tell me what you think of splitting \'a&e\' into a separate forum
movies, tv, music, books, that sort of thing.
the pro-splitters believe lots of people would love to discuss the subjects but won't do so in oot. it's not because of ooters saying, "man i just can't go 30 seconds without seeing another tv show discussed!" traffic-wise oot is the biggest forum on 2+2 by a mile. as far as it giving "oot haters" more ammo, i will stick up for it personally. several mods have started talking about the idea so i wanted to solicit your input. |
Re: tell me what you think of splitting \'a&e\' into a separate forum
I think it is a bad idea; further dividing OOT will only give the OOT-haters more to bitch about. Plus, it's not as if those things are overwhelming or anything.
|
Re: tell me what you think of splitting \'a&e\' into a separate forum
no. oot is already split enough.
|
Re: tell me what you think of splitting \'a&e\' into a separate forum
arts & entertainment?
great idea. now, tell me. how do you feel about frilly toothpicks? edit: can someone provide some solid examples of OOT being badly split already? cuz im confused. |
Re: tell me what you think of splitting \'a&e\' into a separate forum
I'll add another no: too much splitting of OOT already.

Re: tell me what you think of splitting \'a&e\' into a separate forum
Getting rid of the arts and entertainment stuff seems like it's going to leave only stupid sex questions, the occasional restaurant reports, and the occasionally inspired "What color is a tennis ball?" type stuff. I think you lose too much signal this way.

td,
i dont think thats a bad split at all, and i was hoping there was a better response than that. i like sports being in its own little hole. that being said, i didnt experience the oot/sports split, so i dont know what that sort of split does to a forum. yasher |
Re: tell me what you think of splitting \'a&e\' into a separate forum
I'm against anything you think is a good idea.

I wouldn't come to OOT if all there was were polls on how I wipe or posts on whether or not some 20 yr. old Gomer should kiss a girl.

[/ QUOTE ] i kinda want this explained. there are mods who think people are scared to broach subjects about arts & entertainment in OOT? im confused. if we remove the a&e posts, do we still have a forum that smart, mature people want to frequent? id like to see a bit more discourse about this, cuz i dont have the first clue how it would change the forum. yasher |
Re: tell me what you think of splitting \'a&e\' into a separate forum
Sports is a good example to me of why a split is good, IMHO. I'd have probably given up OOT long ago if there was a signifincant component of Sports stuff...
I just want to make a few more points about the argument for a split of 'Entertainment and Arts' It is pretty disheartening to spend time and effort writing a review, and see it buried under the one-line wonders that fill up the front page very quickly (I'm not moaning about the one-line wonders - that's exactly what OOT is about, and is a major part of its charm). BUT, you just know that people who might have been interested, and contributed to discussion, just never see them. I bet a ton of people who don't bother now would have a lot to say in an E&A forum. And people who would be interested in E&A just wouldn't hang around OOT for just the entertainment stuff. We've had some good band and film reviews get buried like this, over and over. I personally got fed up with writing them, just to see them disappear, and do them much less frequently than I used to (I think I did something like 1 a day in January - I think I did 2 in total in March), and I've seen people start reviewing, apparently see their efforts get ploughed under, and pretty much give up. I think the only Ents stuff we have going regularly now are Pryor15's reviews, and the OOT Book Club and Film Club. I think it could be way more useful to have this stuff in a separate forum, to encourage reviews, discussions, plot points, Vegas shows (??), specific gigs etc, to better service the less frequent strat visitors to the 'other topics' area, and to better value the posters who take time and effort to give their insights. Finally, film reviews have drawn a lot of flak from some posters in the past for just being in OOT (it's usually the first reason given when whining about how lame OOT has become), so not only has there been a push to create a separate forum in terms of people wanting it, there's been a push with posters in OOT not wanting it in OOT (subtle difference, but there is one). so not only do Filmies contend with fast disappearance of their stuff, they also face some hostility for their efforts. Finally, this hase been proposed by a variety of users many times in the past. To put it more poetically, entertainment is being overshadowed by the rest of OOT, give it some space and light, and it'll blossom into something really good. |

And it would be difficult for me to care less if there are people that want to discuss movies, etc. but are too sensitive to come into OOT to do it. |

I'm against anything you think is a good idea. [/ QUOTE ] ok i think having 100 million dollars is a good idea. your response is moronic, and it honestly sets back the possibility of other mods taking oot user input seriously. several of them would rather just make decisions because they think it's just a circus in here. |
Re: tell me what you think of splitting \'a&e\' into a separate forum
Couldn't be the asinine "*" system, could it?

Re: tell me what you think of splitting \'a&e\' into a separate forum

Couldn't be the asinine "*" system, could it? [/ QUOTE ] no, that's really well-supported. it's the trainwrecks, poop threads, etc. and people who value their own input so little that when given the opportunity to speak up, they say crap like, "i will support anything ronald mcdonald does" or "i won't support anything astroglide does." my support isn't even implied here. the reason i asked is because i thought oot itself should have input. |
Re: tell me what you think of splitting \'a&e\' into a separate forum
So what's left...trainwrecks and porn?

Your original post was essentially, "astro, you suck." It is difficult to phrase your disagreement more provocatively. |
Re: tell me what you think of splitting \'a&e\' into a separate forum
I was politely saying I don't respect you as a moderator, without resorting to name-calling. I know that your, and most people's, ability to read between the lines is limited, however. Please don't respond, I won't be reading. /[communication].

sports [/ QUOTE ] i think sports and politics were absolutely necessary splits. i don't think this one is absolutely necessary, but i can see that there are more people than i realized that are simply unwilling to set foot in oot. |
Re: tell me what you think of splitting \'a&e\' into a separate forum
Is OOT really that scary that there are MODS afraid to come in here? I think the problem might be with those mods and not with OOT. Mods should be thick skinned enough to take whatever is thrown at them (to a reasonable extent)

Re: tell me what you think of splitting \'a&e\' into a separate forum
it wasn't polite, and it was moronic. i didn't fail to read between the lines, you deserved a response to let you know how stupid it is to not only burn but actually set back an opportunity to have your voice heard.
other mods could just look at this thread and say, "see? they don't even give a [censored]. let's just do what we think is best for them." |

Re: tell me what you think of splitting \'a&e\' into a separate forum

Is OOT really that scary that there are MODS afraid to come in here? [/ QUOTE ] in a word, yes. i don't really blame them either. i suspect that if they feel this way, there are lots of other people on 2+2 that do too. if splitting would suddenly cause all of those people to generate more traffic, that would be in 2+2's best interest. but right now oot is in 2+2's best interest. oot has real numbers, a&e has speculative ones. so the question is to what degree a split could hurt oot. i'm surprised that so many oot regulars think a&e is all we've got though. really, look at the thread list. |

The A&E type ones are some of the ones that I do look at more reliably as they tend to have better quality content, on average. |
Re: tell me what you think of splitting \'a&e\' into a separate forum
Astro,
I don't think there needs to be a split. I think the mods should go ahead and try and bring these topics up in OOT. They might be suprized at how well it might go over. |

Then where does OOT stand? |
