Conversation with David Grey about PLO

to summarise my brief chat he said that PLO is often not a game worth playing..even if you're an expert..because of the huge pots where you would play either hand if you had it...I just know I have yet to figure out how to win in this game myself...so I ask..do you think it is worth the time to get good at a game that isnt worth playing even if you;re an expert? Of course that is David Grey's opinion..what is yours?

I have no idea who David Grey is but he sounds like he isn't a winner at Omaha.

It's a deliberately provocative post made to get attention and annoy people for no reason.

My comment was made sarcastically because to me, this David Grey fellow clearly hasn't got a clue about Omaha.

Re: Conversation with David Grey about PLO

Simple answer: any game where you can find bad players who don't know what they're doing is worth playing. PLO qualifies in spades, no matter how much variance it may have.

Grey's comment basically says that PLO variance is very high, but this has less to do with whether or not it's worth playing than what stakes you should be playing at.

I think this is the guy who told me at the WSOP that he preferred 579J to 789T, because there are more ways to fill the gaps.

579J can flop 14-out straight draws and 789T can't.

Flop comes 68J, 789T makes a 17 card straight draw.

Maybe David Grey said this because at the level he is playing there aren't as many fish who will call with second nuts.

But he isn't playing at any level for Omaha, he said that himself.

Re: Conversation with David Grey about PLO

I think his opinions are as they is because he is generally extremely nitty in every game he plays and I don't think he is the kind of player who could make a largish score in a game unless he makes a lot of hands. ie. he doesn't bluff nearly enough. And for his nut-peddling style his comments are quite right because money does go in 60/40 a lot of the time in omaha.
But then again he isn't an expert in omaha so he can't really say what an expert in omaha would or should do. LAG > TAG in deep stacked omaha no question about it.

he actually did make a comment that he was in fact an expert at the game

Okay so slightly off topic... I had heard of David Grey before but didn't really know anything about him, so I looked him up and he is UGLY ! LOL sorry just had to say it.

If his main point is that experts at PLO have very little edge against each other then this is a pretty moot point since you could say this about any game.

Re: Conversation with David Grey about PLO

PLO at the highest levels, the nosebleed stakes, seems like at the very least an extremely high variance game. 95% of the time when you get it in it seems to be a coinflip: nuts vs. 14 out draw

as far as I can tell it is usually a coinflip of overpair and gutshot versus middle pair and three live kickers and a backdoor flush draw.
