MTT\'ers... what is your edge?
Let me preface this by saying this is *sort of* a strategy post, but since it's such a general subject about MTT's in general - I thought it fit in MTTc better. Obviously a mod may move this if they see fit.
I have been playing MTTs with some seriousness for a few months now. Despite good results, I still find myself wondering what exactly makes me better than most of the players in the field (if anything at all). As far as the question I'm trying to propose for this thread, here goes: What makes you better than most of your MTT opponents? The obvious answers would be "experience, understanding, discipline, ect..." but I'm asking on a more specific level. Some things that come to mind are [aggression, correct pushbotting strategies, employment of +EV moves, exploiting bubbles, attentiveness of playing styles]. I'm mostly interested in responses from mid-to-high stakes MTT'ers who feel they have a distinct edge over the opposition. Small-stakes players are of course welcome to reply, but I think it's fairly obvious that there are massive edges due to a majority of the field simply lacking basic poker understanding. So if you can think of even one or two 'specific edges' you have over the competition, please express what they are (along with the level of buy-in you play). (I'm mostly asking this quesiton because I find it difficult to play multiple tables while playing well) |

Re: MTT\'ers... what is your edge?
We don't make incorrect preflop calls with hands where we're only proceeding if I make a certain hand.
We don't bloat pots with one pair hands unless we're willing to put all the money in. We find spots to get chips, not use our cards to get chips. We run really really good. |
Re: MTT\'ers... what is your edge?
are you talking about what makes you better than the other players in the field who are beating the field, or the field as a whole?
|
Re: MTT\'ers... what is your edge?
A product of making less mistakes than others and exploiting bad players better than others.

Re: MTT\'ers... what is your edge?
Everyone else sucks, seriously... I just got into playing a ton of MTT's and even most of the good/ranked players suck...
|
Re: MTT\'ers... what is your edge?
When I play on Absolute I can see everyone's cards. That usually helps a little.

Re: MTT\'ers... what is your edge?
I have a "go big or go home" attitude. Everyone remembers Babe as the home run KING, but what many people do not know is that along with the home run record, Babe also held the record for most strikeouts!

Obviously you don't have to be the #1 player in the field to be a winner ('cept HU) [ QUOTE ] For a concise explanation thats spot on, i merely suck less than most others. [/ QUOTE ] At what point does it require more than simply "not sucking"? Does it require more than not sucking to be profitable in the Super Tuesday or Stars 109r? When I only play 1 tournament, I'm able to quickly and accurately gather reads, enabling me to make better decisions. Yet when I'm playing 4-6 tournys at once, I still make what should be considered "good" decisions. Also, when I play 1 tournament I find it easy to pick spots to make moves when neccessary (such as who to resteal on) regardless of my cards. But when I play several, I am simply lost and w/o reads, and probably just auto-fold in these potentially profitable spots. |

I don't play a lot of MTT's, but I figured the most important thing is a chip stack.
Instead of playing your cards, play your chip stack. You might think villain is bluffing, but you can't call because if you are wrong, you are out for example. |

Re: MTT\'ers... what is your edge?
What do most players in, say, the daily 100k on stars understand about poker? I assume that almost all of them have a reasonable understanding about PF hand strengths, will make positional considerations, pushbotting strategies, understand the different between a steal/value raise. That a lot of them understand the concept and math behind resteals. They realize the power of aggression and use it to at least some extent. They will pick up on obvious abusing of their blinds, and other easy 'reads'.
Does this sound reasonable or am I giving them too much credit? |

too much credit
half the field probably needs help getting dressed in the morning |

Re: MTT\'ers... what is your edge?
I think it's a combination of having good buds, a working volcano, and easy accessibility to the grinder after a bad beat so that you forget about the hand within 2 minutes instead of tilting out.

Re: MTT\'ers... what is your edge?
most of the field in any tournament simply sucks... they make bad decision pf,flop, turn, and river.
