I think SB fires out with maybe some weird two pair on the turn...figuring you for a small overpair to the board...... and I prolly just go AI right there even though we now know you're a big dog... |

No way you should consider folding the turn. You are just destined to go broke here.

Why are there so many bad beat posts on the forum recently? Push the turn. The flop is fine. Preflop is fine at a loose-passive table, I'd fold normally.

You can't play results based poker.

With an M of 12, fold 33 in EP. Other than that you played it fine.

Re: Party 500K Flopped Bottom Set, How Can I Play This Better?
Thanks to everyone who replied. Usually with my stack I would have folded the pocket 3's in EP as well and waited for a better hand. But it was a fairly passive table pre-flop, so I figured I'd take a shot.
On the flop I was trying to figure out how to get maximum value from my set, rather than just take down the 1100 chips that were out there. On the turn, the big blinds bet confused me. With a potential flush draw hitting, I wasn't sure if his bet was an attempt at getting a cheap river card to hit the flush, or if he was already holding the straight or had just hit two pair. I figured I was way ahead or way behind, so I opted to just call, figuring if the board pairs on the river, I'll be in good shape, and if it doesn't, I may still have the best hand. That guy value-bet the [censored] out of me. I was just looking to see if anyone would play each street differently. I probably should've just folded pre-flop. And with so many limpers pre-flop, I should've bet pot on the flop. Then again, I want him chasing that straight draw. I'm about a 3:1 favorite on the flop against his holding. With 1100 in the pot, I bet 700, so he has to call 700 to win 1800, slightly less than the 3:1 odds he needs. Unfortunately, the MP player also called the 700, so he then has to call 700 to win 2,500, which is better than 3:1 Now, if I had bet 1100 and the MP player called, the BB would have to call 1100 to win 3300, which is exactly the odds on making his hand. But, I can't know my opponents holdings or how many players will come along for the ride. Alright, so I'm guessing my best options are: 1. Fold pre-flop 2. Bet pot on the flop His river bet just looked like a value bet, but I don't see how I could fold there. I didn't push the turn because I figured I'd get more money out of my opponent on the river, and if I do push the turn, I'm getting called by: 1. two pair 2. pair + flush draw 3. 4/6 4. A/4 I believe most everything else is folding to my push on the turn. I don't want to push out the hands that I have crushed, and I don't want to pay off the hands that have me crushed. |
