More cable movies on the DVR
Prior Thread
OK, so I still haven't really watched most of the movies on that list, but I'm reviewing them as I get to them. This thread is only for movies that are out on cable, NOT for movies that are in the theater. Find an existing thread or make a new thread to talk about movies that you can see in a theater. Here are the latest movies on the DVR: All The King's Men The Illusionist Jet Li's Fearless Elizabeth (old, recorded it because I never watched it and saw trailer for sequel that I might want to see) The Prestige Shut Up and Sing (Dixie Chicks docu) Half Nelson Employee of the Month Aeon Flux The Wicker Man (so I have both The WICKER Man and The WEATHER Man starring Nick Cage hmmm) The Bridge (GG Bridge suicide doc) The Bad News Bears Akeelah and the Bee The Queen Thoughts on these? Please comment on whatever movies you see on HBO/Showtime/etc, especially crappy fluff movies. |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
I really liked "The Prestige".
Not a movie where you can guess what is coming next. The old "All the King's Men" is a classic and well worth watching. Have no idea of the remake. |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
Half Nelson is an art house type flick that is produced well and has above average acting. The main character is a grade AAA scumbag. So much so that it really detracts from the movie viewing experience. So I guess you could say it's a good flick just because it evokes strong emotions from the viewer.
The Bridge rocks. The best part is the interview with the one guy who survives the jump. |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
Half Nelson is real good, definitely worth a watch, Ryan Gosling is gonna be one of the best actors of our generation I think.
Both Illusionist/The Prestige should be seen. |

The Illusionist Elizabeth The Prestige Half Nelson Akeelah and the Bee The Queen [/ QUOTE ] are good. I haven't seen The Bridge, but it's probably good, too. |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
What channel are the Bridge and Half Nelson showing on?

The Illusionist [/ QUOTE ] Very good, recommended. [ QUOTE ] Jet Li's Fearless [/ QUOTE ] From what I remember of this movie, it was quite entertaining -- not as good as Hero or some of his other Hong Kong style action movies, but entertaining. [ QUOTE ] The Prestige [/ QUOTE ] Highly recommended. Some minor plot issues for me, but all in all a very entertaining movie. [ QUOTE ] Aeon Flux [/ QUOTE ] Awful. Delete it now. Probably worse than 'Lucky You.' -d |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
The Illusionist and The Queen are both very solid. Definitely watch those.
Akeelah & the Bee is watchable, but not spectacular. I mean, you can pretty much imagine the whole plot without even watching the movie. Bad News Bears is mostly garbage, but with a few mildly funny moments. I wouldn't bother unless you're really bored. |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
shaniac,
IFC and Sundance. I don't see them on right now, but movies shown generally show up again on those channels. |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
the prestige, the illusionist, the bridge, the queen, half nelson, elizabeth are worth your time.
the rest not so much. btw all seek out the lives of others. really really good. |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
elizabeth came out a long time ago, so i don't remember much of it in terms of plot, but you should watch it simply for cate blanchett's performance. she was exactly how i imagine a woman would need to be in order to rule, and rule successfully. |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
I kinda liked Aeon Flux, even though it's not good. The look is cool, the action is reasonable, and the worst plot point doesn't show up until the end, after you've had your fun.
|
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
I had high hopes for The Bridge after reading posts about it on here but I thought it was really boring and lame.
|
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
All The King's Men and Elizabeth are both quite good.
|
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
the wicker man has pissed off 3 people that I know
bad news bears was good for what kind of movie it is - a degen who asks like a douche to everyone and is somewhat funny I've heard good things about akeelah and the bee |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
Aeon Flux sucked, and I say that as the type of person who was really excited to watch Aeon Flux. Just watch The Fifth Element again or something, it's much cooler.
I liked both The Illusionist and The Prestige, but too much magician content can be dangerous to your mental health. I'd pick The Illusionist but it's close. |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
One movie I have on my DVR:
The Zodiac -- I was looking forward to seeing this in theatres, but never got around to it -- worth my time? -d |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
el d,
employee of the month, are you talking about the one with jessica simpson or matt dillon? the one with jessica looks pretty dumb, but the one with matt dillon was awesome. |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
All The King's Men - see the original and forget the remake The Illusionist - very good, I liked it a lot Jet Li's Fearless - haven't seen it Elizabeth - fantastic! The Prestige - interesting to compare this to The Illusionist - both are quite good Shut Up and Sing - interesting and worthwhile Half Nelson - very good Employee of the Month - haven't seen it Aeon Flux - haven't seen it The Wicker Man - haven't seen it The Bridge - haven't seen it The Bad News Bears - stick with the original Akeelah and the Bee - haven't seen it The Queen - very good |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
I've seen part of the new Bad News Bears and it just depresses me because it is so bad.
The original is an absolutely wonderful flic. This remake is an embarassment. |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
I watched The Illusionist and The Prestige on the same day, and they're similar, so I keep blending them in my head.
They were both good. The Illusionist was a little bit more predictable (like standard formulaic), but was more fun to watch. The both kept me interested though. I haven't seen Employee of the Month but I'm pretty sure it's one of those movies that you know how you're gonna feel about it after watching the previews. My good friend had to write a review about it for a local paper and was really upset about it. He didn't like it. |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
It's inexplicable that I've only seen one of these movies, but alas...
Akeelah and the Bee sucked. It reminded me of the Full House episode where Kareem was guesting and Jesse found his "sweet spot" on the basketball court. |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
The Bridge is good.
I hated the Illusionist, but most people seemed to like it. The Prestige is hot. Solid movie on its own, but the fact that it fooled 99% of people who watched it makes it awesome. |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
Go ahead and delete employee of the month. Save you some valuable time.

Re: More cable movies on the DVR
All,
Was hung over and lazy yesterday, stayed home and watched movies all day. Bad News Bears - wow, this was really bad. An occassional funny line or two, but overall quite bad. Nowhere near the original. Akeelah and the Bee - pretty much exactly what I expected. A fun, light, inspirational type film. Worth watching. Not as good as Searching for Bobby Fischer, so I'd recommend that instead if you're in the mood for one Larry Fishburne mentors a young prodigy film. Aeon Flux - not good, but surprisingly better than I expected. I mean, let me be clear, it's not a good movie. But Charlize Theron looks so hot, there's plenty of action (a little on the cheesy side), and the simple and somewhat dumb story is at least mildly interesting. I expected this to be horrible, instead it was merely not very good. |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
The Wicker Man is horrendous

I thought after all the twists were revealed at the end it was pretty self explantory? |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
Not that I want to derail the thread but the prestige should be your next watch for sure. Way better than the illusionist which was predictable but mildly entertaining. A lot of people preferred the illusionist and I don't understand why.
I'd keep ATKM but wouldn't be in any hurry to watch it if youve seen the original or read the book. I've heard the Dixie chicks doc is quite good from a few friends. Most of the other ones are watch at your own pace and mildly entertaining/good. I'd probably watch Half Nelson first out of the rest. |

Re: More cable movies on the DVR
Jet Li's Fearless - I was actually really surprised to find that I enjoyed this. I thought this was going to be another brainless action flick, but there's actually a semblance of a plot here.
The Prestige - loved it. Like others have said, it's hard to tell what's coming next. Half Nelson - I agree with some posters above, Ryan Gosling is a fantastic actor. He was also phenomenal in a movie called 'The Believer', where he plays a Jewish neo-Nazi. The Bridge (GG Bridge suicide doc) - I was actually kind of disappointed in this. I mean, it was pretty good, but I guess just not as great as I was expecting. |

I could be wrong about my opinions on the movie, all my friends thought I was nuts after we watched it and talked about it, but after a 2nd viewing I'm 99.9% sure I'm right. Can't really talk about it here tho I guess :/ |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
I'm interested in your theory as well.

Re: More cable movies on the DVR
GoT:
Why not start a "The Prestige (spoilers)" thread in the The Lounge to discuss this. I'd be interested in what you're talking about, as apparently are others. |

[/ QUOTE ] Yeah, I'd love to hear a good theory. The movie pretty explicitly suggests that there's something you're missing at the end, and while I have ideas about it I haven't worked the whole thing out to my satisfaction. |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
"The Prestige" is worth watching. It takes some attention, but it has good acting, a fun plot twist, and Scarlett J. in a Victorian maid-type costume.
I haven't seen the remake of "All the King's Men," but if missed the original (with Broderick Crawford), definitely make a point of seeing it. One of my favorite movies (the book's even better). It's on AMC pretty regularly, so you might be able to DVR it if you don't mind the commercials. |
Re: More cable movies on the DVR
delete the nicholas cage wicker man but def watch the original 1973 version if/when you come across it.

All The King's Men and Elizabeth are both quite good. [/ QUOTE ] Hah, I was thinking of All The President's Men, haven't seen All The King's Men, so nevermind on that. Elizabeth is really good though, especially Geoffrey Rush. |

Re: More cable movies on the DVR
All,
As usual, managed to add some to the DVR but not really watch much. I did manage to catch a couple of random cable movies in the last two weeks, though. Idiocracy: The blurb was "a dullard awakens 1000 years in the future to find he is the smartest person alive" and it starred Luke Wilson. How could I not watch it? Well, I watched about 10 minutes and thought it was idiotic. Then some friends were over and someone mentioned that it was directed by Mike Judge. That made me give it another chance. It was pretty idiotically bad, but also sorta entertaining in a really stupid Beavis and Butthead way. Not recommended, but not absolutely horrible either. Goal! The Dream Begins: Blurb was something like "Mexican cook gets a chance at his dream of playing professional soccer." OK, well, how can I pass that up? This was super cliched, but whatever, it was exactly what I expected and hoped for. Guy chasing his dream, some roadblocks come up that he overcomes, some bad guys show heart when they see how much this kid deserves it, he gets to address some of his personal/family issues through the challenges of sports, etc. This was far more entertaining than Invincible, but no Rudy or anything. Not GOOD, but I recommend it to generic sports underdog movie fans. New ones added to DVR: Lady in the Water - Whatever, I watch all of his movies. I expect there to be a twist. World Trade Center - Nick Cage has lots of movies on cable. Hollywoodland - Adrien Brody movie, I remember previews looking maybe OK. Inside Deep Throat - documentary Army of Darkness - this is one of those movies I have somehow never seen. |
