brag: custom tailored suit

I'm not posting this in OOT 'cause they're gay.

Want to get a 100% cashmere suit in Bangkok. Thinking it should run ~ $500USD for a top tailor and fabric (sound about right?)

I've never really done this before and would like some tips. I know to try burning the fabric to make sure its natural but some tips on measurements, ways to make sure the tailor knows what he is doing before paying, etc...

Thinking of maybe buying the shirt and pants 1st and if they are good quality buying the jacket.

What sort of cut would you suggest (I don't have a job and don't think I will ever get one, but would like something to wear to formal occasions/just to look nice).

I went to another forum and they recommended me a place since I know there a lot of scams in this area.

avoid Indian tailors at all costs and you should be fine.

Brag: got 2 silk suits in Thailand for about $225
Beat: didn't listen to Dad's advice about avoiding Indian tailors
Variance: button fell off suit last week

Tell them you want it to be fully canvassed / a fully floating canvass. This has to do with the construction of the jacket. Specify no fusing (fusing is when they use glue to attach the inner chest piece). This makes for a way higher quality garment.

2 button, single breasted. Resist the urge to get a bunch of buttons. Stick with a notch lapel - peak lapels look cool, but can look awful depending on the tailor's talent level. Flat front pants. Make sure you get at least 3 fittings... most important part of a suit is the shoulders. The shoulders HAVE to fit.

BTW, I would not go for cashmere - I'd probably get a tropical weight wool (guessing Thailand doesn't get too cold?). Steer clear of the Super 150's and up - no durability. Cashmere is not an incredibly durable fabric either, and the average tailor is not going to do a great job with it. The more substantial fabric, the easier it is to work with.

Hmm. I'll post some more things when I think of them. Oh, and as for buying the suit and pants separately, don't bother. You're going to have to buy all the fabric up front anyway. See if the tailor has fabric books so you can order a high quality fabric. This should be the most expensive part of a suit in Asia (most likely). Holland & Sherry makes great fabrics.

You want the pants and the jacket built together, especially since it should be out of the same fabric.

The shirt you can have done first and you can even wear it for the fitting. Skimming it seems drooom has the right idea. I'd also suggest that the jacket cuffs cover the shirt cuffs rather than showing any shirt.

Bangkok, online poker for a living, I'd be scared as hell to buy a suit on Koh samui...

ended up going to

http://www.dress-for-success.com/

Cashmere wool (imported from England) Jacket+pants+tie+shirt for $380.

His shop had pics of him shaking hands with George Bush Sr+Jr and tons of other diplomats/impirtant people and the place was packed with people who seemed pretty upper class. We will see how his work is I guess.

He said fully floating canvas is standard for all his suits. Asked for a 2button single brested suit.
