A stranger is being shown around a village that he has just become part of. He is shown a well and his guide says "On any day except Wednesday, you can shout any question down that well and you'll be told the answer".

The man seems pretty impressed, and so he shouts down: Why not on Wednesday? and the voice from in the well shouts back: Because on Wednesday, it’s your day in the well.

Hi baronzeus. Thanks so much for going into The Well. I have some questions if you don't mind.

What does baronzeus mean? Are you the Stanford Welshing Pigeon? What is this?

How often do you play poker? What is the longest single session you have played?

I think I remember reading an old post that said you were currently playing TexasLimitKing. If you didn't, please disregard these questions. What limits did you play TLK? What was playing him like? How good do you think he was?

Who do you think are the best LHE players in the world? Online and live. Who are your poker idols?

Do crap players you encounter in high middle and high stakes games beat low middle and small stakes game?

What winrate do you believe is possible for big online and live games today? If a good online high stakes winner played a couple hundred K hands at 5/10 online, what do you think his winrate would be?

Do you think LHE is in any way a farce? Possibly in regard to results.

In HUHU games, what kinds of stats (VPIP, PFR, and AF) do gun high stakes players have?

WITHEG recommends default open-raising from the button with a certain 41% of hands (22+, A2s+, A3o+, K2s+, K9o+, Q5s+, Q9o+, J7s+, J9o+, T8s+, T8o+, 97s+, 98o+, 86s+, 75s+, 65s+) in full to 3 handed games. What do you think of this?

Have you read Mathematics of Poker? If so, what did you think of it? Did it improve your game?

What kind of coaching have you received during your poker career? How much did it help you succeed? How important do you think hiring a coach is to a poker player's development?

Many thanks for your time.

I've got another one.

Why are you still trying to play your HULA match? You've been trying for like 2 years now, isn't it about time to give up on that?

Thanks.

He is one of the better players on stars. As far as his HU game goes though, its not as refined as mine, since I play a lot more HU.

I basically game selected really well at party 3/6 and 5/10 and built a roll for 10/20. Then moved to absolute poker where 10/20 and 15/30 were the softest games on the net at the time. It's all really simple. Play in good games, win a lot

Both of these essentially mean nothing

[ QUOTE ]

How often do you play poker? What is the longest single session you have played?

[/ QUOTE ]
I play poker usually every day or possibly every other day. My sessions are pretty short, but sometimes I'm bored or stuck and want to play more. I think once i played for 8 hours.

[ QUOTE ]

I think I remember reading an old post that said you were currently playing TexasLimitKing. If you didn't, please disregard these questions. What limits did you play TLK? What was playing him like? How good do you think he was?

[/ QUOTE ]
I played 1k/2k and 500/1k with him. It mostly wasn't heads up, but I wasn't super impressed with his play. I didn't win much, probably broke even.

[ QUOTE ]

Who do you think are the best LHE players in the world? Online and live. Who are your poker idols?

[/ QUOTE ]
I think it's pretty well accepted that the best heads up players in the world are Joe Cassidy and Hoss_TBF. I also think Joe's ring games is one of the best in the world. Schneids also has a pretty solid ring game. Unassigned/Rearden metal also has one of the best heads up games IMO.

For myself, I think I'm somewhere in the top 10 in short handed or heads up games. My ring game isnt nearly as good bu tI'm working on it.

[ QUOTE ]

Do crap players you encounter in high middle and high stakes games beat low middle and small stakes game?

[/ QUOTE ]
Probably not, because of the much higher rake in low games.

[ QUOTE ]

What winrate do you believe is possible for big online and live games today? If a good online high stakes winner played a couple hundred K hands at 5/10 online, what do you think his winrate would be?

[/ QUOTE ]
I think 1.5BB/100 is relatively doable. His winrate at 5/10 would probably be very low, at least at first, since the games play so differently.

[ QUOTE ]
Do you think LHE is in any way a farce? Possibly in regard to results.

only half of the time

[ QUOTE ]

In HUHU games, what kinds of stats (VPIP, PFR, and AF) do gun high stakes players have?

most players have a vpip of 80 to 90 and an af of around 2. i personally have a vpip of 80 and an af of around 1.5

[/ QUOTE ]
I would raise with any of those hands on the button, in addition to A2, K8, K7, K6, Q8, Q7

The only coaching i got was from All1n. It happened to coincide with a huge upswing so it was probably a really good idea. Getting another's perspective on your play is really important

Another one. You've already stated the importance of game selection. What other aspects of strategy would you say an aspiring small stakes player needs to focus on to step up his game?

bz,

i said something similar to schneids when he was in the well - i have railed you sometimes in big games and read your posts and have really gained a lot of respect for you. i play low (perpetually, i fear) but it makes me proud to learn on 2p2 that people like you exist

i'm currently working on 1-1 NL SNGs. i used to play and really only think about 1-1 limit hold 'em and it remains my favorite game. is there any advice you have for improving? mostly i wonder about how to review my game and sessions. i know it's a really broad questions but before i took a break from limit after a quick 250 bb downer (i know that's not huge, especially for HU, but i was taking a prolonged shot so it was especially hard on my bankroll lol) i was having some trouble figuring out where my weaknesses were and also deciphering if i truly was just running bad or actually making some large mistakes.

any words of advice would be great, but mainly thanks for being a good poster and respectable product of the forum.

martin

p.s. your MHSH video was seriously funny

obviously the biggest thing is the number of good players. even the "fish" are decentand much less exploitable. however the rake is much lower so the games are just as "beatable" as the lower games.

baronzeus 10-07-2007 07:00 PM

Re: baronzeus is in \"the well\"

my advice is to just read a lot of posts here and really game select well to learn how to best exploit the fish. theres no way to come out of a downswing but to run well.

HOWMANY 10-07-2007 08:24 PM

Re: baronzeus is in \"the well\"

Why am I so bad HU/3 handed? I'm pretty sure I am a lifetime losing player 3 handed. HU I am a winner but only because I just play awful players.

Why am I such a bankroll nit that I won't even consider taking shots without like 300-500 bets depending on what it is? Do you have any advice on running very well when shot taking because every time I take a shot I just go busto, get frustrated and then play smaller for what seems like forever.

Tell me about seat selection in online games. Like I'm not retarded and understand what makes certain seats better, but are there times where there is a decent game that you won't even sit in because your position relative to everyone is really bad?

baronzeus 10-08-2007 04:27 PM

Re: baronzeus is in \"the well\"

HU/3 handed is all about hand reading and getting max value based on that information. Spend a few seconds and decide on what your opponent has, and THEN use that to decide what your best move is. Dont just raise mindlessly when you have a pair. Sometiems there are better ways of making money.

Being a bankroll nit is fine. I think the key thing is when taking shots is to be VERY careful as to what game you play in. If it's your first time in the game make sure you have a good seat at a good table. It's much more likely that you'll be successful if you do.

Seat selection can be weird. If you want to exploit someone for beign to loose and aggressive preflop, you need to sit in a seat that really puts him at a disadvantage. The best seat for that is usually on the left. If you are on his right, however, you need to be very careful what hands you are raising with, because you will be put in tons of tough spots throughout the game.

When someone is raising lightly and you have position on him, thats basically a green light to be reraising VERY lightly. Being in position is such an insane advantage that you can reraise with any hand you feel comfortable playing and try to isolate the guy.

With that, I'm closing up the well. Good luck at the tables everyone.
