Any Good Anime Recommendations?
Anyone know any cool anime? I'm not a diehard fan or anything, but does anyone know any good movies that would appeal to a guy who generally watches North American movies? I like good action and drawings, but I hate cheesy Japanese plots and the sappy love stories they throw in.
I've watched the Fatal Fury movies, and I liked those, but I didn't like Appleseed. |
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
have you seen Akira? If not, that's the one you should start with.

Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
I'm not a big fan of anime - mostly because I can't get past the writing, I think - but there are a couple that I love.
Dominic's right, start with Akira. This is the first anime that made a big crossover into the US market. Second, and my personal favourite, Ghost in the Shell. Despite being 15 years old now, it still has some of the best animation you'll see anywhere, and even if the dialogue is clumsy, the story isn't. I wish James Cameron had done something with the option to do a live action version he had for a while. There is no love story, despite the heroine being the hottest thing since Jessica Rabbit. Forget the sequel and the tv series. Third, Grave of the Fireflies. Unlike the other two, which are action films, this is a drama. It's about two children trying to survive during WWII in a bombed out Japanese city. Don't expect to have fun, do expect to see one of the saddest films of any sort you've subjected yourself to. Additional suggestions if you don't want to go with the drama: Ninja Scroll, Perfect Blue, and Metropolis (this is an anime version of the Fritz Lang film). |
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
I also remember seeing Guyver twelve years ago. I don't remember much about it, except I remember it was horrible, and I was waiting for it to end. That is the kind of experience I'm trying to avoid.
In an unrelated note: I also watched The Hulk today. The only thing good about that was the Hulk animation. What a terrible story/movie. |
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
Update: I'm currently downloading Ninja Scroll, Akira, and the Fatal Fury movies
|
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
If you're into cars you should get the Initial D series. There's a real life movie out too
|
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
Akira and Ghost in the Shell are ones I would skip at first. They don't have as easy and broad an appeal as things like Spirited Away, Castles in the Sky, Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Service, and others by Miyazaki. Other series, like Full Metal Jacket and Cowboy Bebop, are also easier to get into and have likeable characters(for the most part).

Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
i second cowboy bebop/ghost in the shell sac

Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
Death note
A death god drops a death note to the mortal world, a genius student picks it up/ finds out what it does (you write people's name on the note, and they die) and starts cleansing the world, by killing criminals. Another genius who is on very top hierarchy of world wide CIA like organization, investigates the mysterious death of these criminals, and tries to find out who is behind all the deaths, by using some crazy logic/deduction skills. I think all poker players will love the anime because there is so much logical/deductive reasoning exercised by both characters trying to get the upper hand. |

Downloading.....er I mean renting the dvd right now. Going to check it out. I generally prefer the series as oppose to the anime movies. There's so much more character/plot development that is so good about anime series. |
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
Cowboy Bebop is the best anime I have ever seen. It's really good.
Samurai Champloo is about ninja's and stuff and it's really good also. Ninja Scroll is a pretty good action movie. There is a big long anime rec. thread in OOT, started by raptor I think. It has alot of good rec in th ere. I like the original dragonball(not Z) anime series. It's more for little kids but I thought it was pretty good when I saw it about 7 years ago. Beserk- Another anime series ppl say is really great. I just got it yesterday and havent started watching it yet but it's supposed to be really good. Record of the Lodoss War- A long movie that I havent seen since high school. It's like a fantasy Tolkien type movie that I remember being good but it's been so long I cant say it's great. But It will prolly be good if you like fantasy type stuff. Miyazaki- he is huge in japan. All his movies are pretty good but Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke being the best. They are really good and worth watching. I didnt really like Akira. I saw it along time ago but I could barely get through it. |
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
Also the first 50 eps of Roroni Kenshin are really good.

Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
For peoples looking for a departure from the theme of massive violence, check out Paranoia Agent. It's a series of 13 episodes dealing with MADNESS. The chances this show takes are amazing. Give it a shot.
Also there is a bit of violence, so if that's your bag you'll still be pleased. |
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
maybe it's just me, but i didn't find Grave of the fireflies that sad. the kid angered me more then anything. he was just so stubborn and stupid, most of that [censored] could have been avoided. i mean, don't get me wrong, it wasn't a joy of a movie.
also, i was a big fan of the Akira graphic novels, and although the animation is great in the movie. the story doesn't even come close to the books. i know it's hard to cram that much story in 2 hours, but i was very dissappointed in the movie. i never would have thought i would like spirited away, but i found it very very enjoyeable. i was quite surprised. princess mononoke was also a very very good move. i just finished watching tekkonkinkreet. and although it was a bit hard to follow at times, i found it good, not great. i'll be watching paprika soon, which is supposed to be visually stunning. |
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
Are you nerdy or geeky? I liked Serial Experiments Lain. It is a short (13 half hour episode) thing about "cyberspace" and it has a unique graphical style.
|
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
I know very little about anime, but Miyazaki's movies are beautiful and great.

Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
One more for paranoia agent. I thought it was amazing.
Any other recommendations for mind [censored] ? I love these kind of animes. Also Samurai Champloo and Beserk were also very good. |
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
I'm not much of an anime fan at all, but I'd definitely second the Death Note suggestion. Most of the episodes can be found online if you know where to look.

One more for paranoia agent. I thought it was amazing. [/ QUOTE ] Storyline sounds cool but from a quick image search I'm not sure I would like the style of animation... I watched about 1/2 of 'Parasite Dolls' on Netflix watch instantly -- not stellar but kind of a cool vibe. 'Boomers' (humanoid robots) are running amok. The story follows a police squad that tracks them down. Adult themed. |
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
Cowboy Bebop.
That is all. |
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
Cowboy Bebop is the greatest. I like Great Teacher Onizuka and love hina.

Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
Classic Recommendations:
Cowboy Bebop (Use this as an into if you think you hate anime or want your friends to enjoy it) DBZ Beserk Akira Good Anime: Samurai Champloo Neon Genesis Evangelion Fullmetal Alchemist Bleach (Still Making New Chapters) Prince of Tennis Naruto (Still Making New Chapters) One Piece (Still Making New Chapters) Eureka 7 One Piece (Still Making New Chapters) Rurouni Kenshin Hunter X Hunter Blood+ (IF you really like Vamps) Gungrave (personally, like it a lot) Ergo Proxy Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (amazing) I would not recommend Lodoss War to anyone b/c it is so bad imo. P.S. There is this one amazing amv that basically has a lot of good anime in it. |
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
Found It:
You can download it from here as well as see all the anime he uses, its amazing (as well as his own original content he adds in) http://www.animemusicvideos.org/memb...o.php?v=147151 |
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
<-------- Definitely Cowboy Bebop. The name is kind of odd but it's a fantastic intro to anime. The show is just so stylish and cool - often seemingly without even trying. It's also one of only a few anime offerings that has a terrific dub. The style of the show is often compared to Tarrantino, though it's not as thoughtlessly violent. And the music kicks ass. Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
I'll second "Full Metal Alchemist". I've only seen the first two episodes, but I was enthralled.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is a great Anime film, with the proper budget to do it justice. Very cool visual style. |
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
If you want something somewhere in between American superstyling and Japanese flavaflav, consider downloading the season of Afro Samurai.
|
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
havent seen it for years but my all time favorite is "fire and" ice so sick anyone else seen it?
|
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
Cowboy Bebop / maybe Trigun for some humor
I'll second Ergo Proxy. It's a bit different with some very strange episodes but is quite good. You can find the entire thing at stage6.divx.com I believe. |
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
Desu nôto !
I suggest you watch the series before you watch the movies. Elfen Lied is a really beautifull anime only 20 episodes tho. And just watch bleach & full metal alchemist in any case. |
Re: Any Good Anime Recommendations?
Speed grapher series rocks! Loving it so far, going on vol. 3.
