Why do people think Gabe Thaler is one of best?
 

I'll start by saying he is obviously a very good player. And his greatest attribute seems to be game selection. But why in the world do people keep saying he is one of the top 5 NL cash players in the world?

Gabe is super solid. Before he was the king of vegas No Limit he ran the NL games on UB with Prahlad.

There is a certain amount of butt kissing when it comes to Gabe because he runs the big game at the Venetian and he does a good job bringing in fish. If you want to play at the Venetian playing by Gabe's rules is important. I think it is just an income thing mostly.

There is no question though, Gabe is solid. The currect NL superstar though is apparently Kenny Tran.

I don't think this is an easy fold at all, but the most impressive thing to me was how quickly he folded to the river bet, as well as him showing the AK.

beanie what was gabe's name on UB? also gabe is solid have played with him live before, I dont think he's top 5 though because hes just more nittier than I prefer, he's most likely top 10 at full ring live though...I could name 20 online players off the top of my head better than him at 6 max most likely though

P.S. in one of my encounters with Gabe, he's a v nice guy, dont know him well though

that hand was played so freaking bad. he threw out too many chips for a call. then checked the turn. then made a huge massive bet on the river when the few hands that would call all are crushing him now. only one hand can call that river bet, and that is AK, and he bet too much to get a call from a dangerous board.

I think Gabe is great and have played with him a ton on UB and some live. However "he ran the NL games on UB with Prahlad" is just not true. He was a solid and winning player for sure, but he definitely was nowhere near as tough or dominant as Prahlad online during that period. Gabe imo is far better live than he is online.

well OK. Prahlad was in a different league at that time. But Gabe was there every day and he was one of the big winners.

For a certain while there it was Gabe, Prahlad and a bunch of other guys. When the games were hottest I know Gabe took his fair share out.

But your point is taken, you couldn't really compare anyone to Prahlad at that point.

1) He is, at a minimum, a very good player.

2) He is a really nice guy.

3) In the B&amp;M poker culture, and particularly in LV, there is a constant re-ordering of the group's "leader board" as to who is the best player, besides yourself of course. Who is currently "the best" is highly correlated to who is running the hottest, who has the most friends, and who is actually a good poker player.

I don't know Gabe that well but I doubt he really cares if people think he's the best or not.

I'd put that laydown somewhere between standard and world-class. The way you guys were pumping it up, I kept expecting the ace to hit on the river and Gabe to somehow get away.

He did really well on Live at the Bike when he was on there playing I believe either $25/50 or $50/$100 NL.


I thought his play was superb. I hear he is a great pot limit player.

Its pretty hard to comment about the hand without knowing the history between the two.

VS some ppl he might fold to the flop raise and to others he might be stacking off. This hand really proves nothing apart from that hes compotent.

I have no opinion on his play because I have never played with him. But one hand doesnt make him a genius or a donkey, but im probably speaking too much sense for NVG.

Hmm, I don't specifically remember playing with him, although that was long ago and I am old and losing my memory.
