Who else is scared of airplanes?

I use to fly alot as a kid, and I never minded planes all that much. It seems lately after watching LOST that I've aquired a fear of flying.

It's just scary knowing that if something did indeed go wrong, theres almost a 0% chance of surviving the actual crash. Yes I know planes are very safe, it's just I don't see how they are that safe. Damnit it's 500 tons of metal 30,000 feet up in the sky!

That combined with the annoyance of sitting in airports for 2+ hours prior to check-in, then having painstaking ear-aches... I'd just rather take a boat or drive.

Anyone know of any way to get over my LOST inspired manic regression aerophobia?

We had two recent threads on this here and here.

And to answer your question, for the short term maybe have your Dr. give you some meds or have a drink or 3 before you get on.

If your already cautious, let me help you become terrified.
In engineering class, our professor was discussing safety factors, and used bridges, and airplanes as examples.

A safety factor of 10 means if you say a bridge can hold 10lb it has to actually be able to hold 100.

Airplanes have a safety factor of f*cking 1.17!!!!

I know someone who's survived 2 major air crashes. Most of the other people didnt.

He was running bad.

Yeah, so does he think of himself as extremely lucky? Or the unluckiest son of a bitch on the face of the Earth? Could go either way really.

Does he still fly?

Re: Who else is scared of airplanes?

I believe he does, yes. Though he's only started again within the last few years, i think he had a long gap of refusing to fly anywhere, and i think that's understandable.

If i were him id see it as quite unlucky. Plane crashes probably dont do your general metal state any good. He found it quite traumatic I think.

Plus the chances of being in a plane crash are probably more remote, than those of surviving a plane crash, which would tend to indicate he's unlucky.

Re: Who else is scared of airplanes?

Be sure to let us know whenever he's flying in the future so we can avoid that plane. Or, with the law of averages, should we assume his plane can never crash again?

I know, I know, just because it came up black 15 times in a row doesn't mean red is bound to hit next.

By any chance, has he been seen hanging around with this guy?

I must say that I really hate the "planes are statistically safer than cars" line. With a car, you generally have more control over the outcome, which puts me at ease a little, and you have a chance of having a crash where you don't die, which is very improbable in a plane. Plus, plane engines make crazy noises, and it leaves me to analyze whether they're normal or bad news.

Beat me to it....

If you're scared of planes, dont go driving your car either. Cars are much more dangerous than planes. All that extra metal in the plane is overkill, the car will kill you just as easily.

Airplanes are very safe and I've flown dozens and dozens of times. No need to be scared.

How many people do you know who died in a plane crash?

Re: Who else is scared of airplanes?

I personally am not ashamed to say that I *hate* flying. I swear, if I could legally be tranquilized and wheeled on and off the plane, I'd go for it.

I hate everything about it. I hate showing up to the airport hours early so that I can shuffle in lines like cattle in a chute, take off my shoes and be frisked by some retard that couldn't get a real job, have my [censored] gone through, stuffed like sardines into a shiny tube made of tin foil and hurtled at hundreds of miles per hour miles in the sky only to be shaken like a can of paint in a mixer.

Hate, hate, hate.

But other than that I'm fine with it.

Re: Who else is scared of airplanes?

I don't know how helpful this is since I don't have a fear of flying but there are two things I can think of which should be helpful.

1) If you're out driving (or someone else is driving with you in the car) you can affect the outcome so this could be scary. In a plane you can't do anything about what happens so there is nothing to be scared of doing.

And (this is the best thing about flying compared to driving)

2) If you crash, you die. You will probably not feel anything except for the adrenaline rush of your life. Compare this to the risk of becoming a vegetable from a car crash, which I find REALLY scary.

Conclusion - flying is the sht.

As a sideeffect, if you survive a plane crash you have a problem. Nothing will probably get you excited for at least a few years since it just doesn't compare to falling 10 000 meters, hitting the ground and walking away..

You know why the statistician brought a bomb on a plane, right?

Airplanes are scary. They're huge pieces of metal that don't seem like they should be able to stay in the air. And turbulence makes them bump and tilt like they're being blown around in the wind.

Reason has nothing to do with it.

Re: Who else is scared of airplanes?

I strongly dislike flying.
I accept it as best I can and try not to wimper.
Every noise and bank makes me sick.
Though I understand the odds, I still hate it.
I have had 2 extremely vivid plane crash dreams. One was actually a helicopter.
Despite all this, I will never click past a plane crash show I stumble upon.

I once read that asking someone if they know anyone who has died in a plane crash helps them see how rare it is.
I knew someone who has died in a plane crash.

I strongly dislike flying.
