Daniel N. Would you talk to him at the table???
Daniel N. is my favorite TV star poker player. However, when he starts talking to the other players (read suckers), I jump up and scream at the TV screen, "Don't talk to him!"
I do love Daniel but he is a charming, funny, charismatic con artist. I am a con artist too and consider it a compliment. Would you talk to him at the poker table??? I would advise against it. He seems to be the best of all time at starting some cute talk that provides him a read. Here in West Texas, there are ritualistic, exact phrases you hear over and over. In fifty years of poker, there are some I do not understand. When some smooth talker, fancy walker like Daniel comes forth with his watermelon conversation, folks say, "I can't be snitching off my hand." With Daniel, I would be as quite as Kaw Liga, a cigar store Indian. I wouldn't answer any of his questions unless he pulled his pawn shop pistol. I have scenes about this in my novel coming out later. The one time I am primed to talk is if I have the nuts. I watch the other player. If he looks as if he is about to fold or especially if he raises up his cards, I say, "Let me have this one, we will let you have the next one." I don't know why but that works a lot. In the same situation, I might ask about top pair, "Do you have a Queen?" This came up when I had a set. The guy replied, "Do you have a Queen?" I said, "I have a kicker." He called. Was this illegal? I can see the angle shooters using the rules about NOT telling your exact hand. A bad rule. When Daniel starts talking, put your money in your shoe. Johnny Hughes |

Re: Daniel N. Would you talk to him at the table???
Ahhh, so that's how he does it. Next time I play $10/20 limit with Daniel at my local casino, I'll be sure to keep my mouth shut when he starts asking me questions. I knew there had to be a reason he cleans me out everytime!

Re: Daniel N. Would you talk to him at the table???
I talk plenty at the poker table, but generally it's between the action. When I'm in a hand, I rarely talk at all, for fear of my inflection telling someone what they want to know. And I never talk about my hand.
If I were ever at a table with Daniel, I'd have to do the same. He's a friendly guy, real disarming, so it seems people want to talk to him. But as Johnny points out, he's the best in the business at reading, and people just give him way too much information by responding. Cheers, Carl. |

Re: Daniel N. Would you talk to him at the table???
True story:
The other night I had a weird dream. I was on high stakes poker playing with DN and some other dudes. One of them was a 20 something internet pro. Somehow the subject of Annie Duke came up. I said she would destroy this guy HU and I would bet 100k on it. I have no recollection of even playing a hand on the show. Afterwards, DN comes up to me and says 'do you know who that guy was?' I get a sinking feeling. He mumbles something about '10-8 suited' and I interpret this to mean the guy is some sort of uber-lag. Sinking feeling intensifies. Cut to the next episode. I enter wearing Daniel's Dracula haircut from the late 90s. Jennifer Harmon and Howard begin laughing hysterically. Daniel looks pissed off. End of dream. So, to answer the OP -- I would talk to him but only whilst wearing that 'do and it would only be quotes from Dracula. |
Re: Daniel N. Would you talk to him at the table???
I would never talk to Negreanu. I agree completely with what u said and always thought himself as a hustler full of table-talk angles.

Re: Daniel N. Would you talk to him at the table???
I would talk to him just like I would pretty much any other player. No biggie.
If they can get a read on my general skill based on how I talk then no biggie. Not sure I was going to fool them anyway into believing I am something other than what I am: A kind of thinking player who mostly sucks and doesn't have the most tourney experience in the world. During the hand obviously I'm not going to try to out-con him or respond to his speculation on what I have. Outside the hand though I don't think it's that big a deal and if it is then good for him. Besides, maybe we'll get along famously and then go out drinking afterwards and have a good time. We would be dubbed the 'squinty-blinky twins' and he could ask me for advice about male-pattern baldness. We would give Mike Sexton a holler and he would meet us at whatever club we were going to and we would do shots and play quarters or some other silly drinking-game and a good time would be had by all. |
Re: Daniel N. Would you talk to him at the table???
only people over 40, ppl who watch poker on tv, and internet retards who really suck use terms like "sucker" in poker talk.

Re: Daniel N. Would you talk to him at the table???
Watched a wsop main event episode a couple of years ago when DN started talking to a swedish guy who held top two pair after a river bet in a quite large pot, and DN held top pair no kicker. I remember how open the swedish guy was answering every question telling him he was from sweden and that he was also turkish bla bla and it struck me how relaxed he seemed. DN folded the hand although the pot was quite large and he was short on chips.

Re: Daniel N. Would you talk to him at the table???
I had Daniel at my table one time in a tournament. We were only involved in one hand together in which he raised my BB from middle position and I reraised with AK. I was perfectly quiet and still and I could still feel like he could read me like a book. I bet the flop and he called and I bet the turn and he folded.
I know Hellmuth's fond of saying he can see into other people's souls. Even though I won the hand that's the way I felt when Negreanu was studying me. |

Obviously, you can tell a lot from his demeanor when answering the question too. I just saw the Five Diamond Classic, and Johny probably saw it too. Amateur raises, someone reraises, Daniel and amateur flat call. The flop is QQJ or something like that and it is checked around. Amateur pushes the flop on a pure bluff with 87s. Reraiser folds an underpair. Daniel asks amateur about how many chips and some other stuff. I am sure gets a read, but he actually had pot odds to call with the gutshot, flush draw and overcards, unless it was real likely amateur had a monster. |

Re: Daniel N. Would you talk to him at the table???
I met Negreanu in Barcelona, he did a of commentating for EPT Live and I was at the feature/final table. We hung out a bit in Barcelona.
A week later we sat next to each other at the feature table in WSOPE, he was very chatty of course. I would talk to him in between hands, but never during. My friends watching the telecast told me it was obvious Negreanu had a lot of respect for me, we really didn't play too many pots. He was mostly talking about how tough it was before the internet to become a poker player, and I was just saying stuff like "why the hell would you play poker without the internet ldo" Fwiw, Negreanu played very well, and is a very nice person. |
Re: Daniel N. Would you talk to him at the table???
do tell
imo. |
Re: Daniel N. Would you talk to him at the table???
A_Jung - this touches on another point. Yes, Negreneau can get pretty good reads on his opponents a lot of times. Particularly the amateurs. But he also does occasionally give away information with his chattyness too imo.
Now whether I would actually be able to successfully read him or whether I would easily take the bait and fall victim to his false-tells or chatter or whatever is an entirely different topic. But I suspect some good people-readers can at least gain part of the advantage back from Negreneau due to his own chattyness. |
