ASKme about being vegan

the vegetarian thread made me realize that some people are curious about this topic. here is an ASKme thread for you to find the answers to those insomnia-inducing questions like 1) do vegans have carnal knowledge? 2) are vegans, generally, better looking than salad-dodgers? 3) do vegans appreciate threadcat? etc. general queries about vegetarianism are fine, as well.

i was raised vegetarian, so i've never known the other side. seven or so years ago, i attended a lecture by dr. neal barnard (zomg, he's tossing an apple! will he catch it?!? will he?!?):

http://www.nealbarnard.org/images/neal_apple.jpg

i was amazed to learn how harmful animal protein was to our bodies. it was shocking all of the diseases and medical conditions linked to meat-eating.

all of my life, i was under the impression that my diet was healthy, as a vegeatarian, but suddenly i realized that i wasn't doing much better than the steak & ribs crowd.

i decided to become vegan and haven't looked back since.

OK I have to ask. I know I could look it up but I would rather find out here. What is the difference between Vegan and Vegetarian??? I always assumed they were the same thing and just didn't care enough to look any further.

I would also ask "Why"?

vegetarians don't eat flesh, but still consume animal products, such as, milk, cheese, eggs, etc. vegans abstain from all animal products. basically, vegans are just stricter vegetarians.

typical daily diet?

breakfast: organic dried cereal with as much fruit as possible. generally, fresh banana, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and peaches/nectarines.

lunch: almost always leftovers from supper.

supper: a variety of steamed vegetables (squash, yams, potatoes, spinach) fresh mixed greens with tomatoes and then i prepare some sort of sauce which usually begins with sautéing onions and garlic in tomato and building it up from there.

no. a) i am not sure if he is vegan, though it would stand to reason b) vegan != peta.

i am vegan purely for health reasons. that isn't to say i support the practices of the meat industry, but that wasn't a factor in my decision.

I was not trying to imply that Vegan= Peta. It was two separate question however, google has helped me answer them.

Wiki

"Barnard is the partner of PETA president Ingrid Newkirk"

He is also on the list of notable people who practice (or practiced) veganism

the evidence suggests that a vegan/vegetarian diet will improve one's mental acuity. however, i haven't noticed a change in this regard since switching from vegetarianism to veganism. physically, though, i have observed a marked change. my body works better and i feel better.

i am in excellent shape. i play tennis/exercise regularly. i am extremely healthy. recent tests of my levels showed that i am essentially in the negative for measured health concerns. physically, being vegan does not cause any problems for me. on the contrary, it is only beneficial.

many people have the false impression that the vegetarian/vegan diet is unhealthy. they think it leads to anemia, etc. this misconception is the result of people going about the diet incorrectly. many people that become vegetarian do not understand the importance of a balanced diet and do not eat in a way that provides their bodies with the nutrients that it requires. too often, people just stop eating meat and do not actively ensure that they are eating properly.

the human body is a complex thing. we cannot do as the horses do and just eat hay.

Congrats, you may be the world's first not annoying vegan. I can understand the health factors much better than the "animal rights" claptrap.

Do you commonly experience

fatigue
lethargy

i am not a nazi about my veganism. if i am a guest at someone's home, i will try to eat what i am given. if i can avoid something i do, but i try to be polite.

restaurants are getting much better at offering options for us herbivores. i do my best to find something that fits my diet, but don't freak out or refuse to eat if i have to eat a little cheese. usually, a person can just ask the chef to leave the cheese out, etc. it's not really a problem for me.

What percentage of the time do you cook your own meals vs. eat out.

Are there any vegans who hate to cook and subsist on things like cereal and sandwiches?

Do you track your nutrition/caloric intake?

Any books or websites you'd recommend about menu planning, etc.?

eat to live by dr. joel fuhrman will provide you with a good foundation.

http://www.americanvegan.org/resourc...ive_longer.jpg

dr. neal barnard has written several books. some deal with specific concerns, such as diabetes, while others are more general, such as eat right, live longer.

anything connected to dr. hans diehl. he has some very comprehensive lectures, but i'm not sure where to get them.

dr. john mcdougall has some good literature and web resources.

dr. neil nedley has some interesting material relating to diet and the mind. this is more special interest stuff.

i'll think of more and add them later.

Next Monday, I am embarking on a diet to lose 30 lbs by Thanksgiving. People who tell me that's impossible or unhealthy have no idea how bad my intake is, from really unhealthy food all the time to lots of booze and beer.

That said, life is too short for me to eat the way you do, that just doesn't sound fun at all. I mean, I guess over the course of years I could get myself used to eating those sorts of things but yikes, not today. Good thread though, you are not annoying.
