Hoegaarden
I firmly believe that Hoegaarden is far and away the best beer ever created. I'm not sure how popular or well known it is. One of my friends "introduced" me to it about a year ago. I had never heard of it until then. Most liquor stores don't seem to have it. The gap between Hoegaarden and my second favorite beer (not sure what that is) is enormous. I can't drink one without drinking about 4. Any other Hoegaarden lovers out there?

Solid. |
Re: Hoegaarden
Also a big fan, especially in the summer.
You need to find a better place to buy your beer. Hoegaarden is widely available. There are some Belgian white beers made by microbreweries in the U.S. that you might also want to try. Whirlwind by Victory in PA is very good, for example. |

Re: Hoegaarden
I don't like white beer. I like all other alcohol though. That is all.

Re: Hoegaarden
It's the standard "summer-beer" where I live, it is advertised pretty big. My personal favourite beer is Hoegaerdse Das:

Re: Hoegaarden
Blue Moon is my favorite "Belgian" beer, but Hoegaarden is also pretty good. Also, Hoegaarden is very popular in the states and is relatively easy to find.
|
Re: Hoegaarden
I've been chatting up Hoegaarten in the 2+2 forum games for months. Blue Moon is the Budweiser of white ales (it's still pretty good for the money, though). I also highly recommend the Sam Adams white ale - very comperable to Hoegaarten, in both taste and price. At my local beer cooler, either one or the other (but never both) are on sale from week to week.

Re: Hoegaarden
it tastes like fruity water to me, meh.
|
Re: Hoegaarden
The time I tried Blue Moon I spit it out and asked the bartender, "Who peed in my Hoegaarden?"
|
Re: Hoegaarden
Far and away my favorite beer. Especially good in summer, but really delicious anytime. I used to use an orange in it, but now feel like it stands up better on it's own. Reasonably hard to find in MD, and pricy (about 13.00/6). But worth every penny.

Re: Hoegaarden
Great beer, although there are nicer less mainstream white beers out there.

Great beer, although there are nicer less mainstream white beers out there. [/ QUOTE ] my problem with that is you can really only find them at a nice supermarket or something and then they have most likely been on the shelf for god knows how long. I've tried to pick up some beers I've had in Europe in the states and often they're a little skunky. I'm a huge Hoegaarden fan. I remember my 1st one like it was yesterday (obv didn't have that many that night haha). Allegedely, across the atlantic, some people call them "hooligans" because once you start drinking them you're bound to get in trouble. I don't like them with an orange (or blue moon, which IMO is much worse but still a good beer) but do enjoy a bit of lemon. No fruit is fine as well as the guys at the bar i always go to give me [censored] for drinking beer with fruit in it. Heffeweisen (spelling?) is the other one i see out a lot. Though I think last time I had one out at the city they didn't give me one but tried to tell me they did. That happened at another place where i ordered a blue moon and they gave me a Sam Adams. Pssshhh. |

It tastes great to me. Also, I assume you are talking about Sam Adams Summer Ale. Also a really great beer, and I'll miss it once it's gone for the year. |

Hoegaarden and Blue Moon are two of my favorites.

Re: Hoegaarden
They have this on tap over here. I think it tastes absolutely awful.

Re: Hoegaarden
If you live in the northeast, you should be able to find much better Belgian whites than Hoegaarden. Here are four suggestions in order of my favorite to not quite as good, but still better than Hoegaarden:
Southampton Double White Ale (New York) Allagash White (Maine) Unibroue Blance de Chambly (Quebec) Ommegang Witte (New York) |

OmmegangWTF

what Wookie said. Hoogaarden is fine, but there are better ones out there if you really like this style.

Do you recommend with or without lemon? Also - odd question - but what temperature do you serve it at? I've had it at bars where it is kinda cool but not really (below a chilly room temperature), and then elsewhere where it is ice cold. |
Re: Hoegaarden
I think the Paulaner hefeweisen is pretty superior to Hoegaarden, but both are obviously delicious.

It is considered a beer faux pas to have a slice of lemon in it.

I live in TX, however, so no dice. I first tried Hoegaarden in Belgium 5 years ago and loved it. It seems to have been gaining popularity here in the states since then, because it appears to be widely available now. I don't have a clear recollection of my impression of it in Belgium, but I do being disappointed the first time I had it after returning to the states. Still a good beer though. |

The time I tried Blue Moon I spit it out and asked the bartender, "Who peed in my Hoegaarden?" [/ QUOTE ] CUZ BLUE MOON TASTES LIKE PISS AMIRITE?!?!?! Beer snob. I like both, the difference being is that I find Blue Moon to be a lot heavier. Maybe I'm just imagining this. And Blue Moon is quite a bit cheaper at the store (apparently because it's a domestic in disguise), but not so much at the bar. |

[/ QUOTE ] Even though Bavarian hefe is one of my favorites, I'm not a huge fan of Belgian Wits, go figure. As far as that goes, though, Flying Dog just recently started shipping a wit that I think is a pretty good rep of the style. They should have a wider distribution westward than someone like Ommegang, so look for it if you're in TX. [ QUOTE ] Also - odd question - but what temperature do you serve it at? [/ QUOTE ] This is pretty subjective, but according to Garret Oliver, the colder the beer, the more of the bitterness you'll bring out of the beer. Obviously if its near freezing it'll dull just about every taste. But since you're looking to pick up the spice, fruit, and malt of these beers more than the hop flavors, I'd serve it a bit warmer than I would an APA or the like. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] It is considered a beer faux pas to have a slice of lemon in it. [/ QUOTE ] Source? I prefer it without but some places just stick it in without asking. It's not bad at all with. [/ QUOTE ] I also prefer these styles without lemon/orange, and also have found that the default at a bar is to get a wedge in your beer. Some people like the extra acidity to help cut through the smoothness and help lift flavors off the palate a bit more. No biggie either way. |
Re: Hoegaarden
Props to everyone for recognizing Allagash White as well. Even harder to find, but even better tasting. In MD/DC/VA they only have Allagash at select bars/restaurants and only the most gourmet stores (World Market).
Delicious stuff though. QFT whoever mentioned it first. |
Re: Hoegaarden
i totally agree with everything the OP said except the part about Hoegaarden. he must be mistaken and accidentally typed that instead of Dog Fish Head.
