Types of bread you eat
I need to stop eating white flour-derived bread. Unfortunately, fresh french bread and white bread tastes so damn good, and the multigrain [censored] that my girlfriend eats tastes like hay.
What types of bread do you guys eat that doesn't taste dry as [censored] and would be good for making lunch meat sandwiches? |
Re: Types of bread you eat
wonderbread makes a whole wheat version
|
Re: Types of bread you eat
Whole foods here carries a really good whole wheat sourdough bread. The sourdough flavor is pretty unpronounced, but the texture of the bread is great for 100% whole wheat. I can never remember what bakery it comes from though.

Re: Types of bread you eat
Grocery story at school sells these super long whole wheat loaves for $3. Pretty solid. The key for bread imo is that it is dense, not that airy [censored].

white bread tastes so damn good [/ QUOTE ] white bread's only function on this earth should be buttered toast. Otherwise it's about the worst option available. My favorite name brand bread is Orowheat's 7 Grain bread. That stuff is good. Not dry either. Whole wheat sourdough sounds pretty solid. I bought a loaf of truckee brand sourdough and while it's good, it's pretty dry and probably not that good for you. |

Try finding whole wheat flour as the main ingredient if going with wheat bread. All wheat breads are not the same. I'm thinking you can find a whole wheat/grain/some other combo of bread where you'll enjoy the taste. |
Re: Types of bread you eat
Any with 100% whole wheat flour as first ingredient (not enriched or bleached flour) and one without HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup)

Re: Types of bread you eat
What's really da bomb is getting a bread machine and making your own bread. You can get very good ones for under a hundred bucks, and it's really, really easy. Nothing on earth like the smell of fresh bread baking too.

I eat Dempster's Flaxseed bread and it tastes pretty damn good to me. Once in a while, I will eat a white cheesebun from the local bakery as a treat because they are amazing.

Re: Types of bread you eat
Toast it. whole wheat/multigrain tastes like 50x better if you toast it. Smells good too.

Having REALLY great bread, especially hot, makes it incredibly easy to get fat if you don't get a grip. But that said, having food you make be too delicious is probably one of the worst arguments for not making it. Better way to handle the deliciousness situation is just to stop being a big pussy weakling about it. |
Re: Types of bread you eat
Toasted wheat bread.
Shocked to read the average American only needs 2500 calories a day to maintain his weight. Exercise. I eat 3500 calories a day to maintain my weight. Am 10 pounds lighter than when I graduated high school in 1962. |

the average american is slightly overweight, but sedentary, im surprised its this high... |
Re: Types of bread you eat
Healthnut Bread, it's a dark color and has some nuts in it. Tastes great with turkey.
I usually end of up throwing in the freezer and nuking it for 10 seconds because I usually won't finish the loaf in time. Still tastes great and never dry. |

[/ QUOTE ] I thought it was like 2k for women and 2.5k for men. I don't eat much more than this each day to gain weight. Like 2750, which may be a shade on the low side. This might also be why people are fat since despite being mostly sedentary I have a pretty decent metabolism and do ~3-4 hours of heavy exercise each week. Meh. I'm more of a fan of the "choose a diet, adjust calories by 250 each week depending on goals until you get there." Though that'll likely change somewhat soon. Kyle, Earth Grain Wheat Berry. I eat it with all sorts of stuff. All, I'm still baffled why a modicum of HFCS would be worse for you than sugar in bread? The GI/IR would be mostly blunted if you just ate anything other than bread, and even then the difference between the two is almost negligible in the bread itself. |

I think I prolly eat around 5-6k a day. I never stop eating.

Re: Types of bread you eat
I don't know if it's healthier, but I make my own bread most of the time.
Recipe: 2.5 cups organic unbleached white flour 2 teaspoons yeast 1 tablespoon kosher salt (kosher is important because it gives the bread a better texture) 1.5 cups lukewarm water. Mix the dry ingredients together then stir in the water. The dough will be really sticky. Flour up your hands and a surface and work in just enough extra flour to make it not stick to everything. Don't overknead! If you knead it too much it will be flat. And don't make the water too hot or it will kill the yeast. Put it in a metal bowl covered in saran wrap for like an hour or two. Then you can either make it into a focaccia by flattening it into a pizza shape, coating with olive oil and sprinkling with kosher salt.... or cut it in half and make 2 baguettes (you need a special pan for this). If you want to the baguette to crisp up nicely, brush the top with egg white. |

I eat anything except white bread, they're totally tasteless and nowhere near as nutritious as brown bread.
My favourite bread has to be Subway's honey oat, don't think you can buy this on its own though [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] |

[/ QUOTE ] Hrm. 3g of HFCS or 5g of brown sugar. Decisions. Actually I was stunned to see that 10% of bread is sugar. Weird. Regardless considering that I eat the bread with other foods 100% of the time. I'll start stressing over the sugar in my coffee long before the HFCS in my bread. |
Re: Types of bread you eat
There's a certain minimum of sugar you need in yeast breads to get them to rise, and then there's the sugar you put into regular bread just for taste, and then you get the very popular "health" breads that have honey in them -- more sugars. You can be getting a pretty good dose of it in quick-absorbing form.

Pint of ice cream is 1100 to 1300 calories. A bag of potato chips is about 1000 calories. A 9 ounce can of cashews is about 1500 calories. I often eat those in one sitting. It's not like eating veggies all day. |

The only thing mildly acceptable is the cashews if you are on some perverse South Beach diet while alpine skiing and needing 7k calories a day. |

Anyone in love with Asian/French bakery items? I've been eating them for breakfast and they are just so yummy. It's convenient too because I can just grab them and off to work I go.

Re: Types of bread you eat
Kyle,
Generally just look for any whole wheat or whole grain stuff, as you'll get better quality complex carbs at a lower calorie level. As you know carbs are very important, but most people are surprised to find out exactly how many calories their standard carbohydrates are delivering. If you make yourself a sandwich with regular whole wheat bread, you're going to get around 250 cals from the bread alone, and if you're eating 6 meals a day, that's gonna catch up with you fast. I personally shop specifically for items that are physically smaller, not just generally healthier. Two lifesavers for me are any of the several brands of multi-grain or whole wheat MINI bagels (usually about 120 cals for 1 bagel, which when combined with egg beaters and salsa is a great day starter at about 220 cals), and the specific brand "La Tortilla Factory" tortillas, which taste just fine, are multi grain, and only have 80 cals (as opposed to the 160 or so that is in a regular tortilla). I don't know your specific diet, but it would probably be wise for you to cut out "lunch meat sandwiches", and replace it with a wrap using La Tortilla Factory wraps. All that said, I like the taste of whole wheat and multi-grain over pretty much anything that you can find in a supermarket. Stay away from white! |
