Vegas: Not Getting a Room your First Night in Town
Situation: Fly in late Wednesday Night, 11pm or later.
Have you ever not paided for a room that night and simply stayed up and played. Then checked into a room Thursday. How early have you been able to check in? What is your overall experience with this? |
Re: Vegas: Not Getting a Room your First Night in Town
Havent stayed up all night before to save on the cost of a room, however I have checked in as early as 10am.
I would think mid-day is very doable in most resorts. |
Re: Vegas: Not Getting a Room your First Night in Town
I used to do this in college quite frequently.
The only real pitfall you gotta watch for is that if your first session upon gettin' into town turns out to be really crappy, you (if you're like most human beings) will be less inclined to wanna play until you can check in. This isn't really a huge issue as 1) the odds of a truely crappy session are fairly low and 2) you can always just play lower or even find ways to blow off some time in Vegas. As far as checkin' in, it depends on the day of the week. Typically, Sat., Sun., and to a lesser degree Mon. and Fri. will be toughest to check in early. But I imagine only under odd circumstances would you not be able to check in prior to 9 or 10. |
Re: Vegas: Not Getting a Room your First Night in Town
Why not just buy a nice condo when you get there. Offer a few dollars for anything near the strip and you'll probably get it. Soon, they'll be free.

Re: Vegas: Not Getting a Room your First Night in Town
Checked in early at the Mandalay Bay and Palms, also mid-week. Played poker all night, hit the wall for the next day after checking in..slept all day unfortunately. It's a wednesday night, shouldn't cost too much to pony up for an extra night.

Re: Vegas: Not Getting a Room your First Night in Town
Contemplated this exact plan several times. Everytime I come to the conclusion that money saved from one less hotel (week)night < value lost from playing lousy poker on little sleep.

noon is fine. I've done this but usually slept in my car or took an afternoon nap.

Re: Vegas: Not Getting a Room your First Night in Town
I have never done this, but it would be very possible for me. Not because of poker playing, but because of drinking and not going to bed. Last time in Vegas, I got up for work at 6am on Friday, and got to Vegas about 10:30 or 11pm. Started drinking as soon as we got checked in, and didn't go to bed until 2pm on Sat. Then got up at 7pm on Sat, played some sober poker for 4 or 5 hours, then started drinking again, and stayed up all night drinking, then thought it would be good to go play poker drunk, and sobered up while playing, then wandered around, and finally got to bed around 1am on Monday. I kicked my bodies ass that weekend.

Re: Vegas: Not Getting a Room your First Night in Town
I do this almost every trip to vegas, it works well but getting stuck right away sucks when you dont really have much else to do, the benches in the forum shops are pretty comfortable for a good 2 hour early morning nap tho... only bad part is much shadier people are also doing the same (not sure why they dont clear it out more) and its a lil weird with $4-5k in your pocket

Re: Vegas: Not Getting a Room your First Night in Town
I am on the east coast, and I have arrived around 11 pm several times. It is 2 am east coast time and there's no way I could make it all night w/o sleep w/o wrecking my trip. That said, if a hotel isn't busy, they'll let you check in early. I've gotten into rooms as early as 10:30 am midweek.

Re: Vegas: Not Getting a Room your First Night in Town
Never done this, but I've done the opposite and stayed up all night and gotten a flight out at 6 or 7am.

Re: Vegas: Not Getting a Room your First Night in Town
Used to do this in A.C. all the time. Worked well, but I was just there for poker. If you're there to party and want to enjoy yourself, then don't go cheap.

The only extra was that I rented a car so I had a place to put my bags and snooze if necessary (it wasn't). |

Re: Vegas: Not Getting a Room your First Night in Town
FWIW, my plan is to drive down to AC, play at the Borgata until my flight at 5PM and arrive in LV at 8PM on Wednesday. Play at the MGM Grand (leave bags with bell services) until the following morning and then switch over to the Venetian until they have a suitable room ready.
But I'm used to playing 30 hour+ sessions. btw, anyone know what's up (i.e. what gathering) with room rates Oct 24-27? I just got an online quote for $699 for a Wednesday night (24th) at the Venetian. Sat was only $499. |
Re: Vegas: Not Getting a Room your First Night in Town
I am doing it this weekend in Vegas. Flying in at 11pm on Friday, going straight to Bellagio where I am staying Saturday and Sunday, playing all night then checking in early. I plan to sleep from around 10am to 5pm. No reason to pay 280 for 4 hours of room. This may backfire however if i start tilting around 5am and have nowhere to go.

Re: Vegas: Not Getting a Room your First Night in Town
standard operating procedure i thought. i have had difficulties checking in early before, though. if you're a night owl and have no issues staying up past 2-3 on a weekend night normally, it can be done. sleep on the plane ride in, drink less than you normally would when you get in, if at all. and if all else fails sleep in the racebook when the east coast tracks open in the morning.

Re: Vegas: Not Getting a Room your First Night in Town
I love doing this actually. What you do is fly in, and have an extra long session the first night. If you survive the first night, the rest of your trip should go well. I sleep during the day and when you hit the tables around 7-8 pm you will be right in the thick of the action all night.
The secret comes around 3-6 a.m. when everyone else hits the wall or is at the peak of their drunkeness and you are still able to focus and start hitting the tables for some big pots. You will hit the bed around 7-10 a.m. and rinse and repeat as needed. IF the trip is about poker and not about partying, g.f.'s, or other extra-curriculars, this to me is by far the best strategy and now you know my secret. |
