My little brother always poops his pants.
 

He is 8. He always used to hold his poops for a couple days, and would let out a huge log when he finally did go. We're talking multiple flushes just to break the log in half type of poops.

For maybe the past 4 months, he's always been pooping his pants, whether it be while awake or sleeping. He says he "can't feel it" when he has to poop or not, and it just comes out. I understand if it only happens at night, and just too lazy to get up out of bed and whatnot. He never used to have this pooping problem, until like I said about 4 months ago. WTF is wrong with him?

He needs to face some kind of punishment/humiliation when he poops his pants. If you cut off his nightly ice cream every time he poops his pants i bet he'll magically start feeling it when he needs to take a dump. If dogs can be trained to not poop spontaneously there is no reason a non-retarded 8 year old human cant.

i dont think anyone needs to face degradation or humiliation for pooping their patns and I wouldn't want to humiliate my brother if he were in OP's situation. In fact its kind of cool that he just poops his pants. Its def true that doing something like taking away his nightly ice cream might help but I think the idea of consulting a psychologist or something might be a good idea just to see if this happens in other kids his age.

If you do stuff like this with pissing you will have problems with your bladder that make it difficult to tell when you need to pee and to have difficulty controlling it. I wouldn't be at all surpirsed if he has caused himself some problems with his old habit. Find a specialist.

I'm sure it generally doesn't.

I'd see a professional about this. It's not remotely normal. I would be surprised if it was physical, considering he has past problems with his pooping that are the exact opposite of what he's doing now. Not that I'm a doctor, just saying ....

I also find it hard to believe a well-adjusted kid wouldn't be screaming to go to the doctor for a problem like this, so it sounds like he needs some sort of counseling or something. I think leaving a kid in a state like this for four months is probably not very healthy for him at all. He needs some professional intervention. Your folks might, too, to learn how to handle this and see if there's anything they can do to make things better.

Kids with chronic constipation problems-which it sounds like is the case as he would hold and then have large bms-will stretch out their rectum and sigmoid colon. If there is retention of stool,the rectum enlarges and loses its propulsive ablility and sensation to "go" will also decrease.
Also there is stretching the rectum/colon it takes time for it to shrink down to normal and therefore work effectively.
His may never be returning to normal non distended size.
This can be very painful, further causing kids to hold.

If he has an obstruction, stool can leak out around the obstruction.

I went through some of this with my, then 5-6 year old. It took a year to get through-

See a doctor, get referrals to GI docs, or maybe a pediatric behavioralist(once the physical has been ruled out).

Children often react with regressive behavior when there is some new stressor in their life. Perhaps something is going on a school or in his peer group that is causing a problem. I would say that (a) a physical exam is called for to see if there are problems in his digestive tract and (b) some kind of counseling should determine if there is some sort of added stress in his life. This behavior should not be ignored, but the child should not be shamed about it.

I did this to a certain extent when I was about this kids age... minus the crapping my pants part...

I didnt like the feeling of pooping so I would wait like 2-3 days and then just crap my brains out and get it all done with at once...
