Poker After Dark thread (Week of 9/17 - Poker At Its Best)

Now there's actually a thread on 2+2 to talk about this week's shows, featuring:

Gus Hansen
Daniel Negreanu
Tuan Le
Howard Lederer
Erick Lindgren
Michael Mizrachi

I liked this episode with the banter and half the ep was spent making fun of hellmuth...

Also hearing Negreanu complain about the same tournament rule on both shows the same day was funny..

I think Negreanu commented in his blog after taping the show about how much fun he had at the table.

Tuan or Mizrachi will definitely bust first... they don't understand the format, can't slow down, and can't fold

I like watching Gus, but his incessant yawning is putting me to sleep. Too bad they weren't filming the game at the Bellagio the night before which kept him up - sounds like that would've been interesting.

Pretty funny they kept giving him crap because he "got bent over" at the Bellagio the night before.

Mizrachi also looks tired. He was my pick to win but as soon as I saw the way he was sitting and acting I regretted making that choice.

So my gf and I are watching PAD on dvr and out of the blue Hanson says something like if he makes this call the people at 2+2 will be on him and she looks at me and says "hey, that's you!"

I was so proud I had to wipe away a tear.

I wish the grinder would stop crunching ice while in hand with Lindgren. Everything got quiet then crunch crunch crunch sounded like mic was placed on a tooth lol!!

incessant chatter

can they focus on the game or must the other players just chatter away endlessly while a player is trying to make a decision. it's as if they have little interest and focus in the game. much different from last week when hellmuth and brunson are totally focused and you dont hear this pointless chatter that is constantly going on.

all i hear when lederer opens his mouth is blah, blah, blah. man, he puts me to sleep. maybe my hearing is going bad. but he and the rest don't seem to be taking the game too seriously as they continue to have their roundtable coffe discussion going on.

please shhhhhhhhhhhh! no talking in the poker room allowed when $100,000 is at stake. you all can blabber afterwards at daniel's house while you are all playing the wii. please, just get back to poker. that's why i tune in.

Tuan Bet

They kept talking about the basketball bet with Tuan. Sounded like it was with Antwan Jamison. Sounded very interesting. Does anyone know if it really happened?

Re: Tuan Bet

maybe antoine walker from the heat, they did say he doesnt play defense and can make a ton of 3s in PRACTICE.

Re: Poker After Dark thread (Week of 9/17 - Poker At Its Best)

really curious about the tuan b-ball vet. Its not Jamison or walker because tuan said he wasnt that strong and only benched 225, both those guys are strong. He also said he was 6'9 and eric said he is one of the toughest defenders in the leauge but cant shoot free throws. Any guess? ps whoever it is that is a horrible bet for tuan. I played low DI college ball and would probaly take that bet against tuan. anyone in the nba is unbeleivably skilled and athletic a 5'4 asian dude has 0 chance ever to score a single point if the nba guy is trying no matter what shoes he has on.

I like this week's lineup they are all relaxed and I think it makes for good tv..

About that K9 v KQ hand was interesting, I think the only hand Tuan beats that is in Howard's range is 99 and a small chance of k9, Lederer raises qq and jj pf..

All in all an interesting episode much better than alot of thier line ups.

FYP, I'm sure there are people capable of laying this hand down.

That said, I'm probably not one of them. However, it would have been a crying call. Seriously, please list a couple hands that Howard is raising in this spot that K9 beats.

Are you kidding, most of 2+2 would have gone broke with that hand. HUGE props for Tuan just calling there, and the J on the turn probably saved him (another bet and call or raise on a brick turn would commit him to the pot, especially if he fills up on the river).

Gus Hansen is my hero for his rant after Lindgren and Negreanu boasted about thinking about folding: "I love when the pros debate folding kings full! 'Oh, I put him on exactly KQ, in a limped pot 6-handed, of course that's all he can have, I would have to fold kings full of 9s there obviously!' Gimme a f**king break! Yeah, Tuan, that was a bad call, man, terrible call."

So awesome.

Remember, this is a game where Mizrachi seriously considered calling Lindgren with J-high on an AKQ76 board.

I'd have called yes 100%..

But then again im a tourney donk so that doesnt say much..

I ust thought it was an interesting spot because it was Lederer.. Anyone else at the table its probably a fist pump instacall.

Re: Poker After Dark thread (Week of 9/17 - Poker At Its Best)

30% of 2+2ers shove with K9
60% instacall
5% think and then make a crying call
5% fold

And yes, I loved it when gus made fun of folding Kings full.

Re: Poker After Dark thread (Week of 9/17 - Poker At Its Best)

When Howard raised on the river, I tried to think what Tuan could put him on that he could beat, and there wasn't much, considering that it was Lederer. Howard wouldn't play the straight like that, and he wouldn't play lone K like that because of the board texture. He had to have a full house, and there is at best one full house that Tuan beats. No way I would've gotten myself to fold that, though, I just can't make myself do that even with the board as scary as that.

There have been many Gus LOL moments this week, but that was probably the funniest so far. That said, I still have a hard time seeing what Howard is raising here other than a bluff that K9 can beat. Possibly 99, I guess. Like I said, I would have called, and I think calling is correct, but it wouldn't have been a super confident one. As far as for going broke on that river, I dunno, I think that would be a pretty bad reraise allin.

westhoff 09-19-2007 07:21 PM

Re: Poker After Dark thread (Week of 9/17 - Poker At Its Best)

I thought about this hand a lot. I don't think there is anyway in real time at that table I could fold. However, contrary to what Gus said, the only real hand Howard can have there is KQ or KJ. Any other made hand, Howard just calls. And Howard is bluffing here like never. It's not a ridiculous laydown at all. And shoving is obviously incredibly stupid.

Anyway, I'm enjoying this week of pad for sure. Looking forward to the next show.

gus is my hero for his rant after the KQ-K9 hand, and to those who claim they'd even have consider folding the K9 you're kinda pathetic

TheCount212 09-19-2007 07:52 PM

Re: Poker After Dark thread (Week of 9/17 - Poker At Its Best)

Good points all. Well, Howard wasn't playing too much in EP, but he had played KQo and won with it at least one hand earlier that I can recall. I agree with Gus' rant.. that was really an excellent example of discretion being the better part of valor in the early goings of NL SnGs..
..Tuan tore a page out of the Phil Hellmuth playbook here. Let that be a lesson to all the pushbots =]

Papi Shasho 09-19-2007 08:48 PM

Re: Poker After Dark thread (Week of 9/17 - Poker At Its Best)

Yeah yeah yeah, discuss the hand all you want. No one on this board, I don't care who you are, is laying that hand down. Period.

Some would call right away, some would think about it hard and then call, some would reraise allin, but NO ONE WILL FOLD. Not 5% of the players here, not 1% of the players here. NO ONE. Case closed.

6 handed tourney, winner takes all, you simply can't wait for the unbeatable nuts to call a raise on the river. Great discipline from Tuan for not raising over the top, but no one is folding. Sorry guys. Hindsight is always 20-20.
