NFL teams blitzing in preseason?
This seems like a relatively new development. Since offensive teams don't scheme for particular defenses, this seems like it would give the defense the upper hand and really endanger the QB. This leads to teams not playing their #1s much at all, which in turn even further dilutes the product. Not terribly fair to the season ticket holders, who get raped for full price for 2 exhibition games per year (adding ~50% to the price).
Thoughts? |
Re: NFL teams blitzing in preseason?
season ticket holders having to pay for 2 meaningless games is a raw deal.
I don't think it has anything to do w/ schemes, though, the teams need to practice. |

In all honesty, I don't think #1 squads not playing hurts the product at all. In fact, having guys like Portis getting hurt last year dilutes the product.

Plenty of people want to pay it. It's not like a season ticket holder later gets told "oh, by the way, you owe us an additional $200 for the preseason games". Re: NFL teams blitzing in preseason?
Please NFL get rid of 2 preseason games and have an 18 game regular season. Also while your at it, 7 teams per conference make the playoffs. Imagine the wild card round, 1 team gets a bye, then there would be a tripleheader on Saturday and Sunday of NFL playoff action. 9 hours of football 2 straight days, I'm hard just thinking about it.

I get your (and Josh's) point, and understand it's a package deal that's a buyer's decision (and most have decided the package is worth it), I just think it kind of sucks. |
Re: NFL teams blitzing in preseason?
All,
I don't get this complaint at all. You pay a premium to buy the same guaranteed seats for all games plus the right to buy playoff tix as well plus the right to renew this every year. Would you be happier if there was a season ticket premium fee and the exhibition games were thrown in for free? This complaint is really just "I think season tickets cost too much." OK, fine, don't buy them if you think that! |
Re: NFL teams blitzing in preseason?
I think the issue isn't that season ticket holders are "forced" to buy preseason tickets, but that there is no reason for there to be 4 preseason games at all. The solution is not to make preseason games "optional" in season ticket packages, but to drop 2 preseason games from the schedule entirely. Those "extra" games should be what everyone should be riled up about, and that the consumer has to pay for them, not the fact that they're included in the season ticket package.

Wouldn't it make sense from a PR standpoint if nothing else to have the preseason tix be less, even if it meant compensating with higher reg. season prices (for the same total). The status quo creates a huge amount of ill will with the best customers. The reality is that I have 8 tickets that are worth $67.50 and 2 that are worthless. Suppose 2 of my buddies bail at the last minute and I'm trying to unload my tickets (to a regular season game) outside the stadium. Suppose I'm in a state where its illegal to scalp tickets for more than face value. I'm legally forced to eat the $13.50 per ticket now? |

Tickets are "worth" the value you derive from them either through use or sale. At $540 for a seat/season you decided you will get better value out of the seat(s) than you would get out of spending that money in another way. You might have even paid more than that. If the tickets were $600 would have you still bought them? If so, you are getting value and you win the economic value game, stop complaining. 2. If the tickets truly are "worthless" again this is only a value judgement by you not by anyone else, there are 2 things you can do. A) Offer up on Ebay/StubHub/street corner/work email to recoup as much cash as you can for "worthless" tickets in which case you 'win', because again you are getting value for something you deem worth zero. B) Donate the tickets to charity and take the writeoff. Underprivileged kids get to go to a game and again you get value for something that again you consider worth nothing. Oh yeah, there is always option C too.... do nothing and keep complaining. |
Re: NFL teams blitzing in preseason?
Meh quit complaining, at least you have season tickets. I'm a Redskins fan and won't even be able to buy season tickets IN MY LIFETIME(unless I buy a box, they have plenty of those). Last year I went to 2 games and got the cheapest available tickets off of Stubhub. They were $120 for $44.50ish seats.

Re: NFL teams blitzing in preseason?
Anyone who thinks it's wrong to complain about being forced to buy tickets to the two preseason games obviously doesn't actually hold season tickets. It's a crock of [censored] and every season holder I know resents it.

Bitching about business practices that gouge loyal customers. Its all fine and dandy to screw us over on preseason tickets now, but when the team starts losing in 5-10 years the years of getting stuck with preseason tickets will be a major strike against renewing for a lot of people. |
Re: NFL teams blitzing in preseason?
God you "well don't buy the seasons if you don't like it" guys are freakin TOOLS.
Yah, everyone gets it, you don't have to buy season tickets. Can you not understand that people WANT season tickets but do NOT WANT to be forced to buy the preseason tickets? Your collective "hey tough [censored] don't buy them then" mentality is ridiculous. Have you never bought a product and thought "Hey, I love feature A, like feature B and feature C, but I don't really care for feature D" - ZOMG EITHER HAPPILY ACCEPT EVERY SINGLE ASPECT OF THE PRODUCT AND LOVE EVERY SECOND OF IT AND NEVER EVER COMPLAIN OR ELSE JUST SHUT UP AND DON'T BUY IT. Such a ridiculous argument. The NFL is so cash flush and tickets are already so expensive they really don't need to be doing this. You're paying full price for these tickets, and you're not seeing a full NFL game from the starters that we all care about and support. Lots of these guys won't even make the team (plus the game doesnt count obv). For teams like the Giants where people wait 30 years for seasons, opening up the preaseason and letting the more casual fan get a taste of the stadium would be great! I mean, most preseason games nearly or do sell out, and yet the gameday attendance is usually under 50% capacity. No one gets excited for these games. No one wants the tickets, and they're forced down season ticket holders throats. Yes, I'll still buy seasons because I love the team and going to the real games, but I think it's reasonable to wish I didn't have to shell out an extra 100+ for something I didn't want it. If the Bills get homefield advantage throughout the playoffs this year, though - hey, at least I'll have dibs baby! |
Re: NFL teams blitzing in preseason?
The Giants have a 30 year waiting list - what's the point of selling exhibition games at face value to fans who're never going to get tickets to the place?
The point that Jack of Arcades made that everyone is ignoring that if these pre-season games didn't exist, they'd jack up the price for the regular season. Right? Obviously you're paying for 2 games you don't want in the pre-season. So you'll pay that amount for the regular season too. |
Re: NFL teams blitzing in preseason?
The NFL position is that football is football, preseason and regular season are the same price. I'd quit bitching if they extended that logic to playoff ticket prices.
|
Re: NFL teams blitzing in preseason?
Yes, but everyone is missing the flipside of that. Season ticket holders would want the prices jacked up for regular season.
Say season ticket holder Joe breaks both his legs and cannot go to one football game that year and has to get rid of all his tickets but still buy to keep his plan for the next year. Scenario 1 (as is): Joe sells tickets to 8 games for $54 each, but cant move the preseason tickets and eats $54/game. Scenario 2 (reg season jacked up and no forced preseason purchases): Joe sells tickets to 8 games for $67.50 (face value of the new tickets) each and doesnt lose anything from the money he laid out. How is that not beneficial to a season ticket holder? |
