How Do You Get Through Class?
 

I'll keep it short: my major is cake, and I pretty much coast, but all of my classes are small and have required attendance. I'm a lazy guy, but ironically, I always have to be doing tons of things at once (ex. I can't watch TV without surfing the net and talking on AIM). Doing one thing at a time bores me to the point that I can't even sit still.

So class is obviously horrible...listening to someone lecture is basically equivalent to doing nothing. All of my classes are small, so I can't read the newspaper, use a laptop, listen to music, or sleep. Two of my classes are 3 hours long, and two others are 75 minutes. I typically just stare into space or scan the class for cute girls, but this can only fill so much time. Does anyone have suggestions on how to make it through class? (Paying attention is not an option.) Does anyone do something that looks like work/notes but is actually mildly entertaining?

When I'm not spacing out or checkin out girls, which is 80% of the time, I take out my planner and write stuff I need to do over the next few days/weeks. I also have a job that requires a good amount of work so I'll think about stuff for that.

Just take notes, yo. Not just to look like you're taking notes, but actually take notes. The class goes by so much quicker.

This would force me to pay attention, and I don't really like doing that. Like I said, most of my classes are BS, so I don't really even need to take notes...I just have to show up.

Not an option, as all of my profs give penalties to people with open laptops.

What sort of archaic school do you go to? No laptops?!

I would agree with others that taking notes can actually pass time. Although if it's a discussion class it can be fun to play the ass**** and just be devil's advocate.

I did have a situation with a professor where we became friends and I would spend a lot of time in her office just talking. I explained to her my feelings on strict attendance policy and how it's absurd that I was paying to be penalized not to show. She thought about it and excused me from the policy.

I took 6 classes with her and aced each one.

There's always a way. . . .

I go to Purdue. It's not a "no laptop" school, it's just these certain classes (small classes typically frown on laptops here).

And these aren't discussion classes, so there's really no interaction; it's just non-stop lecture.

Not paying attention = boredom

You just have to choose one or the other. It's what going to school is all about.

Well, all students at my school are required to 'rent' a laptop from them each year.

As has been mentioned, if you're taking notes and interacting with the material being taught time goes much faster.

Also if you've read the material before class, then you might yourself understanding what the professor is saying better, thereby making the time more productive.

i can understand small liberal arts classes not allowing laptops. its pretty standard to bring a laptop into a big science class or something showing a powerpoint but if i was in a 15 person english class where we discuss books i can imagine the prof would look at me funny.

oh and as for ur problem...bring in a book or something, maybe a poker book you havnt read.

This is a reason why my gpa was 1.0 lower, seriously you cant do well at purdue if you dont go to class. I managed to get to 4 classes total 2 semesters ago and got a 2.3, and couldnt deal with that bs anymore.

Uh, did you read the post? I AM going to class, and I'm bored as [censored]. Since you went here, you might know...I'm in OLS (the "athlete major"), so it really takes no effort to get good grades.

There really isn't anything you can do. Find a class that interests you, suck it up and pay attention, or just suffer silently like the millions of other college students do. Although I do admit 3 hour classes blow. I tried one just to see what it was like for a semester and ended up bringing screwdrivers to class and just getting hammered to get through it.

My major was really easy as well, but the point to going to college is never going to class unless you have a test, and partying 5-6 days a week.

class definately goes by quicker when you are participating than when you arent. Day dreaming during a class makes it seem like it's 10 hours long. However, I took my laptop to World Lit and played on Full Tilt everyday. Actually won alot because I was real focused since there was nothing else to distract me

I got a New York Times puzzle a day calendar for christmas last year and that thing is incredible. The puzzles are on little white sheets of paper so they just blend in with whatever other papers you've got on you. I didn't do too many over the summer so I've got plenty to go after 2 or 3 a day.

I'm OLS, but all of the long classes basically have little to no discussion. The three hour classes are just brutal.

i write song lyrics all the time because i always have a song in my head. it's not exciting, but it's something to do that keeps you from falling asleep. i also doodle constantly. my notebooks look like sketch books or something. also make grocery lists. or budget the money i don't have. or text message.

if you can sneak your cell phone behind/under a notebook or textbook, download some game that you can play forever... sudoku, boggle, anything

Though if attendance is mandatory, I normally read a book or *GASP* actually pay attention.
