National Boss Day

Never knew it existed until today. My Secretary gave me two fine cigars, really made my day. Knowing OOT, I'm sure you all can top that.

I'm already giving my boss close to 1/3 of my life. That's enough.

Wow, people actually celebrate "National Boss Day"? One of my coworkers and I noticed it on the calendar yesterday and joked about it; didn't realize people took it seriously.

Maybe I'll actually do a full hours worth of work today.

I'm talking sixty minutes.

"non-mandatory but highly encouraged potluck" for staff to feed the bosses at my law firm.

Be careful. Doing too much too quickly could have unintended disastrous results like an increase in workload or the dreaded higher expectations.

Email from my boss today:

Well, it is all very nice of you to honor the boss types around here, whomever they may be, on this beautiful day, but I do not want anyone to think that this type of hallmark ritual changes any of the basic analysis--- that every day is bosses day as far as I am concerned and I expect you all, with our thanks of course, to work your selves within an inch of your lives every second you are here and even when you are not here. Life is not about fun, but work and more work, as all of you who help us here know, and then, as a reward, most of us will die at some point.

My girlfriend's roommate, who has some uber-corporate job in pharmaceuticals, bought her bosses gifts. I almost threw up in my mouth. If I ever get to the point where I'm buying my boss presents for anything, remind me to kill myself.

My staff was unaware.

My announcing it to the room didn't seem to have much of an affect.

Damn, I didn't get anything either. My employees work from home though, so I got screwed.

Sounds like you need to talk to your new receptionist about her "duties." Clearly, you made a bad choice on your new hire.

Managerially so,

I have historically given my bosses small gifts at Christmas. Is this standard?

For years our boss never gave us anything and we reciprocated. Then a new VP was hired in our group and he convinced everyone to pitch in for a gift certificate to the boss's favorite restaurant.

Right before the holiday, we give our boss the card with the gift certificate in it. After he opens and reads it, he makes this attempt at humor, "You all didn't have to do this. Making your lives miserable every day is thanks enough for me." Cue awkward silence. Oddly, we haven't gotten him anything since.
