Name sports figures who have been convicted and if they came back

I didn't want to derail the Vick thread so here's a new one.

Name a sports figure, what they were accused of, if they were convicted and if they came back to their sport.

Rae Carruth was accused and convicted of conspiring to murder his girlfriend. He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

So I'm pretty sure he won't be coming back.

Re: Name sports figures who have been convicted and if they came back

Craig MacTavish served a year in prison for a drunk driving sentence in Boston - I believe it was vehicular manslaughter.

He came back and played several more seasons in the NHL with no apparent loss of effectiveness and is now an NHL head coach.

Mike Danton was accused of plotting to kill his agent and is now serving time - his NHL career is obviously over.

Re: Name sports figures who have been convicted and if they came back

Nick, MacTavish was the guy I was thinking about it in another thread.

he killed a guy (while drunk driving).

granted, media coverage of the NHL back then wasn't close to the NFL though.

one could also make the case that would Jamal Lewis did was worse

Re: Name sports figures who have been convicted and if they came back

Leonard Little was sentenced to 90 days + probation and stuff for involuntary manslaughter (drunk driving accident) and I don't know if he ever missed any time.

Jamal Lewis spent 4 months in prison for attempting to distribute cocaine. He served a 2-game suspension for violating the drug policy which is kind of weird because he was busted for something he did in college (ie I don't think it was actually a violation of the drug policy).

"Attempting to distribute cocaine" is worse then killing someone in a drunk driving accident? I'd like to hear that argument

Re: Name sports figures who have been convicted and if they came back

This is a good one I think.

Daniel Heatley - He was charged with vehicular manslaughter. He plead guilty to second-degree vehicular homicide, driving too fast for conditions, failure to maintain a lane, and speeding.

He received 3 years probation and since returned to the NHL.

Re: Name sports figures who have been convicted and if they came back

Heatley was also seriously injured himself as a result of the crash and spent most of 03-04 rehabbing.

The death in that case was of his teammate Dan Snyder. Sad story.

I agree, I thought it was pretty awesome for his family to publicly stand by Heatley. Saying they knew it wasn't on purpose etc.

Jared Allen has had 3 DUI's and spent 48 hours in jail as a result of the most recent one. He will serve a 4-game suspension to start this season.

Not to be callous, but that story isn't nearly as sad as the woman being killed by Little. A couple of buddies getting drunk and driving and one of them dying is nowhere near as tragic as taking out an innocent bystander.

Oh, I 100% agree - and that's why I think Heatley didn't deserve any punishment from the NHL as a result, whereas Little should have been punished. Snyder wanted to see what his friend's Ferrari could do.

No but there is no reason for anyone to pick him up yet, he still has the suspension coming and if someone waits until after week 1 to sign him then they wont have to guarantee his salary for the year.

Tony Adams drink driving spent two months in prison came back to captain his team and country.

Lee Hughes causing death by dangerous driving just got out after three years signed by league two Oldham was at Prem WBA before and was being touted for an England cap. Yet to make an appearance for Oldham.

Duncan Ferguson three months for headbutting an opposing player during a match straight back into the team like nothing happened.

Ray Lewis plead to obstruction of justice in his mess.

Ironically, the two friends he flipped on were later found not guilty, so he was the only one who walked away from it with a conviction.

Re: Name sports figures who have been convicted and if they came back

Mike Tyson LDO.

Todd Bertuzzi was convicted of assault charges for an on-ice hit on Steve Moore which broke his neck. He received 1 year probation and an indefinite suspension from the NHL. But because of the lockout season, he only served 20 games. Marty McSorley was also convicted of assault in an on-ice incident, but never made a successful return to the NHL (but probably because he was nearly 40 and couldn't play anymore).

If were getting into just DUI convictions, Odell Thurman will be serving a 4 game suspension to start this season after he got 6 days in rehab and 2 years probation.

Heatley wasn't drunk. If he was, that would have been prison + suspension 100% of the time, and Snyder's family would have never ever stood by him. Obv. speeding is not even near the same level of crime as drunk driving, regardless of the outcome.

If the US actually had roads where there were no speed limits, accidents like Heatley's 85 in a 40 would happen much much less. Highway speed limits encourage non-highway speeding.
