Most disappointing movie ever (high expectations, but flopped)
Hi
The other post about the "worst" movie ever does not apply here. I'm thinking of a movie that, for a variety of reasons (story, cast, director, budget), had every reason to be an excellent movie, yet it still flopped. One that comes to mind for me is Pearl Harbor. Tried to be a great war movie and have a good love story and missed badly on both. I'm sure it is not the "worst" flop, but I was disappointed. |

Re: Most disappointing movie ever (high expectations, but flopped)
I thought it would have been impossible to screw up a parody of teen movies, but Not Another Teen Movie proved me wrong.
Obviously not the most disappointing movie ever, but I think most people who saw this movie share my thoughts. |

Re: Most disappointing movie ever (high expectations, but flopped)
from Wiki...top box office BOMBS:
In the most dramatic cases, a film's poor performance can push a studio into financial ruin, as happened with United Artists (Heaven's Gate), Carolco Pictures (Cutthroat Island), Franchise Pictures (Battlefield Earth), and Square Pictures (Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within). also The size of a box office "bomb" can be determined by either the net loss sustained, or by a loss percentage (1 - gross revenue/production costs). By using these two measurements, the biggest U.S. box office bombs listed below are (respectively) Alexander (2004) with a net loss of $120,702,809, and Zyzzyx Road (2006) with a loss percentage of 99.9985% of production costs. Considering worldwide box office sales, the biggest loser was The Adventures of Pluto Nash (2002) with a net loss of $92,896,027. Contents http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...x_office_bombs |

waterworld [/ QUOTE ] I said this movie in the other thread, but it definitely fits better in this one. |
Re: Most disappointing movie ever (high expectations, but flopped)
I'm not sure I even heard of Zyzzyx Road.
They must have spent an awful lot on it and then practically completely buried it. |

Zyzzyx Road 2006 $2,000,000 $30 0.0015% lol |
Re: Most disappointing movie ever (high expectations, but flopped)
Had to look up this one because it's just so weird.
From wikipedia: The film has gained a degree of infamy due to its extremely low box office gross, making it an extreme example of a box office bomb. Zyzzyx Road lasted only six days in release, from February 25, 2006 through March 2, 2006. The film was released in only one theater, in Dallas, Texas[4]. One of the most widely recognized aspects of Zyzzyx Road is its notably low box office draw.[5] The film is the lowest grossing film of all time, earning just $30 at the box office from exactly six patrons.[6] Unofficially, its opening weekend netted twenty dollars. The ten dollar difference is due to a personal refund by Grillo to makeup artist Sheila Moore, who had worked on the film, and her friend.[2] The release was purposefully shown for a short amount of time in the single theater, which the producers had rented for $1,000, to fulfill Screen Actors Guild rules that allow a low-budget film to pay actors a lower rate as long as that film is released in the United States. This showing in Texas was to fulfill that obligation without compromising the chances for future nationwide distribution through a distribution company.[2 |
Re: Most disappointing movie ever (high expectations, but flopped)
I love Copland, one of my favorite watch it whenever it is on movies, that being said, when the previews came out for this movie, it looked like it would be the greatest movie of all time.
P.S. I'm pretty sure I have written this same paragraph before for an exact same thread. |

Damn they didn't have Zyzzyx Road on amazon. It would probably do somewhat well if they released it on DVD.

Re: Most disappointing movie ever (high expectations, but flopped)
I know lots of people liked it, which is also why I had high expectations for it, but "The Decent" really sucked and disappointed me greatly
The biggest without a doubt has to be phantom menace tho |
Re: Most disappointing movie ever (high expectations, but flopped)
I thought The Descent had very low expectations, but did surprisingly well!?
|
Re: Most disappointing movie ever (high expectations, but flopped)
Highlander 2?
Also, I think Zyzzyx Road is somewhere on the 15 between LA and Vegas FWIW. |
Re: Most disappointing movie ever (high expectations, but flopped)
Yeah, but it sucked long and hard.

Bennifer was huge at the time, but even that couldn't save this abortion of a film. |
Re: Most disappointing movie ever (high expectations, but flopped)
A few movies that had me excited pre-viewing but disappointed me (although they might or might not be a success and/or have a lot of people like 'em anyway):
- Unbreakable - Ocean's 12 - American Pie: The Wedding (parts 1 and 2 were hilarious to me) - The Truman Show (weird, I know, but not 'my thing') There are probably a lot more, but these are from the top of my head. |
Re: Most disappointing movie ever (high expectations, but flopped)
I found "The Invasion" very disappointing.

Zyzzyx Road [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Only opened in one theater (Highland Village Park Theater in Dallas, Texas) ran for six days, and amassed a final total of $20 (originally tallied as $30, but $10 was refunded to a member of the film's crew who paid to see the movie) in box office takings. Don't let the profit/loss numbers fool you. Some examples: --Art Buchwald received a settlement after his lawsuit Buchwald v. Paramount over Paramount's use of Hollywood accounting. The court found Paramount's actions "unconscionable," noting that it was impossible to believe that a movie (1988's Eddie Murphy comedy Coming to America) which grossed US$350 million failed to make a profit, especially since the actual production costs were less than a tenth of that. Paramount settled for an undisclosed sum, rather than have its accounting methods closely scrutinized. --Winston Groom's price for the screenplay rights to his novel Forrest Gump included a share of the profits; however, due to Hollywood accounting, the film's commercial success was converted into a net loss, and Groom received nothing. As such, he has refused to sell the screenplay rights to the novel's sequel, stating that he cannot in good conscience allow money to be wasted on a failure. |
