Re: [Konrad] 20/08/07 - Contract terms
I wouldn't depict Jean as wearing a bowtie too, perhaps another accessory. Maybe a french beret?

Re: [Konrad] 20/08/07 - Contract terms

ARGH [ QUOTE ] What's with the mustache though? [/ QUOTE ] Mustachioed is the funniest word ever and you will see it in every strip involving Jean |
Re: [Konrad] 20/08/07 - Contract terms
It's funnier spelled "moustachioed".

[/ QUOTE ] Google's easy: http://forum.tdctrade.com/forum/Forum5/HTML/000239.html JfC I hated Accounting... Switched from minoring in that to History half-way through college, and I was a Business Major lol. I sucked at Finance too. Way too much actual studying required. |
Re: [Konrad] 20/08/07 - Contract terms
"FOB" and "CIF" are literally ways you ship something, as in a delivery. Imagine the joke was "first class" or "priority mail."

Re: [Konrad] 20/08/07 - Contract terms
A joke no one gets...

Re: [Konrad] 20/08/07 - Contract terms
Sorry Garcia, I love you but even after reading the definitions I still don't get this.
|
Re: [Konrad] 20/08/07 - Contract terms
I really thought you meant 'fresh off boat'...
|
Re: [Konrad] 20/08/07 - Contract terms
[ QUOTE ]
Sorry Garcia, I love you but even after reading the definitions I still don't get this. [/ QUOTE ] Ok I am guessing that anyone reading down to here has seen the comic, so here's the explanation! The explanation will make the joke not funny though. FOB stands for 'Free on Board'. It is one of the most common terms used in shipping/freight when the purchaser (e.g. Wal-Mart) wants to buy stuff from the supplier (e.g. a factory in China). It specifies that the supplier only has to transport the goods to the port of loading. CIF/CFR are also common terms, which specify that title to goods pass to the purchaser upon arriving at port of loading and loaded on to the ship. However, this time, the supplier has to pay the freight charges, so he is responsible for getting the goods to the port of discharge. The purchaser only has to arrange transport from his port to his warehouse. The joke is that when someone says FOB/CIF, he is discussing with the supplier how he wants the goods shipped to him. That's funny, because 'ship it' means getting goods shipped to him, too! Ha ha! |
Re: [Konrad] 20/08/07 - Contract terms
garcia,
Now that you explained the reference to "shipping it" I smiled a little, but obv missed the big joke by not understanding it right off the bat. |
Re: [Konrad] 20/08/07 - Contract terms
Needed it to be explained, but you would have gotten much praise for this strip if the abbreviations were more common knowledge. Great concept.
|
Re: [Konrad] 20/08/07 - Contract terms
So I need to know a bunch of shipping lingo to get this joke. WTF I still dont understand why that is so funny.
|
Re: [Konrad] 20/08/07 - Contract terms
I thought FOB/CIF were common terms that everybody knew [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]
Well, I guessed at least OOT would know since OOT is smarter than 90% of the population |

Only a small portion of OOT is going to know enough about transport to understand this joke. Most of us either are degen poker players or have jobs that have nothing to do with shipping. |

Re: [Konrad] 20/08/07 - Contract terms
This might be the best one. I love that Jean warily moves away from Konrad.
Most people recognize FOB and CIF, just not degenerate poker players cum degenerate message board posters with pigmentation problems. |

Re: [Konrad] 20/08/07 - Contract terms
I thought FOB was Fall Out Boy at first because of all that fall out girl [censored] in BBV4life.
|
Re: [Konrad] 20/08/07 - Contract terms
I didn't understand the terms. Now that I do understand the terms the joke is still not funny, even if I had known what the terms meant earlier.
However, I do feel happy that I learned something interesting about the details of the shipping industry. |

Re: [Konrad] 20/08/07 - Contract terms
Very funny.
I learned about FOB for the first time when studying for the California Bar, so I can see why many people didn't understand it. I thought it was brilliant though. |
Re: [Konrad] 20/08/07 - Contract terms
I knew what FOB means (although, I did think for a moment you were going with the Fresh Off the Boat version) but never heard of CIF (or at least forgot I learned it). A little too obscure, but funny in concept.

FOB stands for 'Free on Board'. [/ QUOTE ] Sonuvagoat. I quote all day long using FOB, but have always thought it to mean "freight on board". I like my way better. I wouldn't want to have the word "free" anywhere on a quote. |

A little googling also pops up Freight On Buyer which makes it even more clear than the other two. |
