Young kids buying large amount of rubbing alcohol/wtf are they up to?
 

I was at the convenience store near my house and 4 or 5 10-12 year-old kids carrying skateboards came up behind me and put three bottles of green-colored, "spearmint" rubbing alcohol (btw, rubbing alcohol comes in flavors now? news to me) on the counter.

They were not buying any other items, and were sort of speaking to each other in hushed tones that indicated they might be up to something. I looked at one of them and said, 'what are you doing with that? is it in case you guys get cuts from falling down skateboarding?' (a joke, and a mistake of one i realized a second later), the kid replies, 'YEP, it's in case we get cut.' LOL. 3 bottles? GTFOOH.

I asked if they were drinking it but honestly they didn't look like druggies and I don't think they were lying when they said 'no'.

Is my drug-user radar busted and they're making meth or something?

Also the Hispanic clerk asked me before he rang them up, "Alcohol, iss okay to sell them?" I couldn't put these kids on a hand so I didn't really see fit to interfere so I told him to go ahead and sell it. But wtf man.

My read was that they were telling the truth about their intention not to drink it, and in any case I guess I thought pointedly asking if they were going to would at least serve as somewhat of a warning. Still though, maybe I should have intervened, I could have told the clerk I didn't think selling it was a good idea. I think the fact that I was setting [censored] on fire in the same neighborhood ten years ago may have subconsciously steered me away from dissuading them. Ah the good old days...

In Bolivia the really really poor people will drink rubbing alcohol because its really cheap and really potent. Also, a somewhat common drink on big celebrations is mixing rubbing alcohol and milk straight from a cow in a shot glass and topping it with sugar. Shots of those will get you fizzzuked up.

Can anyone confirm or deny this being true? I was always under the impression that isopropyl alcohol will make you go blind, but I can't seem to find any proof of this with google.

It's a long slow poisoning. Alcoholics in the south used to drink Sterno fluid. Enough of it will blind a dude (Canned Heat Blues), but an addiction is a long slow poisoning.

They were probably being forced to remove some illegal grafitti they painted, and would never have contemplated to drink the stuff without you telling them not to do so.

In Russia, people drink stuff like that all the time, btw.
I guess it´s not that much more dangerous than regular alcohol, just higher concentrated, and with possibly more serious long-term damages. Saying 250 ml would be deadly is likely a mild exaggeration, comparable to saying a bottle of vodka would kill you.
