This poll is not complete. My answer to the question is, in the short term it is mostly skill with a little chance. In the long-term it is all skill.

The problem with the poll too is that most of the people voting have never played and dont really know what its like. They are just going by their biased opinion.

Well USA Today polling's math isn't very skilled- right now the 4 options are totaling 50% LOL

Re: Vote on whether poker is skill or chance

Neither choice is correct! Poker is using skill to minimize the effect of chance. Poker is both skill and chance.

The problem at the core of this debate is the ambiguity of the definition of "Chance."

To a rulemaker, a game of "chance" means a game we cannot control.
To us, "chance" is integral in poker, something that must be learned in order control longterm outcomes.

\"Vote for Skill for the Wexler Bill\"

.... The point is not to pick a "correct" choice, the point is to vote to get a political result..... Vote Skill to be politically effective.

It is silly to "vote" on the accuracy or truthfulness of a fact anyway. I am sure that pre-Columbus any "vote" would have deemed the world to be flat.

That's what I did.

.... What I meant but left unsaid is that picking one side will not get a political result. Not soon anyway.

For what it's worth, I voted Mostly Skill

Vote often. If you have other browsers, such as Firefox, use them to vote.

Forget splitting the vote we should back; "mostly skill with a little chance."

This is a PERFECT quote!

"It certainly has elements of skill," said Keith Whyte, executive director of The National Council on Problem Gambling, "but the predominant element has to be chance. Otherwise, it wouldn't be gambling."

While I disagree with the "it wouldn't be gambling with skill involved" idea, the quote as is should work perfectly.

The proper response- "well, DUHHH, it's not gambling!"

Re: Vote on whether poker is skill or chance

Takin a shot in the dark here, but you must be saying poker isn't gambling

All we have to do is prove that skill is the predominant element (which it is).

We should do the vote again, except only allow winning players to vote!! Of course the losing players think they're losing because of chance, and not for their lack of skill....

It's like whining about "bad beats" but on a grand scale. No wonder half the votes are "mostly chance."

lol @ the simplicity/one-dimensionality of the poll's language. What the game REALLY is, is a contest of who treats the element of chance THE MOST SKILLFULLY.

Is poker a game of luck or skill?

Pro Poker:

It's a game of skill with luck.
It's a gambling game which requires skill.
It's not gambling.
It's gambling where the lucky get played by the skilled.
etc.

Con:

It's all luck.

No wonder we get screwed. Their argument is easier to follow.

It is nice to see the latest numbers in the poll.

Chance 6%
Mostly chance a little skill 36%
Skill 15%
Mostly skill a little chance 46%

A PR spin mister would say 94% of the respondents say poker involves skill. Almost 3:1 pure skill vs pure chance and 60:40 more skill than chance.

Not too bad for an on-line poll IMO.

Maybe they were resetting it daily... or they're paring out the duplicate IP addresses for ballot stuffing?
