Official Law School Sucks Thread

Dear 2+2:

Don't go to law school. If you go to a really good school and/or get good grades you will get a job that pays alot. You will be miserable at that job but you will not be able to quit because you will be heavily in debt.

If you miss out on BIGLAW you may do something interesting but you will be broke. More likely you will do something excruciatingly boring and still be broke.

And the worst part, you actually have to spend three years of your life in law school. Your classmates will suck- they will talk about nothing other than what job they want/got and classes they are in. Your classes will suck too. Remember that "interesting" undergrad course you took in Con Law? Yeah, get ready for Civil Procedure.

People told me not to do it, but I didn't listen (they make 160k right out of school, how bad can it be?) Do yourself a favor- unless you genuinely love reading and writing for most of the day, don't go.

Re: Official Law School Sucks Thread

1. There is a student life forum.

2. Personally I found my classes so far to be pretty interesting, and even when they aren't interesting you can choose to not go, or to show up and just browse the internet on your laptop.

3. Nobody should be paying full price for a non-top tier law school anyways, so as for that part, you could title this "dumb people suck."

4. There may be a higher than average percentage of douches in law school, but there are plenty of great people and nobody forces you to interact with them any more than you did people in your UG classes.

5. Nobody forces you to go to a big firm. Most good schools have LRAP (loan repayment assistance programs) for people that want to go into public interest law.

6. Even if big firm life is hell, I'll be able to pay off my loans after 3 years, then I will have a very marketable resume and will be able to get a great job with more reasonable hours.

I really enjoyed law school and I enjoy being an attorney even more.

As with most things, both law school and being a lawyer are what you make of it.

OP sounds like the typical 22-23 y/o kid who goes to law school because he can't think of anything better to do. Noah's advice is good, but make up your own mind. Except the part about paying full-price for a non-premium school... that statement was objectively true imo.

Eh, I went because I enjoyed my legal classes in undergrad. I'm not personally taking on any debt, so whatever.

The thread is kind of demonstrating why the profession is not for me. A bunch of "I am great, you are an idiot" posts. But I probably should have expected that.

Can someone please explain the process one would go through to not pay full tuition? Are we talking scholarship and TA jobs as a form of assistance? Or do they simply not charge the stated price? Thanks in advance.

OP,

In the future you may wish to use the standard format for all "Official" threads.

It is:

***Official (x) Thread***

so, you should have used

***Official Law School Sucks Thread***

Many schools have vastly different rates for "instate" tuition - when I was deciding where to go, the difference between the school in the state I lived at the time and in the next state over was about 15k/yr.

To OP. I agree, LS sucks. Lawyering is a job, and like any job it sometimes sucks and sometimes doesn't.

Commercial Paper and Secured Transactions will make you long for Civ Pro. Studying for the bar is also a treat. Enjoy.

Your coming around.

My advice, not that you asked for it or probably want it, is to finish school and become a embittered anti-social contract attorney like me. You can peruse 2+2 all day at work. Move to an area where contract attorneys make $40/hr and there is a great poker scene (cough, L.A.) and live happily every after. If you can.

Edit: I hope your taking CP and ST b/c they are on the bar in the state you hope to be admitted to. Otherwise, that's your own fault.

Peace, my brother. I do hope you find some happiness in the profession. I have to sign off now because I am not allowed to work past 7 p.m. at this law firm. I'm only here until 7 because I decided to take off Friday and want to go to the Sands AC implosion tomorrow night, so I have to get as close to 40 hours as I can.

Ya' follow?

I really like all 8 weeks of law school I've gotten through. It hasn't been very hard and doesn't require nearly the amount of time people claim it does. And the people here are mostly nice.

Reading for most of the day? We have to read like 20-30 pages per class, sometimes with spikes to 40-50. Am I getting really lucky?

I even think "take it if it's on the bar" advice is bad. You should only take it if you plan on practicing it. You can learn what you need to during bar study. Best decision I made was to ignore the advice of folks who said that you should take as many bar classes as possible. It'll only make you hate law school even more.

Re: Official Law School Sucks Thread

I went to law school mostly because I hated working and wanted to be a student again. I enjoyed law school, but (no surprise) hated working as a lawyer just as much as I hated working before law school. So I decided to become a student again...this time getting a PhD.

I'm only a couple month in, but this seems like where I belong...and they actually pay me to be a student! Law school was really expensive, and ultimately a waste of three years of my professional life, but at least it showed me what I really wanted to be doing. Plus, I developed a research plan for my PhD while in law school, and got most of my recommendation from law school professors (I didn't really get to know any profs as an undergrad) so I couldn't have gotten into an elite PhD program if I hadn't gone to law school first.

So I have pretty mixed opinions about the whole thing. For me, I think it was something I had to do to ultimately get me to the right path, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else unless they really want to be a lawyer. If you just want to be a student again, you'll save $60K/year by going for a PhD instead.

I'm talking about scholarships. We're saturated with lawyers, so spending $35k/yr for a mid-level school, unless you dominate, can cost you more than your expected return. At least that's my understanding...

Yeah, I liked it first semester of 1L too. And those people you think are awesome will become insufferable at exam and interview time.

Give it a year. Wait until you've wasted a week of your life acc checking a retarded article for your journal, realized your classes have nothing to do with actual practice, and have subjected yourself to weeks of thoroughly insufferable interviews.

Law school is boring, but easy. Somehow the $40k next summer and $160k starting salary make it bearable.

"My gut reaction to this is that it's really stupid. I'm not sure why I have this reaction. I think it's a rejection of the idea that law can be reduced to a mano-a-mano challenge the way that poker can. Also, I think I'm in total disbelief that a law student could ever "out-debate" a sitting Supreme Court Justice in his prime. The fact that someone would even suggest that this is possible smacks of gunnerism. But maybe I'm putting to much thought into this."

I will be making 3100/wk next summer to do minimal work and get taken out to lunch.

Two years from now I will be starting at 160k+, plus bonus, with less than 100k in debt between college and law school.

I will be 24.

I will pay off my loans in a few years of biglaw and then have a marketable resume for finding a job that pays well and has good hours.

plus law school continues to be enjoyable, getting involved in interesting classes and playing poker/skipping boring ones.

didn't have class on friday, tomorrow only one class, so i think i'll sleep til noon, eat lunch, go to the gym, go to my one class, come home and take a nap, take my gf out to dinner and drinks, come home and have sex, play some poker, then go to bed.
