Deep movies that seem shallow on the surface.

Napoleon Dynamite is an example of a movie that seems shallow on the surface. But once you've seen it a few times you begin to realize that it really is a deeply intellectual movie. What other movies are like this? What other movies seem "dumb" at first glance but are really deep, artistic, and philosophical in reality?

Man, I've seen like 3 or parts of ND on HBO including the beginning, and I can't stay awake for any more.

Office Space, I think it says alot about humanity and our place in modern society, etc.

Even though it might not even mean to.

I think Shakes the Clown is a deep existential film. The whole clowns vs. mimes thing is about being "thrown" in the world and authentic and inauthentic ways of responding to that.

My friends have thought I was nuts the couple of times that I've talked about this. No, I don't think this about many movies at all. I'm convinced it's true about this one, though.

All of Steven Seagal's films. Environmental issues, corruption, greed, and stonefaced badassness. How much deeper can it be?

Seriously though, Bubba Ho-Tep is a marvelous little indy-film starring Bruce Campbell from Evil Dead-fame with an incredibly silly premise which turns out to be a touching tale about friendship, institutional life, and sacrifice (among other things). Plot outline from IMDb: Elvis and JFK, both alive and in nursing homes, fight for the souls of their fellow residents as they battle an ancient Egyptian Mummy..

I don't think Cool Hand Luke seems particularly shallow, but I don't think it's usually given anywhere near the credit it deserves for its intelligence or even its subversiveness.

Napolean Dynamite struck me as a movie that had "deeply intellectual" pretensions but that was, once you thought about it, quite stupid. Sort of like "Saving Private Ryan."

It's no where near the worst movie of all time. You might not like it, but I'm sure together we could list at least 50 movies that are much worse.

Well, Saving Private Ryan is good for about an hour and a half, and then it becomes a terrible parody of actual war.

Speilberg has a problem with final acts. He's so good, and then he just kinda fumbles as he crosses the finish line. There are about 4 exceptions.

edu-ma-cate me. what deep message do you get from the movie?

my friend's dvd player stopped working 1/2 through the movie and ive never had the motivation to watch the rest of the movie. had the player kept working i would have finished watching it, but the movie was barely entertaining.

did holden caufield show up in the last 20 minutes?
