NYTimes vs. Every Other Newspaper

IMO the NYTimes is lightyears ahead of every other newspaper. I've read the Boston Globe, I'm from boston and that is supposed to be pretty good but it doesn't hold a candle to the NYTimes. The NYTimes really covers the news that matters, the international stuff of substance and in detail and stays away from sensational crap. Everyone agrees with me right?

It's the best out there. Sometimes I deliberately schedule flights on Sundays so I can read the Sunday edition.

Yeah, it's pretty good. I'm too dumb to read the WSJ.

Re: NYTimes vs. Every Other Newspaper

i don't like the NYT, not because it is left-leaning, but because it is just as slanted as a lot of other papers (in either direction), but tries to cover it up by being very long-winded and allegedly in-depth. some of the supplemental sections are very good just because they are fairly unique, but in general i can't stand it as a paper and i only read it if i have no other choice.

it sucks because it is better than a lot of other papers at reporting on issues that are important to me, but i still can't stand it.

I'm a lefty liberal, and even I have occasionally read a NYT headline or article and thought "WOW is that biased!" I don't think I realized anyone pretended it wasn't. Hmmm.

Still, the writing, depth, and breadth of stories it covers are WAY ahead of any other paper.

Doesn't matter anymore, though. Internet news ftw.

The newspaper is only ok, which I guess is better than other newspapers.

I really like the magazine though. Especially when some crazy reporter goes to the Middle East and reports back on what people tell him on the 3rd day of driving around, with no cameras around.

Ah, the Sunday magazine, that part I miss. I really liked the medical mystery thing that'd be in every third issue or so, and the ethics column was great. No better bathroom reading than the NYT Sunday magazine.

Fark > All news.

As a liberal hippie eating my lucky charms and smoking my joint at breakfast before not going to work I sometimes find the articles are a little slanted, yes, however so is every newspaper in the world, at least the times isn't sneaky about it.

Washington post better? This is a joke right?

How did this thread become some retarded political argument? Take that [censored] to the politics forum, losers.

The NYT has a good Magazine section, its art and cultural criticism are top notch (e.g. AO Scott and Manohla Dargis in the film reviews), and the writing and editing are crystal clear. It's a very good paper.

But I also like the LA Times and Chicago Tribune.

The worst major metropolitan newspaper I've seen is the Miami Herald.

A few notes:

I read that Sunday Times every week, but BBC online is better than the NY Times.

Anyone who calls the NY Times "elitist" is likely not well educated. I find that most people who refer to anything as elitist prefer reading comic strips or tabloids like the Post.

And as a challenge to everyone who classifies the NY Times as liberal hippie propaganda, please post a link to an article that you feel is biased in some way. Most of you will resort to googling "ny times" +biased and come up with some article someone wrote about liberal bias, but I'd prefer you peruse the online edition this morning and post some links to some left-slanted stories.

BTW I hope I don't have to mention this, but the op/ed page doesn't count. I'm talking about hard news.

1 - Unfortunately for you, OP didn't omit the op/ed page from review. Since the op/ed page is such a big part of a person's perception of a paper it is tough to separate the two.

2 - Your challenge is flawed also. The way a paper presents "news" can carry no less bias than the actual article at times. For example (I did find this in 2.7 seconds on Google, btw), 3 glowing ( 2 front page ) Democratic candidate profiles in a few weeks. 1 Republican profile in the last 3 months. These things happen over and over. Then add the op/ed in the mix and their agenda is clear.

3 - Your comment on "elitist" is telling too. Not to mention wrong.

But, hey, zero for three is batting a thousand dependent upon how you look at it...

I am generally liberal but even I see the times bias. In fact, as I get older the biases of the Times and NPR are starting to drive me away a little because I hate being told what to think. There are two issues in a media bias, (1) bias in the stories (2) story selection. Presumably the newspaper should be writing the news of the day (at least in their news articles). This includes what 1 story they select for the day out of Iraq, etc. Presumably on slow days they should vary it up.

Easiest example is the Business section will pick the doom and gloom stories during a GOP presidency but not so much during a democratic one. In this particular case, I happen to agree with the doom and gloom stories, but I don't find the Times a credible source because I won't get a counterpoint.
