PC Video Game Help

Hi - need some help - I am looking for a PC video game that would be suitable for a 8 year old girl (and not Barbie or anything like that, they make those games too easy) - ideally a non violent action/adventure type game would be great (not too violent, and not too easy) - any suggestions?

Thanks - af

She loves video games, but she lives in Sweden and does not really know what games there are (she is my daughter - we have played Shrek and Shrek 2 - both were perfect but I am out of ideas as I do not really play video games) - and it is OK if it is a little violent (just not over the top)......

eh, I guess you could keep with the movie theme, games like spiderman and all those other ones. I doubt they are any good, but I honestly wouldnt know.

If she really loves video games, you could also try setting her up with some old school stuff. Like some of the old nintendo games, like super mario bros and stuff. You can get an emulator and play any of that stuff on a PC

Thats a pretty good idea (Super Mario type games) - do they sell that for PC's? I never thought they would - af

I know this isn't what you asked, but you should seriously consider getting a PS2, an eye-toy, and a dance-mat and game for the PS2. The kids absolutely love these.

Ice Age 2: The Meltdown

My roommate got the demo for this game as sortof a joke sometime last week, but the game is actually pretty good. It's simple, fun, for kids, obviously, and also happens to be rather pretty. I think it's exactly what you're looking for.

I have been avoiding this as I do not want her playing too many video games - I fear having a system like that will cause her to spend too much time in front of the TV (as opposed to doing more active things) - I see her every 2 months (in Sweden) and we play on my computer at night before she goes to bed, she really does not play video games when I am not there (she is after all an 8 year old girl)

There is some website that for like $15 a month or something you get access to all those old games (downloaded straght from the intenet) cant remember it tho. You can also google "emulator" and find them for free (tho illegally)

Re: PC Video Game Help

Action/adventure games for the PC have been very mature for some time. Honestly I'm having trouble thinking of anything in that genre that isn't.

Most of the nonviolent action/adventure sorts of games are produced for the consoles these days.

However, there are a few good PC games, some real classics, that may be worthwhile. The Myst games have some merit. Personally I loved the old King's Quest games when I was young. Puzzle games and strategy games are often appropriate, Lemmings maybe. The Sims, Civilization, Pirates!, etc. Some RPGs, Neverwinter Nights or Baldur's Gate or maybE Knights of the Old Republic. Starcraft and Warcraft. The Monkey Island games. Prince of Persia. Grim Fandango. Age of Empires, Heroes of Might and Magic.

I can't think of anything that quite meets your criteria. Honestly if she's into action/adventure you might get her a console. Some of them are going relatively cheap now. No recent action game for the PC that I can think of is remotely appropriate for an 8-year-old girl.

CIV 4 lol, did you miss where he said she's eight?

You might want to go for a game based on an animated movie, as was suggested above. Or one of the 2D Worms games, though they are a bit old now. Maybe one of the Monkey Island games, though the humour would go over her head and you'd probably have to play it with her to solve the puzzles.

She's 8, and if she plays PC games she's probably well ahead of the curve. She doesn't need watered down [censored]. A smart 8-year-old can definitely learn Civ4.

how hard is it - - is there lots of reading involved? (I am serious I have no idea)

madnak 03-30-2006 07:40 PM

Re: PC Video Game Help

Well, it's rather dry. There's a fair amount of reading, not "too" much, and a lot of math. But I think the biggest barrier would be that it's very dry, all about systems and managing systems.

Re: PC Video Game Help

Maybe a little young for that - she likes games where you have to jump and fight (but I do not want her to be playing games with lifelike violence - cartoon characters fighting is OK - blood, not so much)

that monkey island game looks pretty good - downlaoded the demo and seems right up her alley - thanks for the help

You can try Kingdom Hearts. I saw a commercial for it yesterday, it looks pretty tame. Especially when Mickey Mouse and the gang are in it. I dunno what the game play is like, though.

Re: PC Video Game Help

PC is pretty slim pickings for this kind of game.

I just looked at the top 50 PC action games on gamerankings.com, and literally all of them are inappropriate for children. I looked under rated "E," and they all seem to be pretty mediocre.

Some games you might want to consider: LEGO: Alpha Team, Lego Star Wars, Rayman 2, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

I haven't played any of these, though I've heard very good things about Lego Star Wars if she's into that. Good luck!

Re: PC Video Game Help

Monkey Island is absolutely great, I've only played the old ones but if the new ones are of similar quality they should be a sure bet. Just not a lot of jumping around and action play in them.

Re: PC Video Game Help

Kingdom Hearts, like most kid's games these days, is console only.

lucasarts classics

All of these games are excellent, especially Loom and The Secret of Monkey island. Fun puzzle games that are definitely not too easy.
