Protein Shakes and Fat burning?

Hey guys, I just wanted to know whats the deal with drinking protein shakes and burning fat. Brands like muscle milk are advertising that they are using "designer lipids" which aid in "fat burning" but does anyone have any evidence for or against this statement?

I am around 25-30 pounds overweight, and pretty much want to lose a good deal of fat, while building up muscle mass. I have been going to the gym 3 times a week, doing some lifting and light cardio. I was wondering if drinking protein shakes is beneficial or detrimental to my goals. By looking at the nutrition information, it seems like they are laden with fat (20-30% of RDV per shake), and worst of all saturated fats (10-20% of RDV). If they really aren't going to help me, i was wondering what sort of diet would be best.

Thanks in advance.

No idea about the protein shakes, but you don't need them. Read the FAQ, get on a healthy diet with lots of quality proteins and vegetables.

A Zone diet is an excellent one to follow.

get Optimum Nutrition 100% whey protein powder. Have a shake within 40 min of working out and in between meals. Also do a heavier cardio on off days of weight training instead. Also make sure your on a solid program like 5X5 or something.

Don't take Muscle Milk, their claims are bogus and since each shake has so many calories it isn't going to help you drop body fat. You need to create a caloric deficit by dieting and exercising.

That said, ON 100% Whey or Dymatize Elite whey are both very good choices for shakes to take post-workout and will help your muscles repair themselves after you train.

if you don't get enough protein in your regular diet, supplement with whey. And always get some sort of post-workout nutrition. Drink a protein shake and get some simple sugars. Combine that with a healthy diet and you'll reach your medium term goals easily.

if your concern is losing weight, it's not the fat you should be worried about. you should be more concerned with simple carbs (sugar, starches from white bread, etc.) and running a calorie deficit. Fat does not make you fat, calories do.

The gnc “grand slam” has more protein than the muscle milk w/ less carbs/sugar and fewer calories.

Most of the claims are total BS, but there is a little bit of merit behind the idea of protein causing fat loss. Stick with Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Whey products after workouts and in the mornings.

Dymatize Elite whey has 1/6th the amount of cholesterol per serving, which is a standard indicator of the quality/purity of the protein. I used ON for a long time(6 years) and have recently switched over to Dymatize. Mixes better, more flavors, better protein, same price.

Thats really weird, I mix mine with a spoon in a glass and its perfect. In shaker bottle it is like drinking chocolate milk.

ps. the chocolate mint flavor tastes like girl scout cookies thin mints. A++++++

Re: Protein Shakes and Fat burning?

cool thx for the advice, i just ordered 5lb of ON 100% whey.

so is the consensus that i should just drink one scoop in the morning and one scoop after workouts? or should i be drinking more like 5 scoops over the entire day?

Re: Protein Shakes and Fat burning?

Depends on the rest of your diet. Start by doing 2 scoops after your workout and see how you do on that. No need to go nuts with protein powders if you don't eat right to begin with.

Whats your diet like?

Having a glass of choc milk w/sweetarts might actually be better PWO than a straight protein shake. For PWO you'll want a malto/dextrose in your drink.

i've been trying to eat a lot of fruits and veggies. Cherry tomatoes are awesome, u just wash them in the container they come in and make a great snack. I've also been eating a lot of cold cuts like turkey, 98% fat free ham, and low fat cheese. Usually i make a sandwich out of them with whole wheat bread and mustard. ermm wut else..... i try to drink a lot of water. occasionally (once a weekish) i have a burrito bol from chipotle. chicken, rice, pinto beans, green and corn salsa, lettuce and cheese.

I have a feeling i'm gunna get tired of this type of food after a few more weeks. I love food and really enjoy variety. If anyone has good healthy recipes for a college student with only access to a microwave, i'd greatly appreciate it.

eat some oatmeal dude...the quaker lean ones with extra protein have many yummy flavors--maple & brown sugar, bannana bread, cinnamon---without much sugar

easy to make in a microwave

Chocolate milk and sweet tarts? What the crap? Milk --> lactose. Lactose replenishes glycogen, to be sure, but not muscle glycogen...you know that.

Gatorade powder is dextrose and maltodextrin, or you can use oatmeal if you prefer complex carbs post-workout. I've seen convincing arguments for both sides and it all comes down to your body type and what you respond best to.

Lactose is terrible for you overall...causes subcutaneous fat to be stored giving you a puffy, soft look. I agree with you that you need carbs post-workout but suggesting chocolate milk and sweet tarts is just ridiculous.

Source? I've heard nothing but good things about cottage cheese and plain yogurt

Re: Protein Shakes and Fat burning?

Bodybuilders have avoided milk since the 70's. Some respond worse to it than others.

Cottage cheese and yogurt are fantastic. Look at the label of your cottage cheese though. 4 grams of carbs, 13 grams of protein per serving. In milk there is a much higher amount of lactose(which is a sugar, lets not forget).

You're fine if you have milk with your cereal in the morning or use it to make a shake at night. Just remember that water should be your main source of fluid and that you shouldn't rely on milk to fill that void. Moderation ftw.
