What do you say when asked what you do for a living?
I have been playing poker full time for the past 8 months and when people asked what I am doing at the moment I feel akward saying I play poker online for a living right now. Is there a better term I could use? I also plan to play part-time now and get myself a job, so its probably gonna be the same issue when an employer asks me the question. I usually say I am an investor but when people ask me what is it that I invest in, I usually hate saying I invest in cards. For some reason I dont feel confortable saying I am or have been playing poker for a living. Daytrader? Investor? Gambler? Is there a better or more specific term that I could use?

Re: What do you say when asked what you do for a living?
i am not pro poker player, but I do have a trust fund and get the question on a seemingly daily basis... It depends on who asks. If it is some judgement rich prick then I say im an investor (do you own a house? Say you are a real estate investor then, lol), if it is a normal person who i know will not give a crap, i just say "i am in between things right now (inferring that i am a lazy pos), and laugh at myself."
These both seem to work fine |

Re: What do you say when asked what you do for a living?
equity analyst ftw.
i usually go with investor, daytrader etc. most people are too stupid to know anything about those jobs and don't tend to ask questions. it also helps that i look a lot older than 21 so it's a lot more believable. |
Re: What do you say when asked what you do for a living?
actuary - normal people will look at you with a blank expression of complete confusion and will not ask any more questions. sharp people will have a vague idea of what it is and not ask any more questions.
however, to avoid implying life-nittiness, equity analyst/investor/day trader is probably the best response. |

Re: What do you say when asked what you do for a living?
I have business cards that give my name, website, phone number, etc..in the area where you'd normally expect to see occupation it says, "Poker Player/Situational Analyst".
In a larger sense, I've almost never had anything like a real job..I've always been in "situations" of one kind or another: Various types of stock market/trader/stockbroker situations, computer consulting, etc. These days, when someone asks me what I do, in one of those social situations where the answer is kind of irrelevant, I just mumble something about trading/investing, or "computer stuff", or similar--which is still kinda true--I make a lot more money from my investments than I do from poker (although I am a long-term winner at both). |

Re: What do you say when asked what you do for a living?
poker coach works so much better than telling someone you re a poker player. for some reason it implies some sort of stability that people obv dont feel you have when you say you re a player. i dont actually coach people on anything other than a casual basis but im not above lying to idiots.
