Barry\'s blog about the PPA conference

Barry Greenstein did a really neat blog about the PPA conference he recently attended. It highlights what happened extremely well, and talks about where the PPA and online poker is headed in the future.

My three favorite parts: 1. He said there will be a full Congressional meeting about online poker on November 6th, which will go over all of the gambling bills introduced.

2. He said he thinks online poker will be legalized within 6 months.

3. John Conyers of Michigan, another committee head, is going to become a cosponsor of the Frank Bill. (big news)

Addtionally, he metioned a lot of the details of what happened at the conference.

Interesting blog. Let's hope he is correct about the bills passing!

Re: Barry\'s blog about the PPA conference

I listened to his blog. Congress, especially the Dems, realize that the WTO is about to crack down and grant Antiqua IP sanctions and many billions in compensation to EU if US withdraws from its commitments in gambling. Thus, Congress is preparing to prevent this situation by enacting legislation to comply with WTO decision. Also, PPA's efforts have produced some results. But without WTO pressure Mr. Greenstein is overly optimistic about time period for legalized online poker.

Re: Barry\'s blog about the PPA conference

I posted this in another thread, but it seems more appropriate here. My apologees to anyone who already read this:

That was a great recap of the PPA Fly-in. Very insightful by Mr. Greenstein as to the concerns of Congress. I'm going to write my congressman (Dan Burton-F*) again to try to address the issues he mentions. He's never responded to me yet, FWIW.

Does anyone know more about the Nov. 6th hearing in front of Congress concerning online poker? First I've heard of it, but seems like a good time to call and write in support of poker. TE?

If this passes what are the chances that a big US company such as MGM or Harrahs lobbies to make online gambling in the 11 states that it will still be illegal in? Any chance of this actually happening or will I be forced to move?

Try 2 max illegal. Hawaii and Utah.

Does this mean that only Hawaii and Utah have completely banned online poker? If it does, what about the other nine states? Have they just tried stopping funding of the accounts?

There is nothing on the offical schedule, but if they have invited witnesses then it will more likely than not happen on or about that date.

We should all be writing and calling to build on the momentum from the trip. There is talk of new bills and of additional hearings, so the more we do, the more likely these are.

Please write, even if (especially if) your congressmen is against is.

Any policy experts want to comment on the likelihood of this happening? My gut tells me Barry is being overly optimistic but it's been a while since I've seriously followed politics.

IMO, we are still quite far off-2 years

I don't consider myself much of an expert on anything, but even quick passage of a bill in the House, runs into the Senate Judicary Committee. That is a whole different animal.

Re: Barry\'s blog about the PPA conference

I am fairly certain that Barry's time estimate is based on WTO pressure, likely IP sanctions for Antiqua, pushing the legislation.

Skallagrim 10-29-2007 12:17 PM

Re: Barry\'s blog about the PPA conference

Barry's 6 month prediction is optimistic IMO, but not impossible. Once Congress is faced with paying money or changing laws to settle the WTO dispute, something must happen. But I doubt that right now, with GWB in the Whitehouse, anything good for us will get past him. There will be much resistance there, and the usual stooges and FOF friendly reps will back him.

Whether there will be enough pressure (by us and the WTO) to overcome that is the key political dynamic, so I am not really optimistic until '09.

Hehehehe

I frame my prediction on that Bush won't let anything through, so that's 14-15 months. Generally Congress focuses on budget items at the start of a year and they'll be the new President's priorities out of the gate...which IMO really puts things on hold another 6 months. That's over simplifying obviously, but I think 20-24 months is about the right timeframe if things continue on the track
they are now.

Lots of moving parts and as others have discussed, maybe the WTO stuff will move people more than I think.

JPFisher55 10-29-2007 01:03 PM

Re: Barry\'s blog about the PPA conference

IMO only IP sanctions for Antiqua will move Congress. The music and entertainment industry, huge contributors to Dems, will pressure the DEMs to comply so IP sanctions go away.
However, IMO odds of such sanctions being granted are only 50% and 50% chance that WTO wimps out and becomes irrelevant like UN and most international entities.

Why? Even the Texas legislature came pretty close to passing a live poker bill this year. If some actual conservative Texan legislators can see that poker ain't all bad, why can't a faux-conservative Texan President?

Re: Barry\'s blog about the PPA conference

GWB has run with the anti-gambling crowd for along time. Proof can be found recently in the positions taken by the US trade rep to the WTO who has done everything possible (and costly) to try and maintain the US anti-online gambling laws. More proof is found in the actions of the Bush DOJ.

Id like to be wrong here, but I see no evidence of it.

Im still wondering what exactly that means. And should we have a phone bomb ready to go on the 5th? At the least we should be appraised of what happens. Is the Senate in on this? House [censored] is virtually [censored] meaningless.

pokerroad.com -- I think it is either the 10-31 or 11-1 show (under "Audio - PokerRoad radio"). Anyway they are all good shows with Barry on most of them -- can't hurt to have Barry talking poker to you for the better part of an hour Though unfortunately he was just filling in for his son and is not scheduled to do any more shows

In Barry's 11-2 audio blog (yes, I'm a Barry fanboy ) he said it was postponed. He didn't give a reschedule date. He did imply it would still take place with Annie Duke testifying. Apparently Conyers (Chair of the Judiciary Committee) thought Annie would be a better rep. for poker. I tend to agree as she is good at both friendly small talk and clearly making points.
