What movie scared you the most as a kid?
 

say 10 years old and under. And yes, I know this is gonna be generation-based, but what the hey.

I remember the Witch and the Flying Monkeys from Wizard of Oz scaring the [censored] out of me as a kid when I was watching it on the TV one time.

I now find witches hot, FWIW.

I was 9 or ten. Went to the local library with my cousins and sister. We saw a movie that I think was called '13 Ghosts'. I had nightmares on a regular basis for a while. I don't have a clue what it was about, just that me and all I was with were scared crapless.

Ah yes. I loved that movie. Also had John Candy and Demi Moore. I wasn't a kid though.

Oh, and I actually jumped so hard at the cinema when, in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the childcatcher's face appears large on the screen, that I fell into the row behind.

I now find the queen in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang hot, FWIW.

Wow. Some of you guys watched [censored] up movies as kids. I guess that's what growing up in the video age does. I'm such a late-developer here. Saw my first '15' at 10 ('Rollerball'), and my first '18' at about 13-14 ('the wanderers' I think - or maybe 'Enter the Dragon'). I'm sort of glad I didn't see stuff like 'The Exorcist' at pre-10 though.

House of Dark Shadows. Vampire feature from the House of Dark Shadows t.v. show -- Barnabas Collins the vampire.

Walking through my own house in the dark became an almost sphinctre-exploding experience. Walking to the bathroom in the dark the night after seeing that, two glowing eyes suddenly lit up in front of me and I think I felt like I was dying or something, I was so scared. After being frozen for what seemed like 10 minutes but was probably only 20 seconds, some noises happened that let me know it was my dog, not a vampire come to feast on my blood -- but who knew?

I had this weird fixation on the movie "alien" when I was little. I was really intimidated by my best friend because he could watch it without getting scared and I couldn't even think about it without nearly pissing my pants.

wasn't a movie...was this old East Coast horror series called Chiller Theater...I just remember the title sequence - this really creepy six-fingered hand comes out of the dirt....there was another horor series then but I can't remember the name...

Another one that scared the holy crap out of me when I was about 10 was a TV movie called 'Trilogy of Terror' starring Karen Black - where she gets trapped in an apartment with some African fetish/doll that's come alive.

To this day, I'm a little uneasy around chef's knives. If my big chef knife isn't in it's rack, I start looking around for it.

That one scared me too.

There was one show, part of a short series hosted by Sebastian Cabot, where a hatefu. kid comes back as a demon to kill his mother, who just finds out for sure this stranger she let into her house is her ex-kid/now demon in a shock cut to his demonic face bearing down on her. Wow, that one got me.

And there was a Night Gallery episode that's fantastic, where this guy gives this girl a broach at their date, and on the way back from dinner is a real creep and tries to make out with her and won't stop, so she starts fighting back and all. Finally he says to hell with you, then, b*tch, or something like that, and lets her out at the side of the road with a knowing smirk. As she's walking along the side of the road, the broach, which I think looked like some kind of small animal, comes to evil life and starts biting her and killing her, and she goes down bloody and screaming. Cut to a couple days later, again a pair of hands, like at the beginning of this story, again the same guy's voice, as he pins the same kind of broach on another girl's dress over dinner. Really great! Stephen King wrote about this one in Danse Macabre and how it got him, too, and I thought I was the only one who remembered it. One of my favorite short horror pieces ever.

The television trailer for the movie Carrie(the original with Sissy Spacek)-I was scared of her for years.

Also the movie Picture Mommy Dead-with Don Ameche and Zsa Zsa Gabor-it would be on late night television and I would stay up late with my older sisters to watch. I can still see images in my head from this film.

Not a movie, but the Tooms episode of the X-files scared the living [censored] out of me. The movie IT still scares me, theres something very creepy about an evil clown.

Jaws never really scared me for some reason. I was really into both dinosaurs and sharks as a kid, and saw Jaws as more about Quint's insanity. Then again, that's my dad's favorite movie and the CED Videodisc we had of it must have been played over 100 times.

ET made me cry.

Night gallery has some good stuff. I have the first series on DVD, and it doesn't have the story you said. I'll watch out for more releases.

E.T. terrified me. I was in the 2nd grade and saw it with my family. About 2 weeks later, a kid in my class had a birthday party for the class to go see the movie. My mom wouldn't let me go because I had been waking up crying every night after seeing it the first time. Ironically, I've never seen it a 2nd time. I barely remember it.
