Mixed Games at Casino Arizona

I just moved out to Arizona in the last two months. I have a decent amount of experience playing mixed games, mostly the bellagio 40-80 and some 1-2 and 150-3 BT games. I took a new job and have been taking a break from bigger poker games after a 50k downswing in June (mostly online 2-7 triple draw). I've been playing the 5-150 game at CAZ to relax and make a few bucks. Im getting pretty bored with it and am eyeing the mixed games that go most nights.
Stud8 and O8 are defintly not my best games but I think could hang if the games are not too tough. I'f i decide to play I'll also brush on up a few books I have on these games before I play. I guess im just wondering if anyone has any info on the game, how good it usually is, the pool of players for it (is it like the bellagio game where a handful of people support themselves solely from the game), if the game is better at CAZ off of Indian School or the other one, ect. Basically if its worth the effort to study up on the games and get the cash together. Any info would be appreciated.

There is no poker at "the other CAZ" - the only room is at Indian Bend, and that's the location of the new building once it is finished.

I don't have TONS of experience, but maybe 6-7 sessions this year and about 45 hours logged, so FWIW:

* S/8 and O/8 are by far the most popular - probably total 80% of the games/time. Next closest are probably Crazy-P, Omaha Hi, and Any Annie (sp?) which is stud hi/lo with no qualifier.

* No draw games are allowed

* Most of the regulars want to play 60-120 mix... I'm not quite there yet but will take a shot if the game is full. When I'm there I try to get it started at 40-80, preferably with no kill.

* So far this summer (slowest time of the year) it seems the lifecycle of the mix game is the typical 4-5-6 players get the game started, it fills up within an hour or so and goes for a few hours, and then (especially with a kill or at the 60-120 level) a few people get clobbered and/or kill the game, and then the game dwindles back down to 4-5 players.

* My understanding is that as fall/winter time comes around, there is a larger pool and therefore the game becomes more sustainable, and multiple tables are not uncommon, up to 75-150. But I can't verify - others here probably could.

* As far as the pool of players - it's the smallest of course, and especially at those limits. You will be playing with a few very strong professionals, a few rich lawyer/doctor types, a few nitty weak/tights who buyin for a rack hoping to get lucky, and occasionally a donkey (me) who is trying to learn. :-)

Good luck.

Anyone watching the AZ state championship final table? Its on channel 12 (cox) right now...

I'm always game for low limit mix-games, they will spread em at the Fort (i know, waaaaay too far) whenever there are enough players.

Why are draw games not allowed in the AZ?

Boooo, I missed the replay, but I was there watching it live. I was the guy with the grey longsleeve shirt and a dirty maroon ASU hat.

Last night, I got there at about 7pm, and there were two 20/40 games, a 40/80, and a 40/80 mix. At 8:30pm, both 40 games broke, and it was 3 20/40 games all night, and nothing higher. First time I have seen that in a long time. That scares me if that becomes the norm, because then I have nowhere to go from here...

My understanding was that Gila River has spread Badugi on rare occasion, so I don't know if the "no draw games" is a rule or just a common assumption.

I heard they spread Badugi at the Fort on occasion, never heard of it being spread at Gila, but who knows...

Its possible that I have Gila and Fort backwards, i am not in Phoenix often enough to avoid this mistake.

Depends on who is running the floor/room at the time. Draw games rumored to be outlawed in the compact.

There is no Badugi so forget about it, you're safe Mr. TT.

In other news:

There was such a huge Stud/8 pot Monday night that it drew a crowd from the high limit section to go look at it. Quad 2's and a 7 low split. I don't know which geniuses let themselves get caught in the middle of the raising war but they did and if they only played Stud/8 I'd be in that game whenever it went.

Would be nice to get a 30-60 or 40-80 stud/8 ONLY game going on a regular basis. <sigh>
