Poker In Colorado?
i am new to colorado,
are there any casinos that have poker rooms here, i am in boulder but am willing to drive, thank you |
Re: Poker In Colorado?
Blackhawk/Central City offers live poker.
But due to "family gaming" regs in the CO constitution, it's limited to NLHE tournaments paying 5 places and cash games with a 2-5 spread or 5/5 fixed limit. Still beatable IMO, but it sucks that there's no cash NLHE. If you want to check it out hop on I-70 west, take exit 243 - Central City Parkway. |

WTF? He's in Boulder, not north Denver.
HW93 (aka Broadway in Boulder) south to US 6 west to HW119 west to Blackhawk/Central City. The cash games are holdem or omaha 8, with either a 2-5 spread or fixed 5 max bet. Rake is ridiculous. Play is horrible. Tournaments range from tiny to merely small. Some of the structures are OK, others are ridiculously fast. The Central Station Sunday noon tourney is the most popular and has an acceptable structure last time I checked. |

Re: Poker In Colorado?
Central city drains right down into Blackhawk and you don't have to deal with 6 to 119, which is 1 lane and twisting - I've found that CC parkway is faster.
Also, I've never seen OH/8 spread once, in the last 4 years. Most people I've ever seen on a OH/8 waitlist is 3. When I was at Ameristar last week, I asked the scrub when the last time they spread OH/8 was and he said it's been years. Re: the tournaments - all the tournaments I've played at Gilpin Casino and at Colorado Central Station have been limited to 60 players and pay 5 places. Special events or higher buyin tournaments may have more - I looked in the gaming regs and there's nothing there limiting the size, so it is probably dependent on individual casino rules. |

I was there a couple weeks ago and there was a o/8 game going with a 8 person list |

He's going to have to drive 10 minutes extra just to get to I70, then go PAST both towns, then come back on the parkway. 6 to 119, while it is one lane, is way faster if you're not already on 70. drive straight down canyon and dont stop till you feel a scratchy itchy yet nevertheless violent feeling in your anus...that be the rake/standard tip.

Sorry for any misinformation then, it was based on 5 tournaments I've played and probably 20 trips to the cash tables over the past few years.

Re: Poker In Colorado?
To the OP, you might want to check out:
http://www.gilpinpoker.com as they have the most tourneys up in Blackhawk. Plus, you're in luck! The Heartland Poker Tour is coming to Blackhawk next month (in October). Details in this thread here: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showfl...0&fpart=all in the tourney forum. BTW, Welcome to Colorado, the land of No fold 'em Hold 'em, aka Bingo or Lotto poker (you have my sympathies on that aspect, as IMO, live action poker sucks here because of the 5 buck max bet rule, and normal tournaments are not much better, because that way of thinking tends to bleed over into the tournament play as well). |
Re: Poker In Colorado?
Has there ever been any talk or is there any interest to raise the maximum bet or perhaps allow NL?
|
Re: Poker In Colorado?
The closest thing I've heard, is a rumor (and it's just a rumor) that the Colorado Legislature MIGHT raise the Min bet to 100 bucks, due to the fact that all casinos are slated to go no smoking as of Jan 1st, 2008.
If it does, it might open the doorway to allow for a simular law as Florida currently has, with a 100 buck buy in for poker, and allow for N/L to take place. However, it's just a rumor cirulating among the casino table dealers (not the poker ones, but the ones that staff the table games the casino runs), and I've yet to hear or see anything in the news about such a move to up the max bet. FYI, from what I understand, they've not increased the max bet (which is 5 bucks) in Colorado since they first opened up casinos over 15 years ago. While 100 bucks might be considered too high for a max bet, one would think that just based on inflation, they should raise the max bet allowed upwards, but they have not as of yet. |
Re: Poker In Colorado?
The cash games suck! No fold em hold em... with a just increased rake to $5 bucks. The Lodge Casino 5-5 games are infested with Asian collusion teams... casino does nothing to stop them (wives feeding the slots downstairs!). {mod note: This is very serious allegation to make. It is also very common for players that can't beat loose aggressive games to claim there is cheating. -RR}
There's an Omaha H/low game going every Sunday at the Gilpin Hotel Casino. The 3 o'clock Sunday tourney at the Gilpin is the best with $300 buy in and 15,000 chips, 30 min rounds, slow blind level increases, usually 6-7 tables, Avg $5,500 - $6,000 for first. The 2 o'clock Sunday tourney at Colo Central Station is good also with: $100 buy in (2000 chips) w/ 2 $100 rebuys (1000 bonus chips for rebuy at break), 30 min rounds, antes, usually gets 6-8 tables, Avg. 6,000-$7,000 for first. Both tourneys have plenty of donks and dead money! Ameristar=best buffet & cocktail waitresses! Definitely take 93 south to US 6 up the canyon... pretty drive! Good Luck |
Re: Poker In Colorado?
rake is bad? its $1 per $10 (a $19 pot gets raked $1), i guess you can call that bad, but please share which B&M you are comparing it to?
when i played 4-8 in cali they raked 4+1 immediately on any hand seeing a flop, THAT is a bad rake. i changed limits quickly. also all drinks ive ever ordered were free+tip, you get $1 food/room comp credit per hour of table time. im not saying its great, but for colorado entertainment gambling, i cant see them going any cheaper. josh |
Re: Poker In Colorado?
uhhh...most pots get to 21$ after the first 3 people act pf.so u got ur 6 or 7 dollar rake/jackpot drop plus 2-5 dollar standard tip 30 hands an hour, that is a ridiculous amount of money leaving the table every hour.the only way to beat this game is to run like god. there are no other options.

I know the 5-5 dealer's choice at the Gilpin has no Jackpot, but the only places I am very familiar with are the Gilpin, Lodge, and Ameristar. |

[/ QUOTE ] I agree, in the land of no fold 'em hold 'em, it's not unusual preflop to have all 10 players in a hand. Many of them will continue in the pot all the way to the river, no matter how hard you bet. Then there are the Asian colusion teams that Frequent the Ameristar, Lodge and most recently, the Gilpin Casinos. They sit there and talk in their language with each other, sometimes even with the dealers themselves, and when we try to get the rule of 'English only' enforced, normally all it draws is shrugged shoulders from the floor staff. I truly HATE living in Colorado because the poker sucks sooo badly! I'm looking for every opportunity to be rid of this place, and move someplace where I can play REAL poker on a regular basis. All I need is a job in my field, in places like Vegas, Memphis, and Louisville, KY (Jimmy Allen runs the best poker room I've ever played in, there at Ceasars Indiana). |
Re: Poker In Colorado?
There is a social gambling exemption in Colorado that allows private games to run. Raked games are illegal and you should be very careful in them. There are a few games in Boulder. The country clubs are where the big games are located and are by invitation.

The rake is not as heavy in some markets and it plays much larger than a 3-6 game. I haven't been here long at all so I do not have significant personal records, but knowing games that play smaller with a larger amount coming off the table I know the games have to be beatable. I have not had a losing session yet in Black Hawk, but I have only played here 5 times. I don't know if there are any games up here besides our 5-5 choice that do not have a bad beat; I am not overly concerned with what other casinos are doing. As far as providing a disclaimer I think that would be excessive advertising as I am sure any regular readers of this forum would say that any poker room I am involved with is going to be better than the ones down the street. |

I wish you guys (managment) would actively persue this... remember you can refuse service to anyone for any reason! People are kicked out of casinos all the time for even the SUSPICION of cheating (or even winning too much- see Richard Brody!). Re: Poker In Colorado?
I have played in Black Hawk for about 3 years a couple times a week and some of the tourneys are not bad at all. Tuesday at Station is $225 + $105 rebuy and you get 10k in chips, thursday at Gilpin $200 and you get 15k in chips, and all weekend at Gilpin you get great payouts. Friday is $50 with 9 $50 rebuys which leads to a great prize pool, Saturday is $100 +$100 at 3 and $100 + 4 $100 rebuys at 7, and then the best tourney of the weekend is the 3pm which for $300 gives you 15k in chips and 30 minute levels and good structure.

Re: Poker In Colorado?
As far as live action I think the only way you can turn a profit in a 2-5 game is to build pots for when you make hands and knowing when to save bets when you are beat. I definitely think you can beat the 5-5 Choice game with ease though if you have any clue what is going on.

What successful colluders do is play best hand play best hand and fold hands they otherwise wouldn't rather than lay odds to their opponents. If you have some specific examples I would be happy to look at them, but in almost every case of these allegations they are made by people that hate variance that think when people start raising because it is fun they must be colluding. |
Re: Poker In Colorado?
ill post my figures, for whatever its worth...
i've played 200 hours at 2-5 spread in blackhawk mostly at the lodge and central station, spread over 4 years. Im up $200 in 2-5 (after dealer tips), 1 whopping dollar per hour. ive played 15 tournements (half 3 table half 5 table) there and am up $300 after tip. (i prefer cash for learning) most meals and drinks are comped, so after travel gas and waitress tips, which i dont track, im guessing im down a small amount. that being said... i consider all my time in blackhawk dedicated to learning. I don't draw any conclusions about my level of play from this post, just giving up some numbers for conversation. josh |
Re: Poker In Colorado?
I'm definitely not an expert on the topic, but I am a winning playing in Black Hawk (and the few times I played in Vegas), but it is hard to beat the rake at lower limits. Plus, I'm not a fan of the bad beat jackpots because it feels like being forced to buy a lottery ticket any time I win the pot. (And, I do think the "what if" mentality can influence people to play cards they would never ordinarily play.) I prefer to play tournaments but I have been playing more and more cash games because I can usually make my tourney buy-ins and help my bottom line.
That said, my two favorite places to play are the Gilpin and the Ameristar. While I love the dealers at the Gilpin, the cash games at the Ameristar always seem to be juicier for me. Just like anywhere else, you need to feel out your table after you first sit down and ease your way into the game. It can vary by time of day, day of the week, etc, but after trying out each room at different times and different days, I think you can find one or two that suit your style and will be profitable for you. You can generalize some of the rooms and say that players at Casino A are all rocks Casinos B + C are all maniacs, but you can't really judge a game until you sit down and observe for a round. Some tables are filled with recreational players playing for entertainment and constantly rebuying. Some tables are filled with more familiar faces and all you do is pass a few chips around the table until they are raked away. If a table isn't going your way, you can always try to get a table change, take a 30 minute break, or even pop over to a new poker room. All the rooms in Central City and Black Hawk are just a few minutes apart. Depending on the time of day and day of week, you can sit down at a $2-5 rock-tight table and have another $2-5 table right behind you that reraises every hand. Your own personal style may prefer one over the other, but I think if you are patient and observant you can do well in either. |
Re: Poker In Colorado?
There is no variation in 2/5 games up the hill. I would much rather put money on FTP then drive the hour up and back. It's next to impossible to beat the 2 5 game with rake and donks involved.

And no I won't be getting the records and sharing them here becasue what people do in a casino is there business. You have to look at it logically; if a smaller game with a larger rake in another market is known to be beatable this game would have to be. 5 session is plenty for an experienced player to know if they have an edge. After you have been playing and know the game you don't need to use a statistical test to evaluate a game. The game existed long befor people were playing on-line and looking at large samples. If you cannot watch a game and determine if you would have an edge in that game you need to look for smaller games. And I don't think you will find any mod on this site that would say bad players make the game harder to beat. This is just another version of "I need to play higher so they will respect my raises." |
