Just getting into PC gaming

So I got a new laptop and would love some recommendations on good games. Basically, I'm looking for anything I can pick up for 30 minutes at a time. I'm not into hardcore strategy games, but I remember enjoying RPG's when I was younger. I also liked Civilization when I played it years back. I know it's kinda vague, but can anyone recommend me some good games that aren't too complex/involved?

If you have not played Half Life 2, it is a pickup. Also even older, I thought Doom3 was a real fun game. Ever seen the game Black & White?

I would agree that Half Life 2 is pretty much essential.

Yea I just got a new pc with 3ghz intel core 2 duo and 8800 gts. Currently playing battlefield 2 and cs but I'm looking for some other ones that take more advantage of my setup. Is FEAR any good multiplayer or is it more geared towards singleplayer.

Farcry was absolutely amazing. Really hard game to finish tho, especialy in the harder levels.

Deus ex is also an amazing game. Allthought it`s old for today`s standarts.

Half life 2

Vampires - Bloodlines is a nice game too.

Picked up Medal of Honor Airborne today and single player is extremely fun.

The graphics are excellent and I am a bit dizzy after playing

dig it

Fortress Forever has just been released, it's a free mod for Half Life 2 and quite fast paced so good for some MP fun. FF games don't take very long in general.

Maybe you'll like management/simulation games like Rollercoaster Tycoon? You can pick this up, play for 20 minutes, save, then carry on where you left off whenever.

Armadillo Run
Trackmania (but make sure your computer doesn't mind Starforce before you install it)
Try the MMO experience for free
Grim Fandango, an excellent adventure game
The Longest Journey, another great adventure game
Half-Life 2 is a great story-intensive action-adventure
...although for sheer exhilirating insanity, it's hard to beat Serious Sam
Though Painkiller gives it a run for its money
Of course, not all awesomely ultraviolent PC games are 3D
And some are phenomenal despite being only moderately violent (this is one of the very best 1st person PC games of all time, superior to Half-Life 2 IMO)
Of course, the PC is home to many excellent RPGs, old SCHOOL and new school alike, as well as promising titles on the horizon

And of course, this wouldn't be an Ilya VG post if it didn't plug Gametap!
