Two tipping scenarios that have been bugging me
1. Mr. Chinese food delivery man. There is no minimum $ order or delivery charge as far as i can tell from the menu. However, I order an $8 dish and it comes and the bill says $11. It is freaking good, so I order it again. It is a different price, something like $12. I don't really mind paying this much, and i don't want to hassle over the price because they really barely speak english. am i required to tip? i haven't and part of me feels bad, but i think paying $15 for random delivery dinner would make me feel worse.
2. Mr. Italian food man. I call in an order and come by and pick it up. I never do this so i don't know protocol. There is a tip line on the receipt, which isn't suprising b/c it is a restaurant, but i don't tip b/c i figure i am the one who delivered it to myself. Correct? |
Re: Two tipping scenarios that have been bugging me
yay a tipping thread!
1. Tip the guy, he delivered your food, if you dont wanna pay $14 then dont have it delivered 2. No, there is no reason to tip |
Re: Two tipping scenarios that have been bugging me
all delivery men forget how to speak english real quick when you start asking why you're getting ripped off, or why it took an hour and a half to get your food. i would pay him, then call the place and ask why the f you are paying more and more for the same dish. if you don't get a good answer (or a free meal) take your business elsewhere.
regarding the 2nd one, very few people tip on pickup orders at restaurants. i usually pay cash and at least tip any change i get, because i used to work in a kitchen, but it's not egregiously bad not to tip. |

[/ QUOTE ] How can you expect to have food delivered and not tip? You should be giving him 15$, though if you order from there again the driver will certainly take his sweet time. Even if he is an hour and a half late, you should give 20$ and apologize if you want food from there again. |

Yes, it is quite the privilege to be able to order delivery from a restaurant. OP - don't worry about tipping if you pick up the food. Let me make sure I understand the first scenario. You ordered delivery and assumed (because the menu didn't otherwise state) that there was no charge for delivery? In reality there was a charge for deliver (ldo) so you didn't tip? This is wrong. Always get a total over the phone when you order delivery. Difference in price is sometimes lunch vs dinner pricing even if meal is exactly the same. |
Re: Two tipping scenarios that have been bugging me
Always tip a delivery person. Never [censored] with people who handle your food.

Re: Two tipping scenarios that have been bugging me
how the [censored] does he find your house if he doesnt speak english?
|
Re: Two tipping scenarios that have been bugging me
1. This is not difficult. When you call in your order, ask the price.
2. How long are you going to wait for someone to suck your [censored]? |
Re: Two tipping scenarios that have been bugging me
I don't tip; don't believe in it

Re: Two tipping scenarios that have been bugging me
Sorry to hijack, but this gives me an excuse to ask a tipping question that probably came up in talking with a friend.
You goto a bar. Your friend is bartending. If he was not there, the total bill should have been something like $40 + tip. He charges you for only a few drinks - and the bill comes out to $15. What is your tip for him? My friend argued that we should go with option B, essentially giving our friend all the money that we saved instead of the bar. This seemed silly to me though, because I am then getting 0 hookup, and might as well use any bartender. |

Usually works out well and you'll get hooked up again. |

Re: Two tipping scenarios that have been bugging me
If there's a mystery overcharge on a delivery order, it's usually a delivery charge. I wouldn't tip in addition to a delivery charge.

how the [censored] does he find your house if he doesnt speak english? [/ QUOTE ] my point is that he does speak english, he just 'forgets' when you start asking him difficult questions. this happens to me all the time. but someone who doesn't speak english can be trained pretty quickly to read addresses or find buildings, especially if it's in a neighborhood he knows. you only need to know about a 20 block radius in most cities, maybe a little more. z28, in answer to your question, you give the guy enough that he gets a sizeable extra tip, but not so much that you don't save any money. if he's just a casual friend or a cool bartender and not someone who you know well and get this treatment from all the time, tip a little more. so i would probably leave 35 bucks or so. being friendly, appreciative and fun to have around is always a good compliment to a big tip when you are getting hooked up (or if you want to start getting hooked up in the future). especially if the bartender makes a lot of money anyway. if you get in the habit of tipping an absurd amount it has a way of escalating and just becomes weird after a while. most bartenders i know give free drinks because they like someone and can get away with it. the added money is nice, and it varies by the person, but i would say most of the time if a friend is hooking you up, he is not overly concerned with getting a huge tip. so my main concern is not to make him feel like i'm bribing him and expecting to get hooked up every time i walk in the door. |

I tip well, and he gets me the food quick, and lately, there's been extra food in the bag. Well worth not being nitty over an extra dollar or two. |
Re: Two tipping scenarios that have been bugging me
Go with option 2 , since your friend is a thief and will eventually be fired.

What is your tip for him? [/ QUOTE ] I used to bartend and still go to places where I get hooked up by the bartenders. It is standard practice to tip the money that you would have paid for the drinks you were hooked up with, but no 20% on top of that is necessary. So, if your tab would have been $40 and he only charged you $15, just give him $25 on top of that to make it $40 total. Oh yeah, and Mr. Pink's diatribe about not tipping usually puts me on life tilt, esp. since it was only a dollar. |

In terms of relative difference, the friend would have normally made $8 (so he's +$17), and getting a WAY better deal than I am. Saving just the tip is almost negligible, and makes the hookup hardly worth it for me to go out of my way. Maybe I'm just a cheap bastard? (FWIW, I actually do tip the full price - tip, but think it's unreasonable). |

[/ QUOTE ] I see your point, although I said give your friend $40 total so he would be making $25, minus what he has to tip out to busboys/barbacks or share with other bartenders. What also must be taken into consideration is the fact that giving away free alcohol is against the law (in my state anyway) and most likely against the policy of the establishment and can in some cases be grounds for termination if the boss found out. So its kind of like hazardous duty pay, but not really. I agree though, the whole hooking up drinks thing is only marginally worth the effort for both parties, if at all. |
Re: Two tipping scenarios that have been bugging me
So, what's the proper tip for where I nut on the hooker? Should there be varying tip values for stomach, face, breasts, ass, in mouth?
Would appreciate best tipping advice ASAP! Ray |

z, bryan:
"It is standard practice to tip the money that you would have paid for the drinks you were hooked up with" I've been part of this type of "arrangement" at dozens of places where I either know staff or am a regular, and it's not standard at any of them to pay for all the drinks you were given for free. The general rule of thumb in this situation everyone I know uses is to tip about half of what you got for free. In this case, $30-35 is the right range to leave. |

Re: Two tipping scenarios that have been bugging me
El D,
That's the way I handle it, too (although this happens to me at a "handful" of places, not necessarily "dozens.") However, I do think that it is standard for other industry folks to overtip in these situations, so since Bryan is himself a bartender, it doesn't surprise me that he thinks it's standard to tip the total price of the comped hooch. -McGee |

($15 tab, should have been $40). I'm with El D on taking the middle ground - around 30-35 total ($20 tip). This was reflected in my 3rd poll choice. |

And yes, having been a member of the food/beverage service industry workforce, I can tell you that hooking up your friends with beers and getting overtipped will offset the douchebag Mr. Pinks of the week. The difference between El D's tipping philosophy and my own is not very great. |

Re: Two tipping scenarios that have been bugging me
Whenever I get anything comped, I tip as if it wasn't comped. So in the example above, I would tip $8 (20% of $40). Pretty crazy to tip $25 on $15 if you ask me.
|
Re: Two tipping scenarios that have been bugging me
The Mr. Pink gimmick is amazing, by the way.
I don't like how tipping is mandatory now. Two examples, one I was an idiot, the other I wasn't. I've been ordering from the same pizza place for...maybe 8 years now, it's a Greek place, I'm Greek, we're all very friendly. And this past year they got a new delivery guy, not Greek, not that it matters, and the pizza is $12, I hand him a $20 and he says, "do you want change?" At this point, my natural instict is take the pizza box and smash his head through it, hoping the hot cheese burns his face until its completly deformed...But I resist. The second instance was my fault. I ordered chinese food, and they didn't tell me how much it was on the phone, and I forgot to ask, but I only had $30 on me. They took a long time to get it to me, and it cost like $29.50. I handed him the $30 and closed the door, and, haha, he banged on the door and started cursing in Chinese. I nearly fell over laughing...I mean, I regularly order from this place, maybe once or twice a week. If I don't have the $$ on me to tip, I'll give him extra the next time he comes, no need to go into a tantrum. Obviously, I never ordered from them again out of fear of having my rice with soy sauce being in reality rice with jizz sauce. |

Re: Two tipping scenarios that have been bugging me
Matt,
Yeah, > 24. A handful of places in other cities, but tons of places in SF due to bartenders and bar managers moving around a lot, plus certain guys owning or investing in lots of different places. The service industry is a very tight community where everyone knows each other, so it's not unusual for people to have this type of arrangement at pretty much every place their social circle frequents. |
Re: Two tipping scenarios that have been bugging me
Drew,
"Whenever I get anything comped, I tip as if it wasn't comped." As a few have said, industry people or people w/ friends in the industry overtip as a rule. So maybe you don't want to tip as much as them, fine. But even if you're not, it seems like common courtesy to leave a little extra as a thank you if someone gave you something for free. |
