Laundry tips (washing hats?)

I've got a couple of nicer hats (baseball style caps) that I want to wash. How should I do this? I have this plastic hat frame thing that my mom got when I was little, supposedly I can put the hat in that and put it in the washing machine. But is this the best way to do it without damaging the brim? If so, what laundry settings should I use? If not, what is?

Also, feel free to post any general laundry tips here as well.

This hat style is so hideous. It makes the wearer look like JJ Jameson.

Athletic shoe cleaner works well for cleaning hats. You can get the stuff at any sporting goods/shoe store for like $10. It comes with a little brush and sponge.

Some people say putting them in the dishwasher works but I've never tried that. Clothes washer isn't a good idea. Every time I've done that it messes up the hat.

Has always worked for me - better than the laundry, which can ruin the shape/rim with the spin.

So how do you put them in the dishwasher? With the plastic frame thing or just loose? Normal dishwasher cycle?

I typically put the hat in loose on the top shelf of the dishwasher - the little plastic dividers give it enough support. I've usually just gone with the normal cycle and regular dish soap.

Incidentally, if you don't want to go out and buy one of those hat dryers, you can invert an appropriately-sized saucepan and put the hat on that to dry. It should maintain the shape pretty well.

Just soak them in warm water in the sink for an hour with a litte clothes detergent and then knead the dirt/sweat spots with your fingers or an old toothbrush. Then air dry. Should come out like new.

I got one of these as a stupid gift a few years ago, but it seems to work pretty well. Pop the hat in & toss it in with a load of laundry.

[/ QUOTE ]I had the guy do that last time I bought a hat, but I haven't worn it enough for it to matter. However I wish I had done it with a few other hats I have. I don't know about ya'll, but my hats get the sweat stains especially after a few games of softball.

What, do you guys wear your clean hats when going to the fancy Sizzler on the other side of town? Jesus Christ, it's a baseball hat. I like mine MORE when they're dirty.

[/ QUOTE ]I like mine sorta not clean. Too dirty and they look horrible. Might as well wear a piece of garbage on your head.
