2007 Silver Slugger awards
See article and list here
Is this award less controversial and less based on popularity than others, like the gold gloves? According to the article: "Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award winners were chosen by Major League coaches and managers, who voted for the players they felt were the best offensive producers at each position in both the American and National Leagues in 2007. Selections are based on a combination of offensive statistics, including batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage, as well as the coaches' and managers' general impressions of a player's overall offensive value. Managers and coaches were not allowed to vote for players on their own team." |

Selections are based on a combination of offensive statistics, including batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage, as well as the coaches' and managers' general impressions of a player's overall offensive value. [/ QUOTE ] Funny that these are the criteria because Hanley Ramirez led Rollins by at least THIRTY POINTS in EACH CATEGORY. 23 runs of VORP. What a joke. |

Doesn't look too bad, except for Hanley got jobbed. [/ QUOTE ] They also tend to be less controversial because they're not really as meaningful (symbolically) as the Gold Gloves, imho. Typically, the more weight a person places on something, the more controversy is possible. |

Re: 2007 Silver Slugger awards
and I think giving pitchers a Silver Slugger award is awesome. I would love to win one of those as a pitcher

Re: 2007 Silver Slugger awards
[ QUOTE ]
Is this award less controversial and less based on popularity than others, like the gold gloves? [/ QUOTE ] Yes. In addition to the "less important" reason already mentioned, offensive is more easily distilled into statistical representations of value that are commonly dispersed and accepted. For example, OPS, while far from perfect, is fairly accurate and widely accepted, especially when one tries to identify a comparable defensive statistic. Defensive measures of value are far less developed than offensive stats and also far less dispersed. Even the more advanced defensive measures sometimes substantially disagree, ala andruw jones, carl crawford, etc. (mostly because of the surprising large differences between the PBP data supplied by Stats and BIS). Basically, its a lot easier to know who is good offensively than it is to know who is good defensively because of commonly available measures of value. The more asymmetrical the distribution of high quality information about a topic, the greater the divergence of opinions about the subject. |

Pujols> Prince
Hanley > Rollins Miggy > Braun Sizemore, Granderson and Ichiro are all really close. Bonds >>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>> Lee |

Re: 2007 Silver Slugger awards
posada so 98 vs 76.
i dont see how you can it isnt close. vic had 5 more homers and drove in 24 more runs and struck out less. posada may have hit better overall but vics hits were more important since they scored more runs and that matters. |

So when Posada had RBI opportunities they were always in the bottom of the 9th or in tie games making all of his RBIs so valuable. |

That's a fantastic season, but Wright and Jones still had better. |

I would have given it to Chipper, but it's nowhere near the mistake at SS. Stupid people voting for awards can really tilt me sometimes.
