is the world flat? ...seriously is it?
i don't normally post, but there are people who are walking amongst us who have the ability to vote and it is disturbing.
boing boing.net - sheri shephard of "the view" The View co-host Sherri Shephard told her other co-hosts that she does not believe in the theory of evolution. Whoopi Goldberg then asked her if she thought the world was flat. Here's the transcript of the conversation that followed. WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Is the world flat? SHERRI SHEPHERD: Is the world flat? (laughter) GOLDBERG: Yes. SHEPHERD: …I Don’t know. GOLDBERG: What do you think? SHEPHERD: I… I never thought about it, Whoopi. Is the world flat? I never thought about it. BARBARA WALTERS: You’ve never thought about whether the world was round or flat? SHEPHERD: I tell you what I’ve thought about. How I’m going to feed my child– WALTERS: Well you can do both. SHEPERD: …how I’m going to take care of my family. The world, is the world flat has never entered into, like that has not been an important thing to me. ELIZABETH HASSELBECK: You’ll teach your son, Jeffery, right? SHEPHERD: If my son, Jeffery, asks me ‘is the world flat,’ I guess I would go… JOY BEHAR: You know, didn’t some person already work this question out? I mean, why are we doing this again? (laughter, applause) |

It's pretty nuts that she doesn't know, but she brings up a good point. Knowing whether the world is flat or round is a useless fact and unnecessary in everyday life. |

well she felt that it would take too much mental energy from her childrearing that she couldn't dedicate any time to it. omfg

SHEPHERD: I tell you what I’ve thought about. [/ QUOTE ] At this point, I was thinking, "If she says 'keeping it real', I'm going to stop reading." [ QUOTE ] How I’m going to feed my child... [/ QUOTE ] Close enough. And before the racism accusations start flying my way, I never heard of Sheri Shephard, and had no idea if race--or more importantly, CULTURE--were a part of this equation. |

Like knowing where milk comes from or what stars are. These are pointless facts we don't need to know or teach our children. |
Re: is the world flat? ...seriously is it?
I think Whoopi Goldberg demonstrated tremendous restraint with Sherri Sheppard and Barbara Walters. You know she wanted to lay a giant WTF?!? on Walters at the end with the whole "internets" and "babies with sperm" blather.

Re: is the world flat? ...seriously is it?
Whoopi doesn't belong on that show.
|
Re: is the world flat? ...seriously is it?
She probably doesn't realize this but being educated can help you do a better job raising your child. For example, it's hard to make good money in this world if you're more ignorant than a 15th century 10 year old.
|
Re: is the world flat? ...seriously is it?
Whoopi's idiotic argument definitely gets overshadowed here. Shocking.

"If your son asks you if the world is flat what do you say?"
"I say baby we've got to go to the library" I 100% guarentee this woman has seen a globe before and therefore I pronounce that she is mentally deficient. |
Re: is the world flat? ...seriously is it?
it is important to know if world is flat or not, just like it's important to know how to find canada, japan, australia on a map...it's helpful to have some basic knowledge about the planet we live on...
|
Re: is the world flat? ...seriously is it?
this is why the bible is so good. you can get all your answers from one book instead of reading all those other books at a library.

For example, it's hard to make good money in this world if you're more ignorant than a 15th century 10 year old. [/ QUOTE ] My guess is that the majority of 10 year olds living in the 15th century (1401-1500), would generally not know that the world was round. The majority of children at that time had no formal education and a large number of adults believed that the world was flat. However, I am not aware of any scientificly valid survey that was conducted on this subject at any time during the relevant time period. I agree that it is a good idea to know facts that may not be extremely relevant to your daily life. However, we see enough examples of people who do not bother to learn facts that are very relevant to their daily activities, that I cannot get too upset with someone who chooses not to focus on information which they believe to be non-useful. For example, it would be nice for: An internet message board poster to learn the spelling of common words such as ridiculous, lose / loose (these are 2 different words), etc; A poker player to understand that the likelihood of an outcome is not dependent on what happened last hand (assuming a fair and adequate shuffle has occurred); A blackjack player to learn the underlying principles and basic strategy for the game they are playing. These are examples where people are routinely ignorant of information that is very relevant to their activities. I find this much more disturbing than someone who does not know the shape of the planet that we live on. |

I find this much more disturbing than someone who does not know the shape of the planet that we live on. [/ QUOTE ] This is just silly. It is a fundamental point relating to the reality around us. We look at the sun and feel its heat, we see the stars and wonder what they are. Night and day come and go like clockwork. In this modern world, not asking enough questions about your this personal reality to find out that the world is a sphere is seriously poor. That is without even mentioning the fact that this woman will most certainly have seen a globe at some point in her life. |
Re: is the world flat? ...seriously is it?
LOL @ you "round earthers".
Like it's very probable that the earth is a round rock floating around space on its own volition. Pray tell, what exactly is the earth using for propulsion? Is there some kind of magic rocket-engine hidden in the planet's core that makes it maintain its constant speed in rotation around the sun? And how is it able to steer around the sun in a perfect elliptical orbit, year after year after year? You'd think that it'd [censored] up once in a million years or so and land us in a neighboring solar system. And seriously. Have any of you ever tried to place some grains of sand on a bathing ball? What happens to the grains on the outer periphery of the top? That's right, they fall to the ground! And now, what happens when you push the ball? The few grains of sand left on the top will ALSO fall off! So tell me this: How is it possible that there are any movable objects left on earth if it's round and rotating? That's right, it's IMPOSSIBLE. You guys crack me up. |
Re: is the world flat? ...seriously is it?
Little known fact, but since ancient times men of learning knew the earth was a sphere (or at least not flat) - in fact the ancient greeks not only knew it, they actually measured the earth pretty accurately using mathematical extrapolation.

Re: is the world flat? ...seriously is it?
From "A Study in Scarlet":
[ QUOTE ] His (Sherlock Holmes) ignorance was as remarkable as his knowledge. Of contemporary literature, philosophy and politics he appeared to know next to nothing. Upon my quoting Thomas Carlyle, he inquired in the naivest way who he might be and what he had done. My surprise reached a climax, however, when I found incidentally that he was ignorant of the Copernican Theory and of the composition of the Solar System. That any civilized human being in this nineteenth century should not be aware that the earth travelled round the sun appeared to be to me such an extraordinary fact that I could hardly realize it. "You appear to be astonished," he said, smiling at my expression of surprise. "Now that I do know it I shall do my best to forget it." "To forget it!" "You see," he explained, "I consider that a man's brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose. A fool takes in all the lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or at best is jumbled up with a lot of other things so that he has a difficulty in laying his hands upon it. Now the skilful workman is very careful indeed as to what he takes into his brain-attic. He will have nothing but the tools which may help him in doing his work, but of these he has a large assortment, and all in the most perfect order. It is a mistake to think that that little room has elastic walls and can distend to any extent. Depend upon it there comes a time when for every addition of knowledge you forget something that you knew before. It is of the highest importance, therefore, not to have useless facts elbowing out the useful ones." "But the Solar System!" I protested. "What the deuce is it to me?" he interrupted impatiently; "you say that we go round the sun. If we went round the moon it would not make a pennyworth of difference to me or to my work." [/ QUOTE ] |
