Yellowstone or Glacier National Park?

My brother lives in Montana and I am going out to see him in July or August. We have a choice of going to Yellowstone or Glacier for a few days. I've heard Glacier has better scenery, but Yellowstone has a lot more geological features. Has anyone been to either? How was it?

Yellowstone. It will make you realize how insignificent you really are.

I was in Glacier as a child and it was cool.

But the last four years we've been going to Yellowstone and a bit to the Grand Tetons. It is a fantastic experience.

My sister and her family live in Bozeman and we go see them over the 4th of july and either prior to that or after that spend time at Yellowstone. We've never stayed in the park and want to do that sometime. We have stayed in all three major entrances and also in the south.

On the south: Check out Flagg Ranch. They're on the net and have both campground and beautiful cabins.

On the East: Check out Pahaska Teepee. Also on the net. Right at the entrance. And there is also Cody WY, but that is about an hour outside the park.

On the West: Well we did a Best Western or something, the West entrance is the least impressive base camp unless you are going backcountry camping.

On the north: Don't stay in the Motel 6 in Gardiner, there are other places there that looked ok though. We were only there for 8 hours but it wasn't a nice place to stay. Beautiful town with Elk wandering around through town and plenty to do once in the park.

If you come in the North Entrance a great place to stay along the way but before you get to Gardiner is a place called Chico Hot Springs. It's a little resort in the hills and a great party in the bar every night we have ever been there.

If coming in through the west entrance you can't go wrong in Big Sky as you go through the Gallitin Range but before you get into West Yellowstone town.

Good luck.

Oh, btw, this summer we're probably going to Glacier for a change.

My trip to yellowstone was very memorable. I enjoyed myself, despite being a 15 year old boy stuck with his family in a car for a week

I grew up near Glacier Park and I've spent time in both Yellowstone and Glacier. Hands down, Glacier is place to visit. The park is best experienced outside of your car on a day hike or an overnight trip. The scenery of Glacier Park rivals the Yosemity valley. An awesome day hike is to climb Mt. Siyeh. At the top you can look over the edge of this 4000ft. cliff.

Yellow stone is over due to explode.

Saw it on the TV the otherday. 600,000 thousand year cycle, over 600,000 years since the last one. Not a normaly type of Volcano but a super one that actualy creates a depresion in the ground rather than the traditional cone.

Anyway why risk it.

Didn't you watch that crappy movie on the discovery channel about this. The whole country will devestated when it blows! He might as well go see it before it happens.

Boris - it's Yosemite.
Matt - why can't you go to both? And, I haven't been to either but I'd go to Glacier.

Sweet fishing in Yellowstone if you're into that, and cool swimming in Firehole river below the hot pots. Glacier = better scenery/hiking/solitude

I live in western MT and there is only one place to visit between the two...........

Glacier Park. and it is not even close.

if you have any questions you can pm me, but Boris or Mr. Zee can probably answer them better than I can.

cheers. J.

Matt,
Either way I don't think you can go wrong. I've been to Yellowstone and there is just so much diversity in scenery, landscapes, etc. you will have a blast. I stayed in West Yellowstone and drove into the park each day. It was a great vacation. I hope you have fun. After seeing the above picture, I'm going to Glacier soon. Peace.

if you are going to go in july or august, you will see more cars and people in yellowstone than you will want to. go to glacer and hike, just don't feed the bears

Re: Yellowstone or Glacier National Park?

I lived close to West Yellowstone for a dozen yrs so I may be biased. I like Yellowstone the best, though both are worth the trip. From Yellowstone you can run to Jackson Hole and check out the Tetons. If your a fisherman, the Yellowstone area is great.
Both parks are best seen out of the car.

Re: Yellowstone or Glacier National Park?

They both are fantastic, Yellowstone has a more unique, everything in one park feel, Glacier a more "look how insignificant I am" feel.

One caveat to Glacier, some of the ugliest people in the world live in that region. (No, not Ray Zee)

Ray Zee 03-17-2006 12:11 PM

Re: Yellowstone or Glacier National Park?

its really a simple decision. if you plan on seeing the park driving and looking out the window then yellowstone wins hands down. if you are willing to do a bunch of 5 mile or less hikes glacier will blow you away.
i go there about once a week year round.
i also used to spend 6 weeks a year around yellowstone for almost twenty years.
