This article was discussed in a thread in the MTT Strategy forums. I think Paul Sexton is correct in the specific example he gives when he's extremely short. I elaborated on my thoughts in that thread.

LOL I read the thread - truly aweful advice. How did the Paul-nit get so short to begin with? Prolly trying to fold into the $$ from 2 far out !

Generally, if you are playing to cash over the bubble, you are playing over your BR. An unknown nit posting strategy advice - caveat emptor!

I posted about this on the other thread. I guess daddy got Paul a job as an FTP pro. I think a lot of these red names are amateurs who were on TV. They get paid a little by FTP to play low stakes so the donks can play a "pro", and this allows them to play poker full time.

yeah, this article was a joke, you make more money in the long run going for the win... so this is a "so called pro" who is playing out of his bankroll

seriously, who wants to win a tournament when you can cash for twice your buy-in!

this advice obviously applies to some stack of like 1 or 2 big blinds. But where do you draw the line?

Probably depends on the table, but I'd assume that if by doubling you can gain a stack big enough to have fold equity versus the opponents you're most likely to contend a pot with you should not be folding KK.

Quick question for those who think it's bad advice - have you ever seen someone come back from 0.3BBs on the bubble to go deep in the tourney? Would you say it's common? I think it's extremely rare, which is why this is a good spot to minimize your losses and try to cash. If he had 2BB, I think it's a pretty easy push with KK.

Re: bubble Advice from a Pro?

The article wasn't that bad. You all are acting like Sexton was advocating playing to cash in most situations, but he acknowledges that the general strategy should be "play to win" but that deviating from that strategy on the bubble can sometimes be correct when you have a very short stack. This advice is more applicable to big live tournaments, where the initial bubble is steep but payouts after that increase at a fairly flat rate until the final table.
