Never Again - Planet Hollywood on Tuesday nights

Tonight I decided to play at Planet Hollywood. No special reason except I thought I could find a nice chair to sit on the second floor so I could read my book, I was wrong so I played pokah instead because thats what true degenerates do. Unfortunately they only had 1/2 running but it was short handed so i jumped in.

It was a nice game, the atmosphere in the room was great, the dealers were competent, and The Grinder was primping like a peacock (he hosts a tournament there as well as the high-limit Chinese Poker game). Until 9PM... then it was all downhill.

Some brain surgeon in Planet Hollywood management thinks its a good idea for Tuesday nights to be a free-for-all Karaoke experience featuring the worst singers you could ever possibly hear. I've heard dying cows who sound healthier than some of the off-key home town heros, it was so bad that I went to another casino to continue playing. Now imagine if I was in the pit laying black on black BJ action, thats potentially a huge loss for the cassino if they drive away anyone due to bad singing (its audible over 1/3 of the casino floor!). IMHO the person who gave Karaoke night the red light should be fired, there are good reasons why no other casino does that on the main floor LDO.

[/end rant]

It has been about two years since I been there, but do they still have that Karaoke across the street from the Belaggio? Walking that part of the strip was bad enough.

Agreed, that person should be fired and fried.

Unlike the poker room, BJ players aren't opposed to others having fun. It doesn't bother a BJ player, or a dice player, or a slot player. I'm sure the fun atmosphere HELPS the pit more than it hurts it.

I went on a CardPlayer Cruise once. They set up the poker tables in what is normally "The Library" on ship, in the main atrium. On the same level, just down the hall, was the piano bar, which featured nonstop drunken sing-a-longs. The piano bar was enclosed, but the door was propped open, inviting one and all come in and have some fun. The music poured out into the entire atrium.

Angry poker players kept coming from the poker room to shut the door.

Have you ever been to Planet Hollywood? This is a Karaoke fun gambling crowd, Karaoke on the main floor cheapens the main casino floor. Now Karaoke upstairs on the second level makes total sense, there is a bar up there that is not being used and could really rock with that type of silliness but on the main floor? Thats retarded. It must affect gambling yield.

I guess this is mostly correct. But at the Horseshoe-tunica for example there are many BJ players who whine and complain a LOT if their table is too near the band on a night when they are particularly loud.
Obviously they have some options to try to get further away from the band if it bothers them that much.

I remember playing in a casino in the NE that I eventually worked at and absolutely LOVED being near the band. (Bj/Craps). The main reason besides being able to psuedo dance in my chair, without being alcohol induced as they didn't serve, was that I didn't have to hear some schmuck douche telling me what I should and shouldn't do with my $10 bets and how to play my cards. I think with younger people playing poker these days it is less of an issues, but on Mon night while they were reviewing a play at the very end of the football game (at the time it showed 1 second remaining on the game clock) I was called over to a table because one of the players would like the players that were watching the game to be quiet.

Re: Never Again - Planet Hollywood on Tuesday nights

Horseshoe-Tunica's old poker-room was right next to the bar where the band would play every night. Pretty loud sometimes even though they were directed towards the main-floor.

Some players complained but I rather liked it. Thought it kept the players more lively and a bit more awake. I get kind of annoyed at players who sit there falling asleep at the table practically drooling and/or snoring and the band kind of helped the degenerates fight the sleepies a bit better.

Obviously there were occasional probs with hearing the other players but I don't think this was as much of an issue back in the days when I don't think they even spread any cash-game NL.

Not nearly as annoying as overpoweringly bad karaoke I suspect.

Then there were a couple times I played BJ at Sam's Town Tunica kind of near their little bar area. They would try to make it an attraction on Thurs or Fri evenings or something and would bring in a DJ to play music for old-people to dance to.
But they would neglect to turn-off the music over the casino floor. So I was sitting there playing BJ with this rather annoying mix of 2 different songs at roughly the same volume from where I was sitting.
Basically listening to Bill Joel and the Beach Boys at the same freaking time. Really annoying.

LOL. I forgot to report about that! There was a convention, valet was full. And yes, my face was red.

So I parked on the 5th floor and walked precisely 608 steps from the mall entrance to the Casino entrance.

And yes, I counted.

my favorite joke about the Planet Hollywood when I was there was that all the chips have the PH logo on them - that's their main visible identifier, and it kept making me think of Phil Hellmuth -

on a subliminal and subconscicious level, I feel like my mind was raped continously with the image of phil hellmuth - otherwise, they didn't have karokee at the time, so I enjoyed it.

THANK YOU! I am now no longer the only person on the planet who has counted my paces from car to poker room in Las Vegas!

Someone was making fun of me at the poker table a few days ago when I mentioned this. But really... if you're walking alone what ELSE do you have to do? Why not count paces?

608 paces at 3' per pace is .34 miles each way. Rivels MGM. But since I don't think it's as far from the Planet garage to the poker room as from the MGM garage to the poker room, I suspect TT must take slightly smaller steps than I.

The GNU units command claims "pace" is 2.5'. In that case, .29 miles.

How far is it in Caesars?

bav 10-11-2007 03:01 AM

Re: Never Again - Planet Hollywood on Tuesday nights

I don't recall my exact counts. It was maybe 640 paces in MGM, 440 at Caesars, like 200 at Harrah's. And I don't do this ALL the time, nor have I counted at every room I've played. I perhaps do have some OC tendancies, but they aren't THAT pronounced. But I have also gotten out Google Earth and used the path measurement tool to trace out paths from garage to poker room in those casinos where I know where each is. That basically agreed with my pace-count estimates of distance.

pig4bill 10-11-2007 03:14 AM

Re: Never Again - Planet Hollywood on Tuesday nights

This was from your car or valet? If from your car, variance would be huge. Also, valet at Caesars is considerably closer than the self-park, and seems to be available most of the time. Whereas MGM valet is usually full. I remember when MGM first opened. I visited like on their 3rd day, before the Grand Opening, and they were running trams from the parking garage to the hotel. Guess that idea got old in a hurry.

Harrah's didn't seem that far. I thought it was one of the shortest walks, besides Wynn.

bav 10-11-2007 03:29 AM

Re: Never Again - Planet Hollywood on Tuesday nights

I've valeted three times in my life in Vegas. The first was cause it was 6:59 and the tourney started at 7. The other two were at Caesars while my plantar fasciitis and/or bruised heel was acting up particularly. I actually LIKE walking when it doesn't hurt. It's sorta like exercise and people keep telling me that's good for me.

I got a good spot at MGM for the count. Similarly I was on level 5 on top of the close garage for the Caesars count. Yes, the counts will be much higher if you're parked far away.

Harrah's is a very short walk. 200 paces ain't much. It mighta been 150 or 240...don't recall 'xactly. Wynn is probably about half of Harrah's (depending where you get to park). Only place I can think of shorter than Harrah's other than Wynn is TI. I recommend firing up Google Earth, zooming in, and drawing paths--a lot faster and easier than walking it.

I still think Orleans (late night) is shorter then them all. Park right smack next to the poker room front door and pretty much roll from your car seat to the poker chair with almost no walking involved.

Good point Randy. I like to park at NYNY (when doing the MGM thing). Coming from the Red Rock area, I don't have to cross the Strip and it's super easy leaving down Trop (returning home). Third floor at NYNY is best for this (park in the far S.E. corner area) IMHO.

Nobody is shorter than the Wynn. The poker podium is about 30 feet from the garage entrance. Yes, I've stayed at the Orleans several times.

I thought Harrah's was shorter than TI, but maybe not if you're talking the poker room. I've never played at Harrah's, just stayed in the hotel.
