please wear your safety belt.

i know this is kinda gay and we have been hearing about wearing seat belts since we came out the vagine but today i was in a fairly bad car accident and if i had not had my safety belt on i probably would be at the very least very injured, maybe dead who knows. PLEASE WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT ALWAYS.

for those looking for details, we were on our way to check out a new house around dusk and on a unfamiliar street. gonores was in shotgun and said "take a u turn we missed the street" now for some reason i just slowed and started to make a u turn....i dont know what it was but i didnt check my mirror or anything....a moment of total retardation. it has actually happened before...like i was driving with some people and they were giving me directions and were like "go thru this light" and lol i did...it was red...that has happened a few times....the hearing of directions and my unfamiliarity of surroundings and i just listen and act instead of listen, think, act....its probably related to the massive amounts of acid i did as a kid.

anyways, picture three lanes and me on the right side going left and a car going over the speed limit in the middle lane....yeah...not pretty.

so i get CRUSHED and am dazed, gonores was ok and as soon as he saw i was ok he went to the other car....a minivan with two young children THANK GOD THEY WERE OK.

please wear your belt....also if you are thinking about getting a new car, get something that is known for safety....i mean i am the guy who assumes crap will never happen to him...well it did...if i was driving a piece of crap the damage to myself may have matched the car. going forward safety will be the number one decider in my vehicle purchases.

not wearing a seatbelt ranks amongst the dumbest things anyone can do. my girlfriend used to forget to buckle up when she was in the backseat and I told her to put on her seatbelt or I wouldn't go to her funeral if she died. she does it all the time now. btw I'd be dead if not for wearing my seatbelt when I was much younger, spent 10 days in the hospital. glad youre ok.

when i was in colorado driving up a pretty sheer mountain i was a bit nervous and decided it would be more safe to go without a seatbelt and the windows down and the sunroof on fsu's hummer open. the threat of a collision wreck seemed negligible, yet the fear or falling off the road/mountain somehow seemed very real. i figured a seatbelt would keep me plummeting to my death as opposed to deftly escaping via window/roof

Actually, you would have probably been thrown out a window and then had the car roll over you. I've seen the results of not wearing a seatbelt several times. In Africa public transport is done by toyata mini-vans. I've seen 26 people crammed into one of these things. There was a mini-van graveyard where they took all the vehicles wrecked in accidents. We used to pass it on a daily basis. Almost every single wreck had three star-explosions on the front windshield. That's what happens to the three heads of the dudes sitting in the front when not wearing seatbelts.

Incidently, a good friend of mine was involved in a wreck in Switzerland, their car rolled down a steep cliff. There were seven in the car, the three who weren't belted up all died. The others got away with their lives.

Re: please wear your safety belt.

I am an advocate of wearing seatbelts. Always wear mine. Though I still think it should be a personal choice and not mandated by law. Insurance is where it gets tricky.

Funny thing is when I was 19 I was involved in an accident where not wearing my seat belt helped me to be less injured. It was a side impact deal. Nearly killed me. Guy heading home from the bar after work on a Friday evening at 7:15pm.

Other lessons to be learned from OP:

-if you are lost pull over to figure out your next move
-easy on the illegal driving maneuvers like u-turns

Glad everyone is alright.

Definitely a good reminder.

My car was totaled just a month ago, and if I wasn't wearing my seatbelt I probably wouldn't be here writing this today.

Agreed. I like how it is mandatory to wear a seatbelt but somehow motorcycles are still legal. You tell me which is safer. That said, I always wear a belt - it's just stupid that it is a law.

My parents wouldn't start the car moving until my brother and I had our seatbelts on when we were kids. I mean, he wouldn't even start down the driveway.

I'm the same way now with passengers.

Re: please wear your safety belt.

I always wear mine in cars. I used to really hate them when I was younger and it didn't fit right, but now they're fine. Although I understand the argument that forcing people to wear them will save us money since our welfare state will pay for some people's medical stuff, it is a slippery slope when you start to give up personal liberty to cut costs.

Does anyone wear their seatbelt on buses? Our school buses had seatbelts, but nobody ever used them. I guess it's not as important since the bus's mass is so much greater than other cars.

i used to never wear mine. just lazy i guess. i consciously knew it was stupid every time but we all make weighted decisions in our lives and i guess i just really didn't care enough to wear it. then sometimes i would think i should wear it and i'd get in the habit, going weeks at a time always putting it on when i got in the car, but i'd eventually stop doing it again.

anyway, now i always wear it because the car i have now beeps like a MF when you don't have it on. i like that feature.

Re: please wear your safety belt.

TRUTH.

flashback to when I was sitting in shotgun and thought I could be tricky by only wearing the belt portion and not the strap that goes across the chest...10 minutes after getting comfortable I'm hydroplaning in a chrysler mini van full of people downhill straight into a car that was waiting to turn left. I stumbled out with a face full of dash board and a lip full of teeth.

Re: please wear your safety belt.

Gobbo: Missed out on golf today due to some hardcore stiffness. I also have what I have diagnosed to be a pinched nerve in my left shoulder, which makes no sense, since I was in the passenger seat and had the belt over my right shoulder. Should be good in a couple days.

All: JESUS CHRIST! WOULD YOU LOOK AT THE SIDE OF HIS CAR?!?!? WTF DOES MIKE HAVE TO DO TO KILL HIMSELF? Seriously, this incident does little to quiet that little voice in my head that tries to convince me that I am invincible...I wish that thing would go away. The minivan looked even worse than the BMW and there was hardly a drop of blood shed throughout the whole ordeal.

That MFing car is a tank. God bless those Krauts. They know how to make themselves a damn fine machine.

And, yeah...nothing brings you back out of your post-wreck haze quite like going up to the other car to see if everyone is okay and sticking your head in and hearing the sound of crying kids. That sound will make me think twice next time I feel like I need to make that phone call or text message while driving.

They sue you personally, but the insurance company has to pay your damages up to the policy maximum. The insurance company would negotiate a settlement (or, if necessary, go to court) on your behalf, b/c they're the ones on the hook.

If you're concerned, you might want to check and make sure that you have a policy liability maximum that you're comfortable with.

Edit to add: If you're in Massachusetts, car insurance has to include at least $20,000 per person in coverage for bodily injury to others, and $5,000 in coverage for damage to the personal property of others. Unless you bought the cheapest policy from your insurer, it's likely you carry more than this.
