Cardplayer the circuit - Gavin Smith vs. Mike The Mouth
Seems to me that there is a sort of rivalry of who will be the main co-host of the circuit.
I enjoy listenning to Mike the Mouth, he seems really honest when he gives poker advice and seem to have a good heart and is genuinely friendly. On the negative side, he's not consistent, he frequently doesn't show up to the show because of all night card sessions or just disappeared with Scott Huff thinly disguising his frustration. On the other hand there's Gavin Smith, who has just come from a big run at a recent WPT event win, he's consistent and always shows up on time. On the negative side, he doesn't seem to speak up that much unless asked a direct question (open up Gavin!). I like him, but seriously Gavin, be more outgoing on air! So who do you think will remain as co-host of the circuit, the entertaining (sometimes annoying when steaming) Mike the Mouth, or the more shy but consistent and excellent player Gavin Smith? |
Vote for Mike
Mike is so much more entertaining. Who can forget the times when he dropped a few f-bombs when talking with T.J. and Tom McEvoy. And the time Huff was disgusted with Mike's eating on-air. It does suck that Mike seems to be unreliable, but he just wouldn't be Mike if he was always on time.
Is Sebok in the running too? |
Re: Vote for Mike
It seems like it judging from the recent Sebok exposure that the circuit has been receiving. He seems like a genuine type of guy and entertaining. But to be honest, he should at least get a bracelet or a WPT win under his shoulders first. Mike the Mouth is famous for his great WSOP main event runs, and Smith at least won a recent WPT event.
Having said that, I wouldn't mind hearing more of Sebok in the future. |
Re: Cardplayer the circuit - Gavin Smith vs. Mike The Mouth
I like it better when Mike hosts because he says what needs to be said, even if we don't like to hear it.

Is he automatically 10x a better player if he wins one? And you know how easy it is since the best pros win at least one if not two every year--oh wait no they don't. |
Re: Cardplayer the circuit - Gavin Smith vs. Mike The Mouth
I thought the latest edition of the Circuit was real good. Sebok/Huff/Smith seem to have some good chemistry.

Re: Cardplayer the circuit - Gavin Smith vs. Mike The Mouth
They'll take Matusow, whenever Matusow is available. Matusow is the only reason people started listening to this thing. Matusow is the star, and he makes the show interesting. I think Smith is good, and he talks about poker from the vantage point of his recent sucesses. Huff, Matusow, and Smith together may be the best combo.
All I know is that Sebok sucks. He ruins everything. He laughs like a girl, he's only played for 1.5 years, and he brings out the worst in Huff and Smith. It's all frat-boy time when these 3 get together. (socially frat, not real-college frat) Sebok doesn't sound confident when he talks about poker. He sounds like he is repeating things that people have told him. OK, he made 2 final tables at minor WSOP events. But would anybody know his name if he wasn't Barry Greenstein's adopted son? |
Re: Cardplayer the circuit - Gavin Smith vs. Mike The Mouth
I'll take the contrarian viewpoint. I prefer Gavin Smith over Matusow. Matusow is definitely entertaining, but it seems to me whenever they are interviewing someone, Mike tends to interject, sometimes interrupt, with the answer of how HE would do something or some story about HIM. So sometimes where you'd like to hear the answer from the guest, it is sometimes shortened by Matusow's comments. Not that I don't want to hear Matusow's comments, but it just seems like the guest often has more to say on a particular point but is cutoff. Gavin does a better job of just sitting back and listening to what the guest has to say and interjecting a small comment or question where needed.
Basically if you could have The Mouth there for some preliminary commentary and questions and then get him out of the room for the interviews with the guests it would be much nicer. Personal preference. Eric |

The person who consistantly shows up and meets their obligations, that's who will keep their gig.

Re: Cardplayer the circuit - Gavin Smith vs. Mike The Mouth
You know what. I've changed my mind on Sebok, I found the latest Hoyt Corkin's episode quite entertaining. The trio really works out for Gavin, he seems to be more comfortable, pressure is off of him and he has talked more about poker in the last 2 episodes than he has in the last 10.

Re: Cardplayer the circuit - Gavin Smith vs. Mike The Mouth
Some breaking news:
On tonight's episode of "The Circuit", Scott Huff remarked that Smith and Sebok would be made "official co-hosts forevermore" and that Matusow would probably be demoted to shorter segments on the side, if that. I think it's a good thing. Originally I got a kick out of the Mouth – partly due to some spilled-over sympathy about how he went down in the '05 WSOP – but the way he sidelines guest after guest after guest with the same tiresome, miserable garbage about his life makes me want to, um, kick him in the mouth. He's also been reluctant to show up regularly, so it's probably the best for all concerned to bring some fresh troops in. It sounds to me like Huff, Smith and Sebok are definitely starting to gel, and I'm glad this arrangement has been made semi-official. |
Re: Cardplayer the circuit - Gavin Smith vs. Mike The Mouth
I find Sebok and Huff very entertaining, and I don't find Gavin as entertaining, but I think he gives the most solid advice/analysis... so it's a good chemistry.
I enjoyed Matusow the first few times, but now he was just getting completely tired and annoying. I started groaning every time I saw he was doing the next one, and excited to hear the current duo. |
Re: Cardplayer the circuit - Gavin Smith vs. Mike The Mouth
Gavin is way better....
when Mike is there, I can't hear anything, except bitching |

Re: Cardplayer the circuit - Gavin Smith vs. Mike The Mouth
I like listening to Mike, like that time he was talking about how Antonius was such a donkey.
But then there was this thing where this 2-5 NL (I think) live player asked for advice on what level to play (based on his bankroll), and Matusow said something ridiculous like he should play 10-20 with $4k roll or something along those lines. |
Re: Cardplayer the circuit - Gavin Smith vs. Mike The Mouth
Matusow is a clown. A pathetic clown at that who whines about everything and everyone because of his insecurities. I can't say I really want to listen to that on a regular basis. Smith is OK but kind of a whiner himself. But he is not as bad as Mike and gives props where they are due. Between these two it is definitely Gavin as the preferred choice.

Re: Cardplayer the circuit - Gavin Smith vs. Mike The Mouth
mike and some guests are the only good things about that show
|
Re: Cardplayer the circuit - Gavin Smith vs. Mike The Mouth
gavin is very "regular" and sometimes boring. I don't think he adds that much to the show. Sebok is more entertaining...but honestly the Mouth was the most entertaining piece to the show. What do you guys think about their advice? Sometimes I roll my eyes over how terrible some of the stuff they say..and this coming from a massive donk.

Re: Cardplayer the circuit - Gavin Smith vs. Mike The Mouth
I prefer Smith > Matusow, but the show is really better with both Smith and Sebok.

[/ QUOTE ] I agree with this. Gavin Smith may well be a better player and even a better human-being than Mike Matusow, but that isn't the point. The show is about entertainment. Does anybody seriously think their game will benefit from listening to any of the hosts? Hopefully Gavin will become better with practice, but Matusow was a natural. |
Re: Cardplayer the circuit - Gavin Smith vs. Mike The Mouth
Yeah, and btw, the interviews with Hassan Habib and Fast Freddy has been one of the most enjoyable of the circuit show for me.
Mike seems like a cool guy but he keeps on ranting about his bad beats and how he is the unluckiest player in poker, blah blah blah blah. And he doesn't show up regularly due to his tilting/cash game play. I think it's for the best. |
Re: Cardplayer the circuit - Gavin Smith vs. Mike The Mouth
I am sure Motor mouth mike has no conception of a bankroll.
Here is a guy who has gone bust so many times he probably can't count them. He does talk a good game he almost convinced me he is the best NLHE player in the world. NOT. Gotta love the Aruba final table. Vindication my azz, LOL what a mutt. |
Re: Cardplayer the circuit - Gavin Smith vs. Mike The Mouth
Yeah, Mike just complains about stuff, and disses everyone except himself. Gavin's a bit boring, but sometimes says intersting stuff.
Scott Huff and Joe Sebok are entertaining. And they always have good guests. |
