Beat: MURDER IN THE TOILET (possibly NSFW, definately gross)
 

So it's just after dinner, and I go off to the loo to take a sit on the throne. I've been having stomach cramps here and there over the last few weeks, but I had felt fine since morning. I'd gone out and gotten supplies for school just fine in the afternoon.

So after I drop my deuce, I take a wipe and it's all blood. Has this ever happened to you? If not, I don't think you can realize the intensity of this situation. I take a look downstairs and it looks like the toilet is full of blood. I know it mixes with the water and that a few cc's can look like gallons, but it's still a provocative sight. Especially when there's drops of it going down the sides above the water line.

Oh [censored].

The OP is going to be the not-so-happy recipient of prenisone for the next two or three months--just in time to go back to university! Discuss.

I've been in contact with my doctor and I will be seeing him soon, in less than a week.

There is a blood test that helps with this sort of diagnosis. Have you talked to your doctor about it?

I have Chron's. Same thing happened to me right before I was diagnosed. Went onto the steroids and adasulphadine (sp?). Definitely a [censored] (no pun intended) disease with lots of stomach pain. Get to a doctor asap

err well its not really consistent. I think first when I was tested it showed was positive for UC, then it changed to the crohn's and other times was entirely negative.

i've been having a flare up recently but i've yet to have anything too terrible that puts me out

Fiber is not allowed for people with UC. Don't know about Crohn's but I assume it's the same.

I have Crohn's, although I have never really [censored] blood before. Just lay off the fiber and take your drugs and you'll be fine. The side-effects of Prednisone are worse than the actual disease.

Remember: the KEY to feeling okay is to NOT eat fiber. Do not even eat ONE fruit or vegetable that is not a banana. I once at ONE apple, and it put me down for hours. I have only been diagnosed with the disease for a few months, and I have found that it isn't so horrific once you figure out what you can and cannot eat.

Also, I can eat fiber fine, guess its not this thats [censored] up about my stomach. I have been to the doctor a couple times when having severe stomach pains and they figured out nothing. Luckily it hasn't been bad in a couple years without clear reasons.

QFT. When I'm between relapses I'm fine.

Diet-wise, I've cut out all raw fruits and vegetables except bananas. The only cooked vegetables I eat are green beans and potatoes. I avoid all fried food...mostly. I'm not above eating some potato chips if I'm feeling well; they haven't affected me the way fried chicken or pork chops do. I don't eat as much dairy as I used to, especially milk and ice cream, so I take calcium pills to make up the difference.

Basically, except for the fried food and ice cream it's nothing that I miss horribly, and now I have a great excuse to not eat my vegetables [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

I used to work in a digestive cancers lab. Generally, if the blood is bright red there's nothing to worry about -- the blood is oxygenated and has therefore come from near the anus from like a fissure or hemorrhoid or something.

If the blood is dark, however, it has come from somewhere higher up in the intestine and could be a symptom of GI cancer or precursor legions -- oh noes!

UPDATE:

Got my prednisone. My doctor wants me to take 30 mg a day (10 x 3 times a day). Hopefully this will improve me enough to concentrate on school, which starts on the 27th. I'm not doubled over in pain and I don't necessarily think I'm getting worse, but the on-again off-again cramps and pain made the weekend (esp. Saturday) fairly unpleasant.

UPDATE #2:

Prednisone has done nothing for me so far. I'm now up to 40 mg/day (the maximum for me) and I'm still getting cramps, blood in the water, etc. It's actually not coming very often (only once every other day) but it's enough to alarm my doctor. He's made it clear that this is the end of the line for me; any sort of downturn here means IV steroids/hospital/end of semester.

My God, this sucks.

Same for me. I have UC and have never noticed what I eat affecting it. I'm lucky to have a pretty mild case, though.
