Any other closet Pokemon players out there?
Back in the original Gameboy Color days I used to love playing Pokemon. Im not talking about the game itself, but rather battling other people. There is a pretty good amount of strategy in that facet of the game. Anyhow, two of my daughters recently acquired their own Pokemon games and I've been feeling the urge again. Whose with me?! Re: Any other closet Pokemon players out there?
The whole pokemon battling scene is way too hardcore for me. I hear nowadays you have to have no life to be able to just compete.

Re: Any other closet Pokemon players out there?
Yeh it is kinda ridiculous. You have to breed them a million times until you get the right moves + natural tendencies combos, then train them from birth up to 100 only fighting against certain enemies that give points to the stats that you want to train. It scares me to think that people would devote that much to this game, but the single player is still charming simple fun to poop to.

Re: Any other closet Pokemon players out there?
So whats a good site to get, um, my friend, up to speed on the latest happening in the battling world?

Re: Any other closet Pokemon players out there?
I loved it, still played until I was like 16/17 haven't played the new ones though was considering buying a DS just 4 it.

Re: Any other closet Pokemon players out there?
Wow, I used to be very into both the cards and the games (the original Blue and Red, then Yellow versions). In terms of the cards, I battled seldom, opting to go after the 'rare' holographs. Good times...

Re: Any other closet Pokemon players out there?
The Penny Arcade guys posted about this Pokémadness. It sounds like a trip down the rabbit hole.
|
Re: Any other closet Pokemon players out there?
Dang you beat me to it Falcon. Did you read the post of the letter that the kid sent them about how he was going to quit playing pokemon until he heard about what the penny arcade did? That was pretty cool

Re: Any other closet Pokemon players out there?

Re: Any other closet Pokemon players out there?
I played Red or Blue back when they came out. I recently got a DS and picked up Pearl. It's really good fun and I've put a lot of time into it. But the interest has cooled and I'm not playing it at the moment. The only thing left to do is battling and I can't be arsed to breed properly.

Re: Any other closet Pokemon players out there?
I love the Pokemon games. Played Blue and Sapphire all the way through. I really don't want to buy a DS just to get Pearl, but I might eventually.

VR,
That Wired article was solid. Thanks for the tip. |
Re: Any other closet Pokemon players out there?
Serebii is good stuff...it's ridiculous how intensive this game really is. At first glance you would neeeeeeeever think that this would be so complicated. :P
I've logged over 200 hours on Pearl since I got it...and now I'm doing the crazy training stuff. The old games were so simple compared to the new ones. Lots of fun though. |
Re: Any other closet Pokemon players out there?
dthorne,
There was a ridiculously good website back in the R/G/Y days , I think it was called Crystal Palace or some such nonsense. Anyhow, serebii seems pretty good, still trying to locate some other similar sites. For my friend of course. Falcon, NP on the Wired article. Glad you enjoyed it. |
Re: Any other closet Pokemon players out there?
hmm, i'll look it up, see if i can find it. i swore to myself i wouldn't get in depth with this, but it's such an addictive and fun game. serebii is very, very good, i promise. i just bred a really strong hitmonlee with its help. it's a one hit kill machine. (loserthorne04)
p.s. gl with "your friend". |

Just a warning, you will want to douse yourself with gasoline before you finish EV training your Pokemon. Breeding for good/perfect IVs is probably even worse especially since the reward is not as great. I wouldn't know because I got bored of the game before getting obsessed enough to attempt breeding for good IVs. The simplest advice I can give is to not have gaping Weavile/Heracross/Azelf/Gyarados weakness. This is much more difficult than it may seem. This game does not really reward vivid imagination, using cookie cutter Pokemon in such a way as to exploit the metagame is the way to go. |
Re: Any other closet Pokemon players out there?
agreed on a lot of points...i chose to work with a hitmonlee because i don't feel like using the obvious choices first. if i ever take the dive into wi-fi battling i'll probably use the best ones i can. but for the in game stuff, it's fun to use something different. i ev trained my hitmonlee...the iv [censored] is just ridiculous, however. ev training isn't -too- bad.

Re: Any other closet Pokemon players out there?
All this makes me glad I never got a DS to play Pearl on. I loved the easy, simplistic older Pokemon games. I doubt I would like these new ones

Re: Any other closet Pokemon players out there?
Not quite closet...I've always told everyone that Pokemon was probably one of the best RPG's on the market that rivals the like of old school FF6 or Chrono Trigger.
If they made a completely 3D one on the Wii with the same formula I`d probably hide my excitement though. |

[/ QUOTE ] qft. it's sick how deep this game gets. compared to the old versions, it's beyond belief. a full scale wii version would be insane. i don't think it'll ever happen, though. |
Re: Any other closet Pokemon players out there?
Pokemon is awesome. add me to closet pokemon lovers but don't tell anyone.
