Yes, Sir, I\'ll pay $300 to see both your holecards

So I'm playing 5/10nl at Venetian tonight. I limp behind a couple other limpers with QJhh, and this lagtard makes it 50 from the blinds. I call along with some others.

The flop comes jack high with a heart. Lagtard bets 250, I'm the only caller.

The turn brings a low heart. Lagtard now stuffs for 1600 into a pot of about 750. His range is wide enough that I'm considering a call, thinking about it for about a minute, when lagtard makes the following offer:

Lagtard: "I'll show you a card for $100."
Me: "Umm....."
Lagtard: "How about I show you both my cards for $300."
Me: "Really?"
Lagtard: "Sure."

Obviously I jump at this. I give him the $300, and he flips over...

A2hh. No pair. Just a flush draw.

Um... thanks bud. I cover you, I call.

River bricks, ship it.

He just said "oh you have the jacks, nice hand." And then he asked me to change the $300 into smaller chips (I had given him 3 $100 chips), which he promptly lost in two or three hands and then he left.

He also said something about getting 5 to 1 on his flush draw and wanting to gamble.... I'm not sure if he meant his 1600 to my 300 or some other gorilla math, but whatever.

Wait, you had top pair AND a flush draw against a maniac and you considered folding?

Should have saved yourself the $300 and called him anyway.

Quite a brilliant play actually. He realized he was getting called so he increased his own pots odds substantially.

OP is the fish here for getting hustled out of $300.

Metagame. Villain will no doubt pursue a strategy in regards to showing holecards that will make the EV of OP's buying holecard peeks 0 in the longterm. OP is therefore a donk for playing with such a game theory wizard in the first place.

obviously his offer was enough for you to make the call without accepting it.
or would he do the same with a flopped/turned set?

easy call, he played it perfectly, I will think about doing this in the future as well.
He wins 300$ no matter what and he still has at least 7 outs vs anything you hold so he can win pot+300$ in total.

Smart guy but hard to find bad enough players to get 300$ in this spot

fybpm 11-18-2007 02:17 PM

Re: Yes, Sir, I\'ll pay $300 to see both your holecards

It was probably a mind[censored] for him to see that you had 2 of his outs to his heart draw. That must have made his gorilla math go bonkers and start shooting bananas out of his eyes.

NH. $300 card peek = $450 savings if he has overpair or stronger hand. Making money = leveraging.
