i am an embarrassment

So after being burnt out for the past 6 months and barely playing, my life savings have finally dwindled to ~12k. I am posting this because hopefully this will help me have some accountability.

I have basically not played at all. I got complacent knowing I had enough money to live without working, and have consistently used the excuse that most people my age live paycheck to paycheck and have no savings.

I'm going to be 23 soon, and I think it's time for me to start busting my ass and making money. I've always said that I don't want to be a low limit grinder forever and that I want to play midstakes at the least.

I'm basically spending too much and not caring that I'm not playing enough to cover my monthly nut. Last month I spent probably like 3k total and barely played.

As I said earlier, I'm down to 12k. For whatever reason, I've finally realized that this situation and this laziness is unacceptable.

I am going to play 6 hours a day 4-6 tabling 200nl. I know playing 6-7 days a week is impossible, but I will not stand for less than 5. I am going to attempt to spend no more than my expenses and frugal entertainment costs. This will not be a blind play as many hands as possible marathon either. This is about making money, and I have to exert discipline and focus on playing optimally, even when I am running poorly.

I'm going to try to stay away from going out to party every weekend. Once in awhile is acceptable, but I have not worked hard enough in the past 6 months to justify the reward of relaxing by going out and partying at the end of the week. Instead, my non-poker activities will be spent constructively going to play basketball and tennis, which I enjoy immensely.

I'm not going to be upset by the inevitable sarcastic responses because I deserve the ridicule for letting my finances fall into such shambles. I brought it on myself because of my laziness. This situation is unacceptable for someone who is not a student and who supports himself solely through poker.

At the end of this month, hopefully I will have good results to report back to BBV. There will be no letup thereafter either. I don't want to be a bum.

i've worked out a pretty good system playing halo 3 and one tabling 2/4 switching when i die or win a big pot. call it cross disciplinary enlightenment or what you will but i never get bored and never have to exercise patience. i plan on doing this until i'm rich and above the law. pm me for details.

1-2 is ridiculously boring- which leads to playing bad.. 4-6 sounds good and easily doable full time.

I am the same way. I only covered my monthly nut for the last 2 out of 7 months. I only have a crappy associates degree. And while I am down to 15k instead of 12k I am also 4 years older than you and I only play 100 NL.

But if you've ever had as many real jobs as I've had you would be thanking your lucky stars just to be able to simply go to sleep and wake up whenever you feel like it.

nation 10-01-2007 06:25 AM

Re: i am an embarrassment

trust me, i've enjoyed that feeling a lot, and that's partially why i'm such a lazy piece of crap. i've been acting like i have no responsibility.

one of my plans to help myself is to go to sleep and wake up at decent hours. it won't be optimal playing times but it will help me get things out of the way early like working out and whatnot instead of waking up late and having no time to run errands. having a flexible semi-schedule should help me out a lot.

Do you plan in advance with your roll. I have been thinking about how i would pay myself for rent and such for a living. I would feel uneasy if i didnt have everything paid for 2 months ahead.

I'm not playing enough hours either. Fortunately I'm retired so I don't have to make my nut, but I feel I should play more. Maybe I should get TiVo, so I don't have an excuse not to play just because MMA or whatever is on TV.

A real job is one which you can earn a living wage off of that can sustain a family. Not that job working in the bakery at Panera or stocking groceries or delivering pizzas or working at the theatre or whatever other of these "real jobs" you talk about that can get you by week to week. Thats not a "real job" thats called a grind.

If you actually mean "real jobs" like an ASP developer or draft engineer or something that can actually turn into a real career, then well, I apologize. But don't try to make it sound like you can't get anywhere with just a "crappy associates". I make 50+ a year with "just a crappy associates" - and I'm underpaid for what I do.

you know i have a "real job" working 40 hours a week and i basically do jack [censored] all day. i wear torn jeans to work, get to keep my piercings in, i sit at a desk posting on 2p2 and get a 500$ paycheck a week.

then i play 50nl for a few hours and take 1k profit a month (easily done) and stash it into my ING mutual fund account.

i figure in 10 years or so i can probably move down to a part time job, then in another 10 years retire.

by not having an interest bearing account (i dunno if u do or not, but i have 3) in a few years time ur going to be kicking yourself when u realize how much $ you've lost out on in compounding interest. it's pretty phenominal stuff.

edit: just wanted to make a point that in the morning if ur not playing you can still sit around and STILL get paid for it.

LOL @ being too lazy to play online poker. WOW.

You're too lazy to walk to your computer chair and click a mouse?? NL200 is too mentally exhausting?

I mean it's one thing to say you don't like online poker as justification for not playing, but laziness makes no sense to me as a reason.

Yeah really. Way back in 2003 when I was 23 I thought Chris Moneymaker was the best player in the world. I played $5 SNGs on Paradise and worked at FedEx. And now look at me, I play 100 NL for a living!

I'm sure there are a number of people like that and in some ways I'm jealous. Though I'd probably get way bored not being engaged with something I like doing, even if it was an easy $2k a month. There comes a time when if you don't enjoy what you're doing, you're not living.

I took offense at the "crappy associates degree" comment basically.

Re: i am an embarrassment

nation, sorry but none of this sounds like a good idea. You've got what...6 months living expenses in the bank and you're burnt out from poker and the solution is to play an insane amount of poker? That just sounds like a recipe for disaster.

So let's say you make your monthly nut from doing this...now what? Are you going to do it again? You're burntout from poker, the solution should not be more poker.

If you really are burntout and worried about money, get a job (seriously), a real job with career prospects and take some real time off poker. Then gradually reintroduce it by playing parttime and if you still love it go pro again in a year or two.

It is mentally exhausting to play your A-game at poker for more than a few hours at a time and I don't know any pro playing more than 30 hrs a week.

Multitabling Poker takes 10X the mental concentration in a given hour than a typical desk job.

how about trying out a different form of poker? HUsngs are a great way to build a roll and you actually get to play poker as well.
