Guaranteed Payout Tournies- If it doesn\'t fill, should you play?

I am skeptical of guaranteed payout tournaments online if the buyin doesn't cover the payout?

Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on this? Do websites (any of them) actually pay out say, $3,500.00 in a guaranteed tournament if the buy-ins only generate $3,000? It doesn't seem profitable to be and seems fishy.

I'm hesitant to join these when I see low turnout.

Any thoughts? Suggestions? Input? Experiences of getting screwed? Conspiracy theories?

It isn't a giant scam and most of the time the site is breaking even/ making money off the rake that was already paid for the entry by the other players.

I don't understand why you would be hesitant? Lower turnout in a guaranteed tourny= more value per player= GOOD thing.

You shouldn't play if you don't like money.

I agree if all is on the up-and-up. I was just asking if everyone thought the sites actually made a habit of ponying up the extra $$$ to hit the guarantee.

At the site I play at it's rare for there to be an overlay. Just sign up as late as you can, and don't be surprised if there isn't an overlay. If you have rakeback, the overlay may be deducted from your MGR at some sites.

Stars does constantly. The double shoot outs to the Sunday Million (especially the $530 million) only make the guarantee about 50% of the time (especially the later, non turbo ones.)Stars still runs like 3 of these an hour.

Bodog is constantly paying out overlays for most of their tourneys. Just this week they dropped some of the guaranteed MTT money that were nearly always short. In fact I've never seen their big $100K Sunday tourney NOT have an overlay.
(I'm guessing because of the website disaster is why the drop in guarantees)
